Origin
All I knew, in the beginning, were darkness and silence.
Whether I was ever the daughter of a man, or of a god, or simply the creation of those older even than the gods, I shall never know. All I knew, after the silence, was her voice. Their voices, three speaking to me as one. They told me that they would have me swear fealty to them. I could make no answer; all I knew was the darkness, and the voices.
When I woke, I was under the Tree, beside the Spring, within their cave. There were three women there, indescribable, for they each wore a cloak. One was knee-deep in the Spring; one in the branches of the Tree; and one stood beside me. This one, in a cloak of grey like the stones of the cave, spoke first.
"You will have my eyes," she said, and touched my forehead with one soft but withered hand. I saw in that moment many things, a spectrum of worlds rising and falling, peoples being born and being destroyed. I saw the beginnings of gods, and some of their deaths. "And," Urd continued, for that was her name, "I give you this cave for a home. It shall be your retreat, as all things are."
I was before the next woman, her of the brown cloak, before I realized I had moved. We stood under the tree, and she reached out to my chest. Her touch was warm; when I felt it, I saw not her, but the tree, growing from a single seed to its current strength. Slowly the Armor formed over my skin, holding me. "As the bark clothes the tree, I give you armor that will never fail you. As the tree is rooted, so shall you be." Verandi, for that was her name, then reached down, lifting a fruit from the ground where it had fallen. "I give you the Tree as your only resource. Defend it as you would your home."
And so I ate of the Tree of Time, and was then drawn to the last woman, she of the cloak of blue, at the edge of the spring. She held out to me the blade. "I give you the power to tear down and rebuild," she said, and looking at her I saw nothing. My hand touched the blade's hilt, and in that instant I saw its forging, deep among the stars, not by any mortal or god's hand; but by a creature, if it was created, above all gods and mortals. It was the father of the Three; the Father of the Universe. And then, before me once more, was Skuld, speaking with her sisters as one entity - the Norns.
"The water of the Spring shall be your life. You shall drink of it, and shall live. You are our blade, shield, and sight. We cannot leave here, so we send you to do our work. You are our mouthpiece and weapon. You shall take upon yourself our name, and shall bring it the honors of battle, not only in taking life, but in sparing it, and in giving it. You shall be the Norn."
