Basic Information
John, who originally went by the title Mentis whilst crime-fighting, is the son of Samuel Elliott, alias Mentoman. His father's work moved the family around throughout his childhood, ranging from homes in Europe and Asia to those across the country. John was largely forced to self-educate, his asocial behavior and emerging superpowers making it difficult to forge lasting relationships with anyone. The family finally settled down in Bethesda when John was 17, at which point the full extent of his superhuman abilities became known. John attended a four-year college throughout the later seventies and early eighties before going to law school. Specializing in metahuman cases, he serves as a special consultant for both extra-normal defendants and for the prosecution. John's superhero career as Mentis continued throughout this time, though balancing the two separate identities eventually proved too stressful. John retired in 1997, maintaining his career as a lawyer instead.
Powers: Quantum Psycho-Synchronicity
By nature of his meta-human genetics, John's mind is capable of breaching the metaphysical barriers separating his brainwaves from reality, essentially converting his thought process into a physical force which might interact with his surroundings. John's cortex is not larger than that of an ordinary man, but rather, more efficient; it is speculated that his neurons are nearly thirteen times smaller than those of an ordinary man, as well as more densely clustered. Thus, they are capable of transmitting information far more quickly than those of an ordinary man, which would theoretically grant John a faster thought process. Instead, however, the majority of these neurons are not concerned with conventional thought at all; rather, they measure the vast quantities of information which John absorbs from his surroundings, which consists mostly of the intercepted neural oscillations (or brainwaves) of other beings. These brainwaves are then translated into coherent thought within John's cortex, essentially granting him the power to read minds. By "responding" through thought of his own, John is capable of speaking within another's head, or even forcibly inspecting their thought process through psychic interrogation. By inflicting damage within another's brain, he can delete memories from their mind; he finds this disturbing, however, and he refuses to intentionally read minds, likening it to sexual assault.
Intercepting and affecting brainwaves, while still an extraordinary power, is the least of what John is physically capable of. His neurological oscillations can be literally made physical through focus, granting them a mass and electric charge through quantum conversion. It is unknown where the energy comes from to convert these brainwaves into a force capable of interaction with physical matter, though it has been theorized that John is constantly absorbing and converting ambient cosmic radiation into a usable energy source through his highly advanced brain. The result is a refined form of telekinetic interaction, bolstered by his thought, which he might use to move matter at high speeds or propel himself through the air.
From the age of 17, a dense telekinetic energy field constantly surrounded John, a natural response to a car accident which claimed his mother's life. The trauma ingrained within him a constant subconscious need for physical safety, which manifests in the nigh-impenetrable telekinetic field. This field can be relaxed through simple thought, or expanded through focus to envelop others. By moving the telekinetic field, John can move himself, the invisible armor of charged brainwaves carrying him through the air at high speeds. This field protects him from the detrimental effects of air resistance, environmental extremes, and anaerobic environments, sustaining his breathing through an unknown chemical process and preventing him from suffocating during high-altitude flights. John can, through this psycho-kinetic field, "hold his breath" for extended periods of time. The field intercepts harmful radiation, as evidenced by John's many flights beyond the upper atmosphere, during which he would've been exposed to intense solar radiation. He returned unharmed, indicating the field is capable of adapting its wavelengths to protect him. This subconscious adaptation is what renders the field, and his abilities, so versatile. The field renders him invulnerable to conventional physical harm, and amplifies his strength beyond measure. His upper strength level is largely unknown, and when he chooses to move something unimaginably heavy, he typically does so through telekinesis, not physical lifting.
John's telekinetic attacks and telepathic interactions are different from those of typical metahumans because they do not come from within his hands. Rather, the waves come directly from his head, circular projections visible whenever high-speed forces are involved. John often stimulates his forehead with his fingers whilst using telekinesis, his middle and forefingers resting on his brow with his thumb lower towards his cheek. If the strain becomes more intense, both hands will be used.
John's body chemistry is also uniquely inhuman. He ages more slowly than an ordinary man, having reached his physical peak around the age of forty. His hair is slightly graying around the ears, but beyond that, age has not slowed him down. His cells are also apparently capable of regenerating at a faster rate than those of an ordinary man, granting John a notable healing ability which enables him to recover from the strain of crimefighting should he ever be injured. This healing ability serves largely to mitigate the damage done to his cells through exertion, the acid buildup that occurs through fatigue mostly nullified through this enhanced cellular alteration. John still eats, sleeps, and produces waste, though he could feasibly survive for longer without each.
Fighting Ability
John possesses no fighting skill beyond that of an experienced metahuman brawler. His superhuman powers have largely, in his mind, rendered close-quarters combat utterly useless, his strength enough to pulp most opponents with a single well-placed blow. Thus, he does not divert time and energy to training his body for combat, nor studying advanced martial arts as so many of his colleagues do. Oftentimes, he will not even bother to fight physically, simply attacking through intensely directed quantum brainwaves. While John could feasibly use telepathy to end battles quickly, he likens doing so to sexual assault; invading the sanctity of another's mind, to him, is a grave violation. While it is true he often picks up on extraneous thoughts during moments of intensity, or if a person is thinking "too loudly" (in his words), he does not physically attempt to pry into another's psyche under nearly all conditions. However, if one is intensely focused nearby him, he'll often pick up on that focus and its object; thus, during combat, he often exhibits a second-sense of sorts, rendering him capable of predicting opponents' moves or actions.
