The Artbook Review #1 - Cuties

No Caption Provided
128 pages.
Edition: Hardcover.
By M.P. Works, 2003.

Let me take you back, back to the swingin' '60's!  Now, imagine a young Japanese man hunched over his table, slaving away at dozens of comic panels to make his next deadline...

Yeah, that's the one!

Monkey Punch (real name Kazuhiko Kato) has been in the professional art trade for almost fifty years.  His style a devious mix of Sergio Aragonés and Haddon Sundblom.  Sex and violence is the name of the game and as you‘re about to see no one plays it better...

Cuties is a collection of his classic pin-up work spanning 1967-‘76, a full decade of his trademark femme fatales.  The book is broken down into three sections; ‘Cuties’, 'Cuties & Beasts' and ‘Cuties as Comic Heroines’.  The ‘Cuties’ segment is an assortment of solo shots of women in interesting and compromising positions (let your imaginations soar!).  ‘Cuties & Beasts’ is an even more entertaining chapter and my personal favorite, of a few misleadingly dainty ladies taking out men (or beasts) in increasingly creative ways.  The final segment is a small assortment of the women from his various comic series featuring characters such as Fujiko ( Lupin III), June and Naomi (Siamese Cat).

Wicked, witty and one of a kind, Monkey Punch is my favorite artist from the east not solely for his skill or style as much as for the content

of his work.  He’s a storyteller as much as he is an artist and even in his singular pieces this secondary talent often shines through.  His work may be a tad outrageous for some but others will only see a compilation of work that never ceases to be entertaining.  For these

reasons and more, Cuties remains the crown jewel of my collection and I’m honored to have shared some of it with you.

Hopefully this has sparked an interest in some of you to check out the artist and some of his other work.

@M.S. Feather: This should not be in the artist show-off section. The artist show-off is for original art. Contact a mod to have it moved.

I thought the artist show off was for topics about artists and artwork along with the contests, this is about an artist, and a review of his style. Saying a poster has to be the original artist when they're not claiming to be in the first place and they're merely showing appreciation for anothers techniques and style is 'fill in this blank'.

There have been plenty of posts in the show off forum of people posting someone else's work for one reason or another, and it's all been pretty much relevant to this forum just fine.
Of course if a mod did feel it didn't fit, I'm sure they'd move it if they thought it fit better elsewhere, they're pretty good like that :)

@LT1085: Aw, I got all excited when I saw a few comments had been posted this morning thinking someone wanted to discuss some art...only to find it's just a vigilante trying to shut me down! XP

Seriously though, let me throw a hypothetical your way.  Let's say Monkey Punch himself created an account here and posted this work, that would make the same artwork I posted up acceptable.  Also, other members show-off other peoples work here occasionally, be it a friend or family member (as Tonis so valiantly pointed out).  I've also seen general art discussion threads posted here that were accepted, so I couldn't image what fine line I''m breaking to not be able to post my artist show-off thread in the artist show-off forum.

PS- I just wanted to throw in my defense and whatever Shatterstar decides is solely up to him.  I don't want this thread to degrade into another 'Battle Contest #14!', so please refrain from any more off-topic posts.  Thank you kindly. "

The difference is that this is published work and not posted at the request or with the permission of the artist even though you've credited him. Battle contest 14 was a mess before it began. my comments aren't off-topic. I'm not saying that it is a bad post, in fact I think that there should be more like this. However, I don't believe that they belong in the artist show-off and should be moved to general discussion or possibly the artists own forum if there is one.  I'd like to see the artist show-off stay a place for artists in the community.

I didn't realize this was in the Artist Show-Off Forum.  M.S. Feather's blogs are ones I follow and just saw it and commented.   I thought it was in Off-Topic.

@M.S. Feather:  I am not being nitpicky.   I think this might be considered more of a review than anything else.  Please don't feel I am deriding you.
