Isn't that the idea behind back-up stories? That they aren't related to the main story? Tbh, I adore An Innocent Man. I think it holds up in a lot of ways better than the Killing Joke does, and would make for one hell of a stage monologue. It's ominous, it's unsettling, but it's delivered in a way that's almost relatable. He makes a case that, on a certain level, makes sense and presents it with such nonchalant confidence that part of me wants to agree with him despite how clearly deranged and sick it all is. I've never read anything like it, honestly.
