The Perfect Spider-Man Game

So after playing The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and being somewhat disappointed I started brainstorming ideas on what I would love to see as a perfect Spider-Man game. With a new generation of gaming starting I think it would be great to see a high caliber game that people will love. This will probably be pretty long so I apologize.

Story

This is something I feel every Spider-Man game has been lacking in, besides Spider-Man: Edge of Time and Ultimate Spider-Man. The main problem is it’s either a movie based or an apocalypse is happening. Main thing here is to make it, obviously, comic book related. The thing that really captured me with the two games mentioned above is that they were extremely personal to Peter. That’s something that always pulls me in. I would really like Norman as the Goblin to be the main antagonist as it would be nice to see Spidey’s #1 enemy finally get to shine for once in a video game. Another thing that is important is to have some really interesting things going on with Peter. A problem with Spidey games is they focus to much on the mask and we really don’t get to see what’s behind it often. The writers need to be top notch for this, get the best Spidey writers on this, my pick would be Brian Michael Bendis or Peter David. These two know how to balance almost everything when it comes to Spider-Man. So story, very important.

City

This is a big part in making something to marvel at. The city needs to feel like NY. So far I think the best was in Spider-Man 3. A big thing is surrounding areas outside of Manhattan. I want to be able to cross bridges and visit places like Queens and Brooklyn. It would be so nice to be able to go to Aunt May’s house and walk around, talk to her a bit. Or the Daily Bugle, going inside and talking to Betty and Robbie. You could get missions from Jameson that way akin to Spider-Man 3. The Statue of Liberty needs to be in there too whether you take a ride on a helicopter to it or swim it needs to be part, it’s iconic. Proportions need to be better too, in lot of games Spidey is either too small or too big compared to the city. Another thing is Easter Eggs. There has to be a lot of them within the city, whether it’s the Avenger’s Mansion, Oscorp, Stark Tower/Industries, the BaxterBuilding, or Sanctum Sanctorum. There needs to be these.

Web-swinging

This is probably the most important part of making a fun free-roaming Spider-Man game. I’m just going name off features I want and explain how they should be used.

Physics-

Overall there should be a proper physics based swinging mechanic. Web-lines should have their own physical properties (elastic, bend, collisions etc.) and the speed boost will come automatically, if you swing properly. You should be able to gain speed while swinging around a lamp post. When you try to shoot a web in the air and nothings around either Spidey tries to shoot and it falls down like silly-string, or he looks around, down at his forearms and doesn’t even try. The jump button should be used to charge a jump, and then let go to catapult yourself out of the swing (like SM2/3).

Web-zip-

Self explanatory, would like to see it come back. Maybe add more the one animation.

Two-Handed Swing-

It was a cool feature that each trigger was a hand in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but it could have been executed better. I want to be able to shoot a web with one hand, reach the top of my swing, shoot with the other and swing from there. Or something akin to Spider-man 2/3 where you can swing from 2 webs at once.

Jump-

One thing that I would love to come back is the double jump, but I think it would be interesting to mix it with the jump feature from ASM1. Like the longer you hold the jump button the higher you go, if you want to go farther forward when jumping that’s what the double jump can do. Also the use of Spidey pulling himself up with his webs would be a good substitute when in mid-air to either save yourself or want to go higher.

Fall Damage-

Hated how in ASM/ASM2 Spidey automatically saves himself, doesn’t give you that sense of danger, just bring it back. I think adding something that was only found in Web of Shadows would be cool. Basically it was if you were swinging too fast and you hit a wall you’d smash into it then fall backwards. It was hard to do, and only happened if you were moving incredibly fast. I would love for this to come back and also add that when you are moving really fast, if you were to smash into a window you’d go through it into the building. With the Next-Gen tech this would be a great addition. You could make it only a select spots though so you don’t have to have an entire building loaded for a seamless transition.

Selective Points-

This is similar to web rush, with this you can slow down time and there are selective points that you can choose from (up to 2, one for each hand) and Spider-Man will shoot a web there and that will be your anchor point for the swing. This could also be used for pulling yourself towards something to attach to while swinging as an extension from the web-zip. It could be used as a way to perch on say a gargoyle, an antenna, or flagpole/streetlight.

Climbing up-

This needs to be brought back from Ultimate Spider-Man not only was it awesome but, could be used for gaining height on your swing. After seeing how it was used in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ( 2014 Movie) I want it even more.

Wall Interaction-

I want to be able to bounce off a wall or run across it while still keeping my momentum. While the wall run has been done and executed well on several games, bouncing off a wall has not. I would like a game to try it.

Iconic Poses-

When I go swinging I want to see some poses every once in a while, not the same old stuff over and over.

Costumes

For costumes I really want to see a lot of the iconic costumes Spidey has worn over the years, with each having the features each suit in the comics had such as…

  • · Spider-Armor Mark I- Bullet proof, but it slows you down·
  • Spider-Armor Mark II- Bullet proof, keep your agility, but you don’t have access to spider-sense leaving you open for more enemy attacks·
  • Black-Suit- Have more attack damage, webbing is black, but you brutalize thugs more causing people to mistrust you, and that adds to the Menace bar·
  • Ben Reilly(Spider-Man and Scarlet Spider)- You get impact webbing·
  • Miles Morales- Venom Strike attack, can turn invisible for a short time· Big Time- Turn invisible for a short time, and immune to sonic attacks·
  • 2099- Instead of spider-sense, the dodge button activates accelerated vision(similar to how it was in Shattered Dimensions)

There could be cosmetic one as well like…

  • · Future Foundation·
  • Superior Mark II·
  • Iron Spider·
  • Wrestling·
  • Bag-Man·
  • Ends of the Earth·
  • Final Costume·
  • Movie Outfits

Peter Parker-

Cosmetic outfits that could represent Peter throughout the years. One of him in each decade. Heck, give him movie costumes. You could change these outfits at the start of the game, as soon as you unlock the ability to go to Peter’s apartment. They are stored in a bureau, while Spidey suits are in the closet.

Webbing

Same thing I did for swinging, but not going into as much detail as you guys know what Spidey uses his webbing for.

Web Wheel-

A wheel to select what type of webbing you want to shoot (bullets, line, net etc.).

Selective Points-

This could be used in combat as well. Depending on what type of webbing you’re using different points will appear whether it’s a person or the environment. You get more than 2 at a time for this.

Combat

Land-

Spider-Man’s combat needs to be unique. It should be fast, and agile. A mix of the combat for Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Man Noire from Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions would be the perfect comparison to what it should feel like. The wall bouncing from Ultimate Spider-Man should be mixed in as well. For heavy attacks, I could see something similar to Amazing Spider-Man’s heavy attacks from SD and EoT being cool. Combining them together would make for some awesome combos.

Air-

Spidey is as good in the air as he is on the ground. I think Web of Shadows handled this perfectly so if that could be replicated, perfect, including the web-strikes. All that’s needed is more animations for web-strike

Walls-

WoS was heading in the right direction, but more needs to be added to it. There weren’t many combos or attacks you could do, so expanding on that would be nice.

Dodging-

SD did this perfectly in my opinion, it was a dodge button that you hold and you could move around in it and counter. Only thing that needs to be changed is there was only a one way Spider-Man would dodge, so it would be nice to see more variety.

Boss Battles-

These need to by dynamic and suit each villain’s style. Spider-Man games tend to fall short on these, most of them being chases. The dodging system would be a cool way to show how acrobatic Spider-Man is while fighting his villains. I don’t want the battle to be punch, punch, punch, dodge, do some special thing, repeat. To use as a base is what makes the Mr. Freeze and Deathstroke fights in Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Origins, respectively, is that they were both very different than most battles, and test what you have learned, and show you different ways to use your abilities.

Side-Missions

Hero or Menace-

Sounded nice at first, but it’s a huge chore playing ASM2 though. I decided to replay missions to free roam so I don’t have to worry about my Hero Level going down sending the Task Force on me. It needs to be reworked. Add a weight parameter to the crimes. If I have to pick between a deadlock and a petty crime I should surely go for the deadlock? No news channel would ever report about 2 thugs beating each other up when there was a deadlock nearby and Spidey stopped it. Now if you turn the situation around and the player would go for the petty crime you could punish him for neglecting the deadlock/not making it there in time (if the player can manage to do both, good for him).

Variety-

This is a key aspect. The crimes should never feel the same. They should be different.

Cars are not safe-

What I’m referring to here is I want to have car chases endanger others. So while I’m chasing a car, it might hit a car send that one flying into what looks like painful death of some people. Wouldn’t it be cool to have different ways to try and save those people? Say there is only one person, so you quickly rush over there and swoop down and get the person out of the way, or you could try and catch the car in mid-air TASM2 movie style. If there was say a group of people you could spin a web net to catch it. Heck, change it up a bit, what if there was nobody in the trajectory range but a person was in the car. You web to the side of it, rip off the door, and pull the civilian out saving him/her. You save the people and then immediately go back to pursue the chase. Simple really.

Loading Screens-

I don't want to hop on a police car chasing an imaginary thug just to start the mission. I want to be able to have something akin to the beginning of ASM2 movie. While Spidey is swinging he see’s a couple of blocks away a car chase is happening. The action should already take place when you are nearby to trigger it, maybe by you’re spider-sense alerting you(?). It'd add another fun factor to the game (reaching the cop cars and the car(s) they are chasing). Also wouldn't it be cool to swing through NYC and see a burning building all in a seamless motion. This could go along with the smashing through windows thing I talked about earlier, you could see the building and try to build enough speed to smash through the window.

Smaller crimes-

How about some window cleaner falling down a building and you quickly try to rescue him? Hell I'd even love it if there was the occasional kid being bullied in an alley and your sole appearance makes the bullies run away? The smaller crimes should be a lot more common, a burning building should be the highlight (or a deadlock). It destroys the immersion when there are multiple building that have been burned down, as I feel stuff like that should affect the environment.

Peter Parker Gameplay

Free-roam-

It would be cool to walk along the streets, and see a petty crime. Add some radius/area check to every crime and when you enter that present us with a choice. Suit up and engage OR call it a day and ignore. If you engage it finds the closest ally for you to change into the Spidey suit. Once we are done you can either find an alley or change back into Peter or stay in the costume and swing around. If you go over by the crime you just finished there are a few cop cars, criminals tied up in webbing and cops fencing off the area so you can't walk there as Peter. If you choose to ignore the crime it shows Peter calling the police to which they show up. But if you do this it lowers your Heroic Meter. Every side-mission could have something similar to that. Burning building nearby? Engage or have fire fighters take care of it. Cop cars rush by chasing a car? Engage or let them simply disappear by saying no. Deadlock? Criminals are locked up in a car and being driven away if you choose to ignore. Bomb disposal? If you ignore you see a SWAT truck with some bomb disposal squad carrying the defused bomb away. If you’re to some of the more dynamic crimes like chases or burning buildings but you’re in a set range, much like with Spidey you’re spider-sense will alert you about it. It could be so dynamic and different, which is a nice change of pace.

Story/Side Missions-

It would be cool to have special missions both in the story and as side missions where you specifically have to be Peter to take pictures or talk to a friend, or go to places as a reporter.

Visuals

A great game needs a great look. For a comic-book Spidey game I would like something very close to a Next-Gen version of the Edge of Time graphics. It had a sense of reality with a comic booky feel that would be perfect. For cut-scenes it should have something like Ultimate Spider-Man where it was like comic panels, and the characters jumped between them or moved around in them. Easiest way to give you that comic book feel. I would say go full cel-shading, but it looses some of that real feel. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be against it if was cel-shaded in the vain of The Amazing Spider-Man levels in Shattered Dimensions.

Update: After playing Shattered Dimensions again, I want the game to look like the Amazing levels. Same model and everything.

As a side note, this seemed like the best place to put it. It would be cool to have the option to switch to a first-person mode. That would really immerse people into feeling like Spidey especially with the rumble from the controller.

Voice Cast

There are so many people to choose from to voice some of the most iconic characters, but Spidey’s the one you have to get right. My top 5 would be

  1. Chris Edgerly(The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man)
  2. Christopher Daniel Barnes(Spider-Man 1994 AS)
  3. Neil Patrick Harris(Spider-Man: TNAS)
  4. Josh Keaton(Spectacular Spider-Man)
  5. Sean Marquette(Ultimate Spider-Man game)or Drake Bell(Ultimate Spider-Man tv show) for a younger Spidey

So many to choose from though. For the supporting cast, I can’t pin-point who for what character, but it wouldn’t be too hard if they used past voices.

That's all I've got to say. So to wrap things up this was just ideas for a Spider-Man game that would be perfect for me and hopefully other fans of the character as well. So again, sorry this is long, had a lot of ideas. So leave your thoughts down below and comment on what you would like to see, or want. Any characters you want, costumes? How about voices for each character? New ideas are always a plus.
