hmmm....Okay, I can see you're a Sentry fan judging by your post name, and all respect for that, as I am a Mar-Vell and kind of, well know, that his powers and rankings are vastly inconsistent with the feats he has done in the comic books, and by comic books I'm obviously referring Captain Marvel Volume One, number one to number sixty two...and the following stories in Marvel Spotlight Volume one, number one two, four and eight, Marvel Graphic Novel number one, as well as the Reed/Weeks/McGuiness Captain Marvel Volume Four, issues one to five.

When dealing with a character kept dead for so long in a medium where flying men are perfectly acceptible, there is a bit of insight a reader must have on the "reasonable growth and and adaption" of the character in modern times, as shown in the Reed/Weeks mini.

I guess that could be explained as him finding a way to overcome limitations an defeat much more overpowering opponents, perhaps that is what made Mar-Vell worthy to have the name Captain Marvel...putting all that aside though, my fanship, your fanship, and just looking at it pseudo-scientifically, I think Mar-Vell, whose body (not mind) was cloned in the life banks of ISAAC on Titan (Legacy/Captain Marvel III/Photon II/Genis-Vell) was able to defeat Sentry, I think it's a reasonable suggestion (which the writers have touched upon before...in the Thunderbolts epic pitting them against the Avengers team with Reynolds...and again in Captain Marvel Vol. 4, issue #1) that Captain Marvel could defeat Sentry, especially if returning from where he is now (as suggested in Silver Surfer #63 as well as the Earth X trilogy, Paradise X climax in particular where he stays alive after defeating then restoring death itself (and a noteworthy point is that Mar-Vell, says he is going someplace better, which is left open to interpretation, could mean coming to 616, or however the reader wishes to think it, either way, an open plothole.) and strangely looks like a pre-cursor to the visual design of the Sentry (not the Kree Sentry, the Robert Reynolds Sentyy, just sans costume.

Check it out, if you get a chance. This was, of course, before the Sentry "push" by Marvel and Joe Quesada.

However, being objective here....Sentry channels solar energy on a massive level, whereas "Captain Marvel is an energy sponge...he absorbs and manipulates radiation let's see what his limits are.....(next centerfold page) oh."- Radioactive Man - Thunderbolts #122....Captain Marvel is a solar energy powered being, meaning that he can absorb the levels of power  that Sentry emits...to what degree, we can debate, but enough so that Mar-Vell's other skills can take over at that point. I'm not saying Mar-Vell is as technically solar powerful (meaning strictly energy), but he is capable, much more sturdy and focused, that his superior battle skills and awareness, would make this not quite the fight you may think it would be.

So we're basically debating the same pseudo-scientific principals here, without even going into the "mastery" of cosmic awareness (as evidenced in Marvel Graphic Novel #1) nor the basic fighting skills of the warrior born. The best of the best in the entire kree empire, trained from age 9 (source: Young Avengers Presents: #2 2008).

Sentry was defeated by Genis-Vell under the name Photon (after he basically stole it from Monica Rambeau, more great writing by Peter David and company, whomever was on TB's at the time) defeated Sentry by sending him into the negative zone.

Matter of fact, to my knowledge, and correct me if I'm wrong, the only sun in the negative zone is the one Mar-Vell created in Captain Marvel Vol. I Issue #57 (basically the Captain Marvel vs. Thor issue during the award winning Moench/Broderick run). However, I haven't seen it acknowledged since.

Anyway, I'm not out to put down Sentry, I feel like in the MU, and tell me if you don't feel this way, that everybody can beat anybody on a given day...in other words, it means that some people just can beat some people and others can not, but yet they might beat one that the other can not. Are you following me here?

For example...Captain America may be able to defeat Wolverine, but yet for some reason has trouble with Spidey, who can't seem to beat Wolverine.... or what have you..(I'm not saying any of these are true, I'm just pulling names off the top of my head to illustrate a point.)

Mar-Vell is more than able to deal with Sentry's solar power, perhaps not as big with it as Reynolds, but close enough, that it essentially negates his "million exploding suns" angle, to where it can be more of an even fight, and Mar-Vell can use his hand to hand skills, battle instinct, and true mastery of the cosmic awareness to where he can do a Mar-Vell form of a vulcan like mind meld (as shown in Hulk Vol I., #246) to enter Sentry's disturbed mind and pretty much make him a non factor.

This is also not even touching upon the negative zone aspects, as far as the nega bands being a gate way.

Captain Marvel wins this one, hands down...even Marvel boy gave him a good run (from what I hear...I wouldn't know, I boycott those comics) as did his inexperienced clone defeated him....just imagine what the real one would do.

Now, this is not to insult you or your guy, but it just makes sense.

The fact that they have kept him dead might make it seem the non popular choice, however, that's not the reality (or as much reality as you can get in these discussions) of it, the bottom line is that Mar-Vell has more fight in him, and is strong enough solar wise, to where Sentry's solar based powers become, I wouldn't say a complete non factor (I'm not saying it wouldn't be good) but not enough to make the difference that Mar-Vell's sheer Warrior skills and Cosmic Awareness would.

Sentry is a fractured mirror. Imagine what Mar-Vell could do with that....Mar-Vell is a true warrior, albeit reluctant one at times, however as Silver Surfer said in SS#63, "such is often the lot of the true hero."

Again, not to take anything from your guy, but once you look at the schematics of it, not what somebody writes in a stat book written long after the character was killed off, and compare to the actual feats the character has done, as well as Sentry's interaction with the never-ending gang of Mar-Vell replacements....

Original Marvel wins, hands down.

Thank you,

*peace

Yeahhh..at the time I could see that, what I mean by that is...that is probably what it would have been like had Marvel the common sense to capitilize, or even promote,  their own original avatar character. (Rather than backing down and hiding it over a name since DC's renewal of a name from a character they put out of business) In other words, Captain Marvel needs the depth and insightful multi-faceted depth of the character Mar-Vell rather than the other way around as has been chronicled.  If not, then why have it in the 1st place?

At the time, a large Thanos as portrayed in the Captain Marvel comic books, probably would have been a robotic thing, CGI could help this, however, I'd rather be dissapointed in that and have real human emotion and depth withan actor with presence than a mere animated figure....perhaps if there were a way to combine both...(?)

Especially with Jack Palance (I'm not sure Jack would have had the same 'physical' presence he brought to the Dracula role in 1972 as he would have in the 1980's in a Captain Marvel film as Thanos)  portraying a more accurate than given credit for version of Dracula in Dan Curtis' Dracula (1972)...I was thinking Drax, but who cries for Anthony Zerbe? (That should be a song title to go along with Alice Cooper's solo work "Ballad of Dwight Frye" - you'll have to excuse me, I prefer Alice as a 'them' rather than a 'him', guitar wise, Michael Bruce + etc.)

However, what about doing this in a current setting? Is Sam J. Jones really as old as you say? Can't that be used in the script of the comeback?

I'm tired of would've's and should've's, this is a great story they're just copying....I think it's the ideal candidate for this "return' story everyone regardless of company, DC is probably laughing at us (MARVEL) for making Barry Allen's Flash a success, but the game isn't over yet, so moving forward....

We know what a 1980's Captain Marvel film would have looked like, but what about one now...today?

I'm thinking Gerard Butler (I still think lio or Brad  could do it but let's explore what could be feasibly possible given the company's assenine stance on the hero) or that guy who played Bones in Star Trek, that is SOOOOO underrated as Mar-Vell.

If I may make a humorous suggestion....Robert DuVall as the Supreme Intelligence. LOL

he makes him fear his worst fears ever and makes him cry"

Well, that's gonna be hard for a man who isn't afraid, and is willing  to die for he believes in, powers aside.

It's great work on the Sam J. Jones as the 1980's Captain Marvel film thing, thanks for your contributions. Great stuff, not sure on the Palance as Thanos thing though, but cool idea. (Palance? Why Palance?) Explain...

"dude you are awfully infatuated with Captain Marvel, while I like the guy. you have to be honest with yourself, do you really think anyone would make a full length movie about him? I don't.  DC's Marvel will get a movie before Mar-Vell. and like I said don't get me wrong I like the guy, but I'm also a realist. "

I'm fully aware of what we're up against...however I don't think it's a big as you may believe. How about putting your Mar-Vell pic on this thread to? That was cool!

AWESOME!

Dude, that's awsome...why aren't they doing this? If not with Jones than somebody? Why do we have to deal Noh-Vell, Noh-Varr, whomever, as Captain Mar-Vell? I mean, the same thing can be said about The Flash, I mean you can make a good story bringing back these characters...I mean just sign

Gerard Butler

or Zach Efron or whoever, it's the character that matters, but why let the death story be such a stone wall because writers are too afraid to challenge it, it's a perfect 3 part paradigm story:

1.warrior 2. rebel hero death 3. return

Why is Marvel so stubborn with this character? Are they afraid they might not be able to write it? Are they afraid to scour the internet for talent that is capable? Because I see a class A superhero in terms of nobility if not marketing (not that it couldn't be, remember they're stubborn and want to keep giving replacements), that has been so unaffected by the times that if his surroundings were darker, which take a look at real life, they are....could be a huge hit for Marvel Entertainment. I mean this could be done, now...it's a perfect hero to use.

The great thing is that during these times creatively, you can't find a better character for that role, a new actor perhpas, but the idea....it's money in the bank, not that I would see any of that or even care, the idea though, it works.

The forgotten icon exiled.

I see  him showing up different because of their innate stupidity on this character's worth (think spectre meets crow) , but I'd be happy as long as it got done. When I said "stars" before I meant stars and in that cosmic kind of shading on a dark figure....

Like you, I'd rather he just show up and that's it, deal with it...it's more about what you do with the uncompromising hero, rather than "how" he got there.

Perhaps if we do it their way, they'll see it. I dunno, though, I think Bendis has different plans for whats-his-name, what a waste.

Awesome artwork, thank you for sharing it with us.
