While Kyle's form is reminiscent of a human, asides from the fur and protruding lower canine, he is no closer to a human than a fish. The reason for his humanoid form is only due to his extended amount of time he spent with humans. Unlike most beings, Kyle has no set genetic code. Instead, his genes are adaptive, naturally shifting to resemble whatever the most prominent creature is around him. It wasn't until Kyle was fourteen that he finally had enough control of his powers to maintain his human-like state even when around other animals. Once he was confident that he could always return to being human, he finally began testing the limits of his ability. After a couple more years he'd gotten a hang of morphing into nearby animals, gaining not only their body but aspects of their minds and instincts. However, it wasn't until he reached his twenties that he was able to mentally store the genes of animals he'd been in close proximity to, allowing him to transform at will. He's never managed to shake the green fur that follows him no matter what form he takes, but he likes it that way. There are various problems that prohibit him from changing every couple seconds. One problem that persists no matter what form he takes is that depending on how drastic of a change his body has to undergo it can be draining to swap on the fly. While shifting does heal any wounds he might have sustained doing so is extremely taxing. Something as major as regrowing a large limb would take him out of the fight completely. A problem that only rears it's head when he changes into a creature substantially larger than him is the massive amount of calories it takes to pilot bodies such as that. As such he either needs to consume food while transformed or shift back quickly. There is also the issue of needing to have encountered an animal before he can morph into it, however, within a couple trips to the zoo Kyle picked up nearly all of the most common animal genes. While there are countless genes he doesn't have, there are rarely times he finds himself completely lacking in a suitable form. |
