Over the counter medication

Ibuprofen is a NSAID or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is known to help improve the pain in patients. Naproxen is another such medicine that helps in providing temporary relief from severe lower back pain in a person. However, when choosing such medication, you should always take into consideration the side effects of the pill. NSAID’s generally come with side effects such as kidney related problems or gastrointestinal problems. Acetaminophen usually causes harm to the liver. However, if taken with care and under supervision, no such harm should fall on the person.

There are also several gels and creams that are supposed to provide immediate relief for lower back pain. Bengay, Zostrix, Aspercreme, etc. are a few examples of such creams.

Ice packs and Hot water bottles

Ice packs are known to create a numbness of the area which helps in providing the required relief from a case of severe back pain. Once the pain lessens, hot water bottles are recommended. This too helps in reducing the pain and keeping it at a bearable level or even eliminating it completely. Alternating between the two is a good option.
