What's the deal with Juggernaut?

No Caption Provided

Since I was a kid, Juggernaut has been one of my favorite villains. Just like a lot of really powerful villains, I feel like he gets shafted by Marvel in many of his combat showings. This goes for a lot of their villains who on paper sound insanely powerful, like Apocalypse, High Evolutionary, Ronan the Accuser, etc., but end up being victims of bad writing or weird plot devices. Nevertheless, many do agree that Juggernaut is obviously powerful and has many showings holding his own when written properly.

So it was to my excitement that Marvel has officially brought back Cain Marko as the Juggernaut prior Secret Wars in Amazing X-Men #16:

In this appearance, Cyttorak, the cosmic demon that empowers the Juggernaut, gave Cain all the power he could possible give. As noted in the above scan, this allowed for the Juggernaut to have no weaknesses. Cain was even quoted saying he has enough power to even "kill Cyttorak himself." Anyway, this fight ended with Colossus using Juggernaut's unstoppable momentum against him and by moving out so Juggernaut could fall off a crumbling cliff. The fight ended right there. So much for having no weaknesses?

Juggernaut made his giant return post-Secret Wars return in X-Men: Blue #1, with his long time pal, Black Tom Cassidy. I say giant literally because Juggernaut appears to now be drawn bigger than ever. He's extremely enraged at Cyclops for murdering Professor X. Problem is, this is a young Cyclops from the past who has no idea what Juggernaut is talking about.

So Juggernaut got BFR'd again, and this time, but young Beast's recently learned magical powers? Uh ok.

Juggernaut's next post-Secret Wars appearance was against Iceman in Iceman #5:

Again, the unstoppable one got embarrassingly BFR'd, this time by a gang of snow people while encased in ice then sent to SHIELD. Really? Damn.

In less than a month, Juggernaut made another appearance after being apprehended by SHIELD thanks to Iceman, this time in Uncanny Avengers #29.

As a Juggernaut fan, I was looking forward to this fight because the writer, Jim Zub, stated this in how he was planning to write Juggernaut in his Uncanny Avengers appearance:

Marvel.com: One factor we know for sure plays in is The Juggernaut. What’s going on that puts him on the team’s doorstep with a commitment to destroy them? What is motivating Cain Marko to target them?

Jim Zub: Juggernaut has recently been battered around by the X-Men Blue team and Iceman and is now lashing out, itching to get revenge on everyone and everything. The Unity Squad inadvertently gets in his way and the results are destructive and brutal.

Marvel.com: As a writer, what attracted you to Juggernaut as a villain for this moment? What makes him the uniquely right choice to threaten the team right now?

Jim Zub: I’m writing Juggernaut a bit more like a force of nature than just a villain. He’s bulldozing through everything in his path and even with the heavy-hitters we have on the Unity Squad, they’re hard pressed to handle him, especially in their currently disorganized state. His rampage forces them to pull together once again, but it also brings some other tensions to the surface as a few members of the team don’t follow orders and something terrible happens because of it.

Sweet! Jim acknowledges that Juggernaut has been jobbing lately and understands Juggernaut is much more than a normal villain, but a force of nature. So, let's get to Juggernaut's fight with the Uncanny Avengers!

I did not want to post the entire fight, but despite having the advantage of blind siding the team after his unexpected escape from SHIELD captivity (read the store you'll know how), Juggernaut just ended up getting BFR'd yet again this time to the Crimson Cosmos aka Cyttorak's realm. Besides that, the team did no damage to him and Rogue was able to send him flying a few dozen feet with a punch he was not expecting.

But nevertheless, what was the point of that appearance or any of the last few Juggernaut appearances? The writer was promising a force of nature, hell-bent on ending his losing steak, but all we got was another Juggernaut loss no less.

So my question is, are all these recent Juggernaut appearances and embarrassing losses, all leading to something bigger and badder for Cain Marko? Like he will come back to be the lead antagonist in an upcoming event or he'll return with newer abilities (i.e. teleportation to prevent BFR loss)? Or is he just the "go to" brick jobber at Marvel these days? He's arguably one of the most well known brick/bruiser in the Marvel Universe, next to Hulk and Thing and probably the second most popular X-Men villain, next to Magneto, so it surprises me that he's getting shafted a lot lately especially since we went years without Cain Marko as the Juggernaut.

Maybe I am reading too much into it, but I can't imagine these very recent patterns of laughable losses could be an accident. If not, then Marvel needs to step it's writing up. Could you imagine if every Doomsday appearance ended with DC sending Doomsday into a magical portal or teleporting him somewhere else and the end?
