As they walked and he listened to Lara explain why she loved archaeology he couldn't help but smile. He liked hearing about peoples passions, it was like a way to find out what kind of person they were. But Tom could swear that she looked familiar in some way, it bugged him that he couldn't place it."Well its nice to see that you are so willing to continue your fathers work, so so little of that these days." he said as he thought about his father. He had a stoic man with a hard personality, yet at the same time warm and inviting. Tom use to wish he would become nothing like his father, but now it was clear that he had slowly started to turn into him. It wasn't as bad as he had thought. As they reached this small Italian place he said "I hope this is ok, personally the Italians make the best."Tom smiled as he open the door for Lara.
"Well I hope you do like it." he says with a smile as he starts to walk next to Lara down the street. He had noticed that she had a British accent which was something different which he figured he needed. "Myths and legends huh that seems interesting back in high school I really liked that kind of stuff." he was actually really interested in what she was doing with a book like that. "So why do you have a book like that studying for an exam?Or just one of those life passions things."
This was nice just walking and having a conversation. Something that he had not done in awhile. It was almost surreal how quickly it had been since he got back that he was already getting back to some form of normality. Normal, he chuckled and wondered to himself if he actually knew what that was. Cause ever since his 'accident' he hadn't had a normal life. Even when he was over seas with his daughter he never felt 'normal' just like something was missing. Ever since he hung up the suit he had felt this way, like he wasn't always himself without it on.
Thomas accepts her offer of a handshake "Nice to meet you Lara, I'm Thomas or just Tom to my friends."He bent down to help her pick up her bag and he noticed the book. "Whats Scion? A hobby of yours?" he always liked learning about people a habit from his old days he figured. "Since I so rudely ran into you you must let me take you out to lunch sometime." he said with a smile. Even through he hadn't met this woman before he could swear that he knew her from somewhere but it felt rude to bring it up for some reason. It wasn't just the lunch Thomas wanted but also the company. Since he was back on US soil he figured it was probably time for him to finally move on from his ex-wife.
His ex-wife, Thomas hadn't really thought about them splitting up this second time. He remembered a time when they loved each other, when they would go out and just under a tree and talk. And now she had his daughter over there and she had decided to stay with her mother. All he ever wanted was for them to be a family ,but his daughter knew more about that culture then over here. In some small way he was glad she choose that way cause if he knew himself that well he would be back to his old ways in no time. What was he doing he had to get his mind away from this subject.
"You know what." he said as he checked the time"I'm free now so what do you say." Thomas smiled again.
It was weird being back in the big apple, back in his home country walking these old streets. For the past couple of years Thomas had been living in South Africa with his daughter and ex-wife. Which was what he hoped was a new start away from the world he knew, a world of supernatural beings and over the top villains vying for a chunk of the world.
He had had a different life over seas. A life of relaxing and taking it easy as he let his old suit collect dust over here. Thomas didn't know why he had still paid the rent on his old apartment in New York. He figured it was because he always knew deep down that South Africa wouldn't of last and he would have to come home. As these thoughts were going through his mind he noticed a toy store that a figure of himself or at least MajorUSA in the window. God did he really look that serious in his suit. Thomas went inside and asked how much the figure was and the person behind the counter said that it was an old figure and costed around $50. When he paid for the figure the clerk asked him "Did you ever get to see him in action, he was around this town a lot."Thomas smiled responded "Only what they showed on TV but he was pretty great huh.". "He was one of the best in my opinion. Have a good day." the clerk smiled as he handed Thomas his change.
As he walked out of the store Thomas thought Was, ya thats about right. He pulled out his phone to check the time when he ran into this woman."O my gosh I am so sorry ms." he looked up to see who he had run into.
