My "To Read ASAP" List

This list is just to help me keep track of all of the comics I need to read, because my memory is non-existent. I tend to like comics that are dark, dystopian, violent, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, paranormal, western, based off of historical folklore/events (Beowulf, 300, etc.) or have themes of religious fanaticism, solitude, or moral ambiguity. With that said, in the case that anyone actually comes across this list and you like some of the themes I listed, feel free to give me suggestions. The only caveat I have is that the comics need to have a physical edition, and I prefer volumes to issues. :)

List items

  • I'm not one for superheroes, but this one is about a man that becomes immortal and struggles with the concept. Reviews that I've seen have praised the comic for its philosophical ponderings on life and humanity, and how dangerous it can be for a man to wield such power. I think I'll like this.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Religious fanaticism. That is all.

Update 12/19/15: Read it, adored it, now regard it as one of my favorite books of all time (graphic novel or otherwise).

  • Action-packed, punk themes, and teenage assassins...this one doesn't sound as dark as some of the others on this list, but its unique premise and late '80s punk vibe is too interesting to pass up.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Dark, corrupt, action-packed, and having Native American themes, there's a bunch in this that intrigues me.

*Bought the Special Edition with volumes 1 & 2, have not read yet

  • A crime thriller, slasher whodunnit revolving around serial killers. I love true crime and learning of the psychology of serial killers--this will no doubt entertain me.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Zombies are way too over-used in the media nowadays and I'm really tired of playing video games with zombies as the main theme--which says a lot since I put this here. Despite zombie fatigue, this one seems dark enough to still keep me interested.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • I've heard this one's writing can get convoluted and crazy, but that's not enough to keep me from at least trying the first volume. It's western, it's steampunk, and it stars the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, so it'd be really, really hard to go wrong.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Dark, paranormal, creepy...and that art looks fantastic. Looking forward to checking this out.

Update 12/24/15: Read it and felt "meh." It wasn't bad, but I've read better. It had too short of a build up for its big "reveal", imo. I may or may not pick up volume 2 whenever it gets released.

  • Saw this at a Half Price Books and OH MY GOD THE ART. Unfortunately, that copy was torn to shreds, but I've got my eye on this. The lore has always interested me.

Update February 2016: Rented from the library, liked it okay. The art wasn't as professional as it seemed when I flipped through it, but it was still pretty good. Characters were hard to tell apart and had little to no development as the book is based off the literal historical transcripts. In the end, I'm glad I didn't buy it, but I'm glad I read it.

  • Themes of solitude and demon possession. Right up my alley.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • When I saw one of these volumes in my local comic book store, it made me think of the preacher from Twisted Metal: Black. Seriously, look up the cut scenes on YouTube if creepy preachers are your thing, like they apparently are mine.

Update 12/26/15: Read it, will definitely be picking up the other volumes. Fan-freaking-tastic. Not exactly what I thought it'd be, but I don't care. It was offensive, thought-provoking, and all around awesome. ^_^

Update January 2015: Finished the series. Did not care for much of the ending or for the final developments of my favorite character. Basically, the series started off fantastic and ended kind of mediocre, but I'm not bitter, for it was a fun ride.

    *Completed Series

  • I want to buy this as soon as the volume is available.

  • I want to buy this as soon as the volume is available.

  • This looked interesting enough and fun and colorful. I like fantasy, and this one is highly recommended. Flipped through it and am a little put off by the "diversity" ads in the back. Although I'm a woman, I don't rely on my protagonists to be the same gender in order to sympathize, so I didn't choose this comic because the protagonists are women. The ads made me think maybe those are types of people this is catering to. I hope I'm wrong and that I greatly enjoy this. :)

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Murder and the good ol' olden days. 'Nuff said.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Thank God for Amazon. Seriously, I'd have no idea this existed unless they'd recommended it to me randomly. THE ART IN THIS IS GORGEOUS. I can only hope the adventure and the characters are as good as they look.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • There's a scythe on the cover. I don't care what this is about. I'm reading it.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Heard this is some top quality sci-fi, and read a clip from Amazon's preview feature. I was impressed enough to add it to the buy list.

  • The fact that the art reminds me of the crazy and grotesque cartoons of the '90s is the real reason I bought this. The story revolves around adventuring and monster hunting...maybe? I don't know and don't care. The art brought me here.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • This cover is just...amazing. Like a movie poster for some old exploitation film or something. Anyway, a story about a family of anti-heroes that revolves around violence and corruption...it's on my shelf. ;)

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • I want nothing to do with sports (playing racing video games is the closest I get, but that's only because I'm a car whore), but despite this comic having a story revolving around football, I've been told it's about the corruption rather than the sport. Would love to see where this leads.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • I don't like babies (honestly), but I'm pretty sure I'll like this. The art is reminiscent of '90s cartoons (the artist even says he's inspired by such) and it's very gory and grotesque. The story revolves around this guy trying to get this baby to safety and all the chaos that ensues. Sounds crazy...and I like crazy.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Can't remember what this one was about, honestly. Bought it a while back. All I know is that the story was dark (demon possession or something of the like?) and that I like the artist (same guy who did FeLL). We'll see how it goes!

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Crime, guns, violence, espionage, etc. Also, I have to be honest, I kind of like how it has an ugly woman protagonist. I'm not one for requiring this by any means (I'm more likely to buy things with male protagonists despite being a woman, for example), but I find it interesting nonetheless.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • A pretty old fantasy comic whose publisher went defunct. Bought it at a used bookstore and was pretty intrigued by the art. It's a shame I won't have much more than this volume to read of it.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • A story of gods in the modern times (or futuristic? I forget, honestly). I like mythology and various renditions of it, and Lucifer in this looks like she'll be pretty badass. I hope it doesn't tred too far into superhero story territory, but other than that, I have high hopes for it!

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • A bunch of teens get lost in the woods. Has some creepy/scary/horror elements, apparently. It has great reviews so I'll see how I like it.

  • I was recommended this by my local comic store. Had very little interest in the story other than it being horror, but decided to try it. Found out Joe Hill was Stephen King's son, had even less interest (don't like King's writing). Read it, and immediately bought the box set because WOW, is this storytelling. Sympathetic characters (I don't like kid characters, and this story has three at its center...it made me like all three of them, and that's nearly impossible to do). Loved the tiny details, loved all the characters, and even loved the ending. This series wasn't afraid to kill off sympathetic characters (other than one somewhat "cop-out" in the end, imo), and I love that. Very quirky, fun series with doses of humor. Highly, highly recommended.

    *Completed series

  • Gonna be honest--hate this cover. It's nowhere near as good as the multiple single issue comic covers that they released. Science and science fiction is always one of my favorite topics to read about, so I wanted to try this out regardless. Interesting concept of adding fame to science.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • I'm not usually one for teenage drama or all that, but the crazy story behind this one convinced me to try it out. Other than the crazy huge handed-girl of the first page, it looks like it'll be good. (Ha.)

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Not going to lie--I bought this on a whim for the cover art. How gorgeous and crisp and beautiful, right? I found out later that it's a somewhat dystopian/post-apocalyptic story, so that's right up my alley as well. Double win.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • It's historical in nature, so the story is pretty unique and I can't wait to try it.

  • Violence. Cowboys. Blood. Fun.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • I did a Google search one day for "dark comics" and came up with this as one of the recommendations. I bought the first volume not expecting to be impressed, as I'm not into stories about journalists...and boy, was I surprised! I read volume one and quickly realized this was my new favorite comic. The humor, the fun-to-watch protagonist, the '90s flair and references, the all around craziness--jeez, I'm glad I grabbed this. I've been waiting impatiently for a back-ordered volume 2 from my comics store (it's been over a month!!!) but I volume 3 waiting here already because I CAN'T WAIT TO READ MORE OH MY GOOOOOOD---

  • Part crime, part paranormal. I've seen some volumes of this get less-than-stellar reviews, so I held off for awhile, but I'm going to see for myself.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Crime and torture and government...quite a bit going on here that I like reading about. I'm really hoping to get into this!

  • A story revolving around violence, gore, and all around chaos. I like the author quite a bit, too.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Not a huge fan of the cartoony style, but am willing to give this a shot for the story. I like stories involving cannibalism regardless of whether they're humorous, true crime-related, or gory. Bought the first three volumes for cheap.

*Bought volumes 1-3, have not read yet

  • I like fantasy, and I like sad stories. This has both.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • I saw this at the store (and plastic-wrapped) and even though it sounded interesting, the cover art was dull and anthropomorphic animals aren't my thing. Bought it for cheap off of Amazon and flipped through the book and my GOD, is this thing beautiful and much more stylized than the cover would have you believe. Can't wait to read this, but I'm waiting until they add onto it with a volume 2.

*Bought it, have not read yet

  • Vampires aren't really my thing, and neither is Stephen King (I like werewolves and King's son Joe Hill's work better). Why this? The old fashioned setting, mostly. I want to try out the first volume and see if I can get into it.

  • One of the first recommendations I was given after describing what I liked to the guy at the comic store. Crime-ridden and questions the cost of vengeance, which I love.

*Bought the first three books, have not read yet

  • Dark, bloody, and questions what it is to be evil. I don't like superhero type stories, and this one technically involves one, but I'm hoping that it's less noticeable than the dark and bloody bits. :)
