Batman Family

"Batman Family," (or Bat Family, Batsquad) is the informal name for a group of characters closely associated with Batman, generally costumed vigilantes who either have been trained by Batman or operate in Gotham City with his tacit approval. The group functions like a tactical unit of similarly-minded superheroes who operate in and around Gotham, with Batman as its team leader and, in many cases, its dispatch. Various members of the group are usually seen interacting with one another and assisting in each others cases, even within their respective series. Although some members occasionally resent Batman’s intrusion into their lives, all respect him as a legend within the superhero community and rarely dare to challenge his authority. Most of the members also have a strong rapport with the Dark Knight due to their long and close relationships with him over the years, and consider him a close friend and ally, and acknowledge that he most likely shares that sentiment, no matter how adverse he is to actually showing it. In a 2002 storyline in which Bruce Wayne is accused of murder, Batman's friends gather to prove his innocence. It has also been implied through Batman's history that this network serves as a surrogate family for Batman and keeps him from slipping too far into his ruthless vigilante persona.

  • There are a plethora of superheroes without superpowers but of them all none are more inspiring and possesses the will to rely on their own scientific knowledge, detective skills, and athletic prowess quite like Bruce Wayne. He is regarded as one of the world's greatest detectives. In JLA, Superman describes Batman as "the most dangerous man on Earth," able to defeat a team of superpowered aliens all by himself in order to rescue his imprisoned teammates. He is a master of disguise, often gathering information under the identity of Matches Malone, a notorious gangster. Additionally, the Batman has been repeatedly described as one of the greatest martial artists in the DC Universe (top 10), having either trained with or fought against the very best of them including such notables as Lady Shiva, Bronze Tiger, and Richard Dragon. Honing his mind and body to peak physical and mental conditioning, Bruce Wayne is the perfect weapon on the war against crime and injustice.

  • Alfred is quite a brilliant man. He primarily keeps up day-to-day operations of Batman’s home of Wayne Manor and maintains much of the equipment of the Batcave beneath it. A former actor, he can use his acting and disguise skills to help Batman in the field when necessary, and is even capable of impersonating Bruce Wayne on the telephone convincingly. He has also provided first aid up to and including suturing wounds and removing bullets, as well as occasional tactical support. With time, he has increased his surgical skills, and he's now able to perform arthroscopic surgery and other advanced medical procedures, thus limiting, if not eliminating, the need for hospital medical treatment even in front of grievous injuries.

While not as skilled at hand-to-hand combat as Bruce Wayne, Alfred is still nearly as resourceful. During a time at which he was kidnapped, he readily escapes and overcomes his captors without disturbing the cut of his suit.

Presumably due to his lack of superpowers, the advanced combat training Bruce's other associates have, and Alfred's age, Alfred is the only member of the "Batman Family" that Bruce does not mind using a firearm, in his case favoring a shotgun.

Alfred is a pioneer in and has also mastered several fields of rose breeding (even creating his own, the "Pennyworth Blue"), computer programming, computer engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, nanotechnology, and biotechnology as he single-handedly builds, programs, and maintains much of Batman's next-generational technology such as the Batcomputer.

  • Commissioner James (or Jim as some people call him) Gordon was the first supporter of Batman on the Gotham City Police Department. A trusted ally to Batman in his war on crime it's implied the he's seemingly one of the first to deduce (after being rescued by Batman without his mask on and seemingly appeared to have seen him as Bruce Wayne. However Jim denies that he saw anything due to not wearing any glasses at that time) Batman's identity but appears to keep it a secret in his aid towards the Batman's cause.

  • Dick Grayson possesses the peak athletic strength and endurance of a man in his mid/late twenties who regularly engages in intensive physical exercise. His detective and martial arts skills rival those of Bruce Wayne. He is a master of dozens of martial arts disciplines and was rigorously trained by his mentor in everything from escapology to criminology, fencing, stealth, disguise, and numerous other combat/non-combat disciplines.

He is a master of a half-dozen martial arts disciplines (including aikido, savate, judo, and capoeira) with an emphasis on aikido, as well as being armed with twin Eskrima sticks made from an unbreakable polymer.

Grayson is a prodigious natural athlete, possessing a peak human level of agility/acrobatic skills. He is generally regarded as the greatest human acrobat in the DC Universe. He is the only person on Earth who can do the quadruple somersault (formerly one of three, the other two being his parents). Having had the finest education as Bruce Wayne's ward, he speaks with fluency in English, French, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Japanese and has some knowledge of Romany, the alien language of Tamaran, and American Sign Language. He is also a brilliant and experienced strategist with superlative leadership skills, having served as leader to the Titans, the Outsiders, and even the Justice League. Additionally, Dick's interpersonal skills and efforts to remain in contact with other heroes makes him a master at rallying, unifying, and inspiring the superhero community, a skill in which he has surpassed his mentor.

Aside of having access to the Wayne family fortune and resources as Bruce Wayne's adopted son, Dick also inherited a trust fund left by his parents, which Wayne had Lucius Fox to look after and placed it under an interest after he took him in. However, Dick never had a chance to use his family's money as he never learned about it until he relocated to Blüdhaven. After nearly a decade of dormancy, the trust fund grew to a significant sum, leaving him independently wealthy. However, Dick only uses his wealth for emergency purposes, maintains employment and lives modestly. He is also a co-owner of Haly Circus.

  • Tim Drake has been trained by Batman and other instructors across the world, including Lady Shiva. Tim was able to fend off several notorious assassins from the Council of Spiders at once while protecting Tam Fox and also in the end game of his plan to destroy several League of Assassins bases; earning commendation from Ra's al Ghul himself who was watching the fight from afar. He was also able to briefly hold his own against Dick Grayson as Batman during their encounter prior to his leaving Gotham. Grayson also has recognized him as an equal.

At the age of about nine years old, Tim Drake was able to deduce Robin's secret identity as Dick Grayson when Robin performed a quadruple somersault, in which Grayson was only one of the three people who could perform such a flip. This deduction also allowed Drake to deduce that Grayson's guardian Bruce Wayne was Batman. Drake's intellect has allowed him to deduce a majority of other heroes' identities including Flash and Superman. In addition, after defeating Ra's al Ghul's master plan to assassinate everyone Bruce Wayne cared about and ruining the Wayne Family fortune, Ra's has addressed Tim as "Detective", a title the villain once only reserved for Bruce Wayne. His intellect has enabled him to excel in computer science and a grasp of assorted scientific techniques, including biology, engineering, and genetics, which he has been shown to use in his attempts at re-cloning Superboy.

Drake, like Dick Grayson, has served as leader to Young Justice, the Teen Titans, and even being placed in charge of the rescue efforts of Blüdhaven by Superman, following the attack made by Deathstroke and his fellow villains.

  • Having been trained by the League of Assassins since birth, Damian is already a master martial artist. Under the tutelage of Dick Grayson he is training in the disciplines of forensics, acrobatics, criminology, disguise, and escapology. Damian is skilled in mimicking voices and speech patterns of others accurately, as he was able to imitate Tim Drake's to bypass the Batcave's voice recognition security systems. Damian has demonstrated to have highly advanced engineering skills, as he was able to complete his father's plans of building a flying Batmobile, the construction of which Alfred described as "being an endless source of frustration to (Damian's) father". Damian is also a capable businessman despite of his young age, and currently involves with Wayne Enterprises with its board members. He also has been trained in every weapon known to man as shown in the Blackest Night event.

  • Barbara Gordon took numerous self-defense classes in judo and karate, earning brown belts, prior to her tenure as Batgirl and is described as being a "star athlete." Although, she was not as proficient as the Black Canary, or the Huntress in the martial arts, as Batgirl, Barbara was still a very skilled martial artist & an outstanding acrobat, having been further trained by Batman himself. Following the events of The Killing Joke, Barbara Gordon continued to train in the martial arts as Oracle, despite being paralyzed from the waist down. She has extensive skills with eskrima fighting sticks, small firearms, and batarangs; she customarily keeps a pair of eskrima sticks stored in the armrests of her wheelchair as a contingency.

Prior to the character's career as a vigilante, Barbara Gordon developed many technological skills, including vast knowledge of computers and electronics, expert skills as a hacker, and graduate training in library sciences. Gordon is also written as having a genius-level intellect and naturally possessing a photographic memory. Like Batman, Barbara Gordon originally used a wide variety of computer electronics and gadgets during her early adventures as Batgirl. These included an infrared scanner built into the cowl of her costume, various bat-inspired weaponry, and the "Batgirl Cycle." According to Gail Simone, Oracle maintains control over the twelve technologically advanced satellites that were created by Lex Luthor during his tenure as President of the United States.

Oracle places her considerable skills and knowledge at the disposal of many of the DC universe's heroes. She is a skilled hacker, capable of retrieving and dispersing information from private satellites, military installations, government files, and the properties of Lex Luthor. Batman, himself a genius with a wide knowledge base and access to vast information resources, routinely consults Oracle for assistance.

  • As well as being a master thief Selina Kyle has gymnastic and martial arts training, which is perfect when it comes to leaping roof to roof, or taking down whoever stands in her way. With her gymnastic background, Selina quickly learns martial arts at the instruction of the "Armless Master". She's also known as one of the strongest on again off again love interest of Batman.

  • A martial arts prodigy and daughter of the assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. Batman and Oracle trained her as the next Batgirl. After abandoning this role, she briefly became leader of the League of Assassins. It is revealed later that the mercenary Deathstroke is responsible for brainwashing and influencing Cassandra's villainous activities. She has since been legally adopted by Bruce Wayne as his daughter. Recently, Cassandra ceased being Batgirl due to apparent frustration, but no specific reason was given for her abandoning the role.

  • Helena Rosa Bertinelli, who was born into one of Gotham City's most prominent Mafia families, was a withdrawn girl. At the age of six, she was kidnapped and raped by an agent of another Gotham crime family. Her parents send her to a boarding school and assign a bodyguard for her protection. After she witnesses the mob-ordered murder of her entire family at the age of 8, she crusades to put an end to the Mafia returning to Gotham to make her debut as the Huntress.

After Helena's exile from Gotham, ordered by Batman, who finds her to be too violent and out of control. In an extended retreat with Richard Dragon and Vic Sage (The Question), she tries to achieve better emotional balance, returning to Gotham to confront her true father and learn more about her family's murder.

The Huntress becomes involved with Oracle and Black Canary joining Birds of Prey, establishing a close friendship with Black Canary in the process as their initial storyline featured them going up against a man called Braun who had seduced and left them both.

Batman thinks of Huntress as, "so much like I was when I started out", and "she's better than she knows..." She's a highly trained athlete and skilled (sometimes underestimated) martial artist.

  • The daughter Cluemaster is like the rest of the Batman family, Stephanie has no superhuman powers. She has been trained extensively by Cassandra Cain, Batman, and the Birds of Prey in martial arts, acrobatics, strength training, interrogation, and detective skills.

After Stephanie took on the Batgirl identity, Barbara Gordon designed a new costume for Stephanie more in line with the rest of the Bat-family's. It is equipped with kevlar and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer to protect against ballistic, flame, and electrical attacks. Stephanie's Batsuit also carries a wireless relay within the cowl, permitting her to remain in contact with Barbara. The suit also allows Barbara to monitor Stephanie's vital signs. Stephanie now also uses a collapsible bo staff, similar to the one that Tim Drake uses; it is implied that she had been trained by Cassandra Cain in using it before assuming the Batgirl mantle.

  • Bruce Wayne has returned to present day Gotham City and is prepared to take his war on crime to the next level, by essentially "franchising" it by drafting, training and commanding a team of heroes who will fight crime on a global scale. A team similar in a sense to the inspired heroes of the Batmen of All Nations (aka the International club of heroes).

  • The daughter of Ra's al Ghul and is the mother of Damian Wayne (and the only reason she's on this list). After learning of her son's intention to remain Robin, as well as his new devotion to his father's family, Talia has disowned Damian in favor of another son she will create.

  • As Batwoman, Kane lacks any superpowers, and instead relies on her martial artistry and Batman-inspired equipment when fighting crime. Although the original Kathy Kane did not display any martial art skill during the Silver Age, the Modern Age Kane is depicted as a skilled martial artist and detective. Both incarnations of the character are written as the heiress of a family whose fortune is comparable to the wealth of Bruce Wayne. Subsequently, Kane possesses the finances to produce an arsenal of equipment similar to Batman's. While the Silver Age Batwoman used weaponry disguised as feminine items like lipstick and a compact, the Modern Age Batwoman's arsenal includes a baton-like device which can extend from the center in length that has Bat-shaped attachments at each end, Batarangs, and a Batman-inspired grappling hook. Kate's equipment is given to her by her father, a colonel in the U.S. Army, and is usually adapted models from military equipment. Her gloves are specially designed to climb and their bracer points are throwing weapons.

  • Together they form the Worlds Finest. One of the greatest duos in the world.

  • Becoming fed up with the politics and practices of the Justice League, Batman formed the Outsiders to have his own unit to perform on his terms.

  • Comprised of the worlds greatest heroes. Various incarnations find themselves depending on their close friend and ally against injustice as the key to various victories.

  • The Batmen of All Nations are heroes around the world who were inspired by Batman and Robin to become crime-fighters.

As the legend of the Batman grew it reached the whole world. Many people in other countries were inspired to become superheroes themselves. Years later, Batman decided to hold the first meeting with his counterparts in Gotham City. Many years after this they hold another meeting or reunion of sorts and some members perish at the hands of the Black Glove.

As a way of expanding his reach on his war on crime globally, Batman will be started his own Batmen of All Nations called Batman, Inc. It's essentially the franchising of the inspirational symbol that is the Batman!

  • Detective Renee Montoya was added into the comics in the 1990s as a character adapted from the animated series. Her sexual orientation was unwillingly outed by Two-Face. She later quit the GCPD when her partner Crispus Allen was murdered and the man responsible got off. Renee, the second person known as the Question, occasionally fights crime with the current Batwoman, who is her on-again-off-again lover. During the Countdown, Oracle solicits the assistance of the Question and Batwoman. Although they promptly refuse "Bird" status, they have on at least two occasions worked under the orders of Oracle.

  • Michael Washington Lane was once known as The "Third Ghost of Batman," one of a series of Batman impostors created by Dr. Simon Hurt, has recently become the new Azrael wearing a mystical suit of armor (and swords of fire and ice) that were once given to the original Batman by Talia al Ghul.

  • Kitrina Falcone is the younger sister of Mario Falcone. Mario abused Kitrina mentally and physically due to her uniqueness. "Kittyhawk" became Catgirl, Catwoman's sidekick, after befriending Selina Kyle. Catwoman is believed to be related to the Falcone's. It's rumored that her father was actually Carmine "Roman" Falcone. This would make them sisters.
