Piccolo is more Gohan's mentor to me. My favorite mentor-apprentice relationship is Minato-Team 7(Naruto). Favorite real life is Socrates - Plato - Aristotle - Alexander the Great.

Overall they are marketed to an adult audience, with few other demographics in mind, while MCU movies hit nearly every demographic, making them more popular with people overall.

DC basically could've had the same popularity, but wanted to be a different animal after the success of MCU movies, so they went serious instead, thus being 'dark' like most say.
