Playing With Poetry

I hate poetry. Ok, maybe that is a bit of hyperbole. While I don’t necessarily hate it per say, I have never been able to properly appreciate it either.   Too often I find myself oblivious to the nuances of the metaphors and symbolism. Beyond that, my inability to fully visualize what I read frequently derails any attempts to even enjoy it superficially. While my lack of imagination is rarely an issue while reading proper narrative, I’ve found that it is an absolute detriment when trying to appreciate poetry.

That is not to say that I am entirely dismissive of poetry as a whole. It is impossible to read Emily Dickinson’s heartfelt and personal lines or Robert Frost’s realism and lyrical imagery and not be at least somewhat drawn in. Yet, there has always been a seemingly impenetrable barrier between me and poetry. I suppose if I had ever taken the time to try and break it down my opinions would be different, but I never have.

So, why am I talking about poetry on a website about comic books? I realized that I had never seen any poetry fan fiction before. I’m still relatively new to the idea of fan fiction, so I’m sure it exists and I just haven’t seen it. I can’t help but wonder what types of poems would be appropriate to comic book characters – a glorious epic about the exploits of Thor, or a dirty limerick about Tony Stark’s private life? Has anyone written any fan fiction poetry, or had the urge to try? Despite my complete ignorance of the medium, I admit to being tempted.
