Just Before the Battle I guess when it all comes out in the end this was really anti-climatic.  We start out with a crippled Firebrand.  I know he was part of the team but giving him a super-powered wheel chair and having him continue on the mission after only haveing his back broken for a day to less than a day.  Was way to much.  Forget about being part of the team, how about letting the guy heal?  Next we have a team that can't get along to the point were they are just annoyingly backbiting....

Just Another Tale Alright, there are a ton of Golden Age Comics I have not read.  I could not begin to scratch the surface of the comics that are out there.  All this said this may be the worse one I have ever read.  The first story the Mask (Black Bat) was by far the best story and it was pretty disjointed.  All the others were as dull as dish water.   There were eleven different stories in this comic.  The only superhero tale was the Mask story.  The others were Major Mars a sci-fi tale, Blue...

Shot Down in the Prime of Life 0

Stupid Nazi! I loved this series and I am tremendously sad that this is the final issue.  Maybe it is because it is the last issue but I only gave this book three-and-half stars.  It just seems as if the creators knew this was the end and wanted to give a sense of closure.  That is great and I am glad they did that but, I think it may have hurt this issue.  There were five villains created about four issues ago based on the golden age villains Black Terror and other Project Super Powers heroes u...

Terror Vs. The Universe 0

In this issue all Black Terror has to do is defeat all the heroes in the Project Superheroes universe.  Black Terror is a real superhero.  His battles are epic and this issue is no exception.  That is just one reason I love this series.  There are no small story arcs.  Only the biggest heroes have like Batman and Superman have adventures like this.  They could make about three block buster films out of the series.  I love this comic.  The story has me engaged in guessing because I have no idea w...

Polly wanna Sidekick 0

Done by anyone else I think the Black terror's pirate gimmicks would have gotten silly by now.  Not that they would have to be different.  I am referring to the same gimmicks that have been done here would be lame if someone else did them.  When they gave Black Terror a sword I though "cool!"  When they gave him a ghost ship I though "OK?"  Now that they have given him a woman dressed as a parrot sidekick I thought. "This must be a joke".  Well it wasn't a joke and it didn't need to be.  It work...

Bang Bang This is the five reviews I wrote for the original four issues plus the Death issue that came later.  Contained in this book is Pain,  Fear, Irony, Despair and Death. Pain Only for a comic that is as legendary as the Crow do I feel bad for giving it a rating of four-and-a-half instead of five stars.  Alright, let's remember that the comic is different than the film.  The Crow comic is awesome very awesome but the film did polish the comic and made the story the legend that it is...

This is the End 1

He can go home This is the final chapter of the original Crow saga.  Aptly named Death.  The Crow puts an end to Fun Boy T-Bird and about twenty other gang members.  I surprising aspect of this book however was mercy and forgiveness.  The grants mercy to Two-Tone for no real reason.  Then as the end in order to go on to the after life the crow tells him he must forgive himself.  I loved the forgiveness of the book because it is harder to do than the vengeance.  The violence and vengence came ea...

Walking in on Funboy These are the two reviews I wrote for the original two issues contained in the book Irony and Despair. Irony As a stand alone issue this does not have a lot that happens The Crow faces down Funboy at the Gin Mill and sets up the final meeting between him and T-Bird.  The series has been building toward this moment and this book just seems to crank up the suspense.  This is not a bad book when reading the whole series but it is not as good as the first two as a stand al...

Snuff Said 0

RIP Shelly Webster This is my least favorite issue of the series.  It is not an enjoyable read but is necessary to establish the reason for the desire of revenge the Crow feels.  It is a graphic depiction of the sadistic murder of Eric Draven and the torture, rape and murder of Shelly Webster.  It is a nauseating.  There is not much to like.  It is way worse to read this than it is to read the death of Batman's parents.  It is way too hard to describe how I feel about this issue as there is no ...

Three Hoods Down Two To Go 0

"Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children" -- William Makepeace Thackeray I am amazed at the genius behind these books and can see why the film that came later was such a success.  The problem is I can only see this in retrospect.  If I was to read these books today without knowing the end result I may not have liked them as much.  To be frank I did not see the genius in the film the first time I saw it.  The book is filled with hate and violence.  James O'Barr would ...

A Merry Christmas Review 0

This really says it all. This comic has nothing to do with Christmas, I just wrote the review on Christmas as a dedication to my nerd commitment.  Black Terror 11 is the second part of a two part story.  It is of course really great as are all the comics in this series.  In this issue we see many more of the characters in the Project Superpowers universe, like Flame, Masquerade and one of my favorites Pyroman.  The group of heroes in this universe share a bond that connects them all.  Having al...

The Phantom Galleon Yet another fantastic issue.  The Black Terror has his own ghost ship the Phantom Galleon and he teams up with several of his friends to battle a being that is the worst parts of all the heroes trapped in the urn.    I love the personalities of these characters.  The quick witted and impulsive Pyroman, the strait forward Masquerade and  of course the darkness of the Black Terror.  These characters come alive and I have become attached to nearly everyone.    The stories in th...

Shot through the heart 0

The haunting of Anne Shot through the heart and Black Terror is to blame.  I am not giving much aware here as this is the set op for this comic.  Black Terror goes to the grave of a young twenty year old girl (Anne Goetz) who died when he tried to stop a bank robbery and a bullet ricochet off his chest and into a ventricle of the heart.  There is much more story in this comic but this is how it starts.  I do not believe there is a comic that actually shows these events they are just remembered....

Great Zombie Elvis! 0

Eat your heart out Oh my Great Zombie Elvis this was awesome!  Comic perfection!  I marvel at why this series is not still going.  I loved this book, every page, every panel, every sentence.  This book was what all comics should aspire to be.  Action, adventure, heroism, struggles with morality, perfect villains, and a quick wit.    This is an absolutely brilliant book and I so needed a comic like this after reading about five Gotham City Sirens books in a row I wanted to punch myself in the he...

The Keystone-Guards of Arkham 0

Alyce Sinner I would like to despondence some thoughts on the guards deaths.  It really bothered me as well.  Not so much because the writer made you feel for the character just to have him die, but at who did the killing.  Harley is in my top five characters and I don't like this portrayal of her character.     I want to think Harley likes Catwoman and Poison Ivy and I don't like the idea of her turning on them in a crazy whim.  Harley is Harley, the Joker is the Joker.  I am not a fan ...

A Short Story 0

X has entered the building This is a very short comic.  It is an introduction to the new (at the time) Dark Horse character X.  There is almost no story to this book X seems to have super strength among other combat abilities but, he doesn't even speak in the whole comic.  The action was great but when you read more about the character and then look back at this issue, you will realize that he does not posses the strength he shows here like lifting up a man cover with a full grown man in SWAT g...

A Solid Hit 0

One Bad.... Well, this book was a solid hit.  Unfortunately, it did have a flaw.  This is a spoiler coming up so stop reading if you don't want to know.    The issue had everything a comic fan would love.  Great story, tension, action, bad guys dialogue.  The team suffers badly after this fight.  My problem was with the final scene with the Jailbrakers.  The Jailbreakers are this awesome team of villains.  Really great characters but they are left to die in the self destruction of Enclave A (th...

Almost Perfect 0

King Bullet I am surprise this comic did not get reviewed by someone on the vine when it came out.  There have been reviews posted  for every issue up till this one very soon after the comic is released.  This one however has not so, I get to be the first.   The reason I a surprised this book has not been reviewed yet is not just because it is a newer book but it is also by far the best one in the series.  These heroes face some pretty powerful bad guys lead by King Bullet, who have horrific po...

A Good Gamble 0

X Steps into Arcadia The first great and historic issue of the legendary X.....oh wait.  Here is the thing X is a great character who never got his due.  This issue is a wonderful first issue and set up for the character.  As I started reading it I thought that is was going to fall flat as you have a cool costumed hero with a neat gimmick but he ends up going after mafia style villains.  When that happens the hoods usually fall flat and they do here up to the point of the Gambler.  The Gambler ...

The Perfect Woman 0

Doc I love the first story in this Blue Beetle Comic.  It is about a real Doctor around town who tries his own experiment.  This experiment is to create the perfect woman.  How will he do this?  You may ask.  Well, he kidnaps several young woman and plans to cut off or out the best pieces and put them together in a Frankenstein/perfect woman.  As that wasn't crazy enough he just lines the woman up and says things like "I'll keep her torso and her head" and so on.  At least one of them is whippe...

Nine Blue Beetle tales in one book can it get any better? 0

Nine Blue Beetle tales in one book can it get any better?  Well, yes it could be better and the more issues of the Blue Beetle that come out the better they get.  Blue Beetle doesn't really face and super-villains in this issue and that is definitely a weak point.  For the most part the villains he does face a interesting but with nine stories I would have liked to see a super-villain.  Now I know Blue Beetle has a huge rouge gallery so I'm sure they will turn up in later issues.  Gallery ...

Big 3 Gets Better 1

Linda Dale Every issue just gets better.  That said they didn't start that great.  Now this was a really good issue.  All the stories have character and development.  The Blue Beetle takes on the Condor again and the Flame fights the best developed villain I have read.  Although his name is rather lame Mr. Death Mask.  Linda Dale is great as well as a side character to the Flame.  Now in Samson and David we have a little more traditional story but it is way more advanced than it had been.  With ...

Nazis, Nazis, Nazis 1

I hope By July 1941 the United States had not entered World War II but superheroes did.  This is great because up till superheroes fighting Nazis they were fighting Nazi-like dictators and wiping them out in a matter of hours.  This made for some rather dull stories.  Once they started fighting a real life nemesis this had to stop making more elaborate stories and making the heroes a little vulnerable.  This really elevated some heroes.  In this issue Blue Beetle is the only hero who does not a...

Just like every Big 3 comic 1

Dr. Drool Just like every Big 3 comic the Blue Beetle crushes the other stories in character development,m action, story content, art and seemingly every category.  Please just read it for yourself and see.  I can even tell you how to do it for free.  Just PM me.  Someone besides me needs to review a few of these great but lesser known books from the Golden Age.  Anyway Blue Beetle's story is great with a real super-villain who can animate the skeletons of the dead, Both Samson stories are trem...

Don't Mess With Porky Hogg 1

Take that Joan! There is a lot of variety in this older books as they have multiple stories.  The problem is you can have an awesome story like the Blue Beetle and Stardust and have awful ones like the Wing Turner and the Flame.  Let me explain.  First we have the Blue Beetle story that starts out with Joan Mason tied to the end of a Howitzer.  For those of you who don't know Joan is to Blue Beetle what Lois Lane is to Superman.  This story has a good story with an actual villain Porky...

Lacked some pizazz. 1

This just in As in many comics in this era, this book is filled with several stories.  Oddly it is not just Blue Beetle, Samson and the Flame.  There is also a Cosmic Carson and Dr. Doom story.  (Not that Dr. Doom, see link)   The Blue Beetle story was the best story in this book but it was pretty straight forward.  The Samson story was so dull I actually started to fall asleep reading it.  The next was the first of two Flame stories.  Again these were dull and the second one was terrible. ...

The First Ever Blue Beetle 0

Baby Danny is born. The First Blue Beetle comic is something I have wanted to read for about twenty years.  After doing so I have mixed feelings.  You see there is only two new stories to this comic and one is a two page written story not a comic.  The rest of the book is reprinted Blue Beetle and Yarko stories I have already read.  The main story is the Blue Beetle's (Dan Garret's) Origin and it is pretty good.  I love origin stories and this one is good.  Sure by now it is a little formulaic b...

1939 Just Gets Better 0

Awesome Boat This issue picks up were the last series Wonder Comics left off.  This is by far the best book of both series. All the books have about ten big feature stories with about ten more one and two page smaller features.  The smaller features have things like comic strips, and comments about celebrities, sports stars and western heroes, as well as odd things in the world.  They even have a Wonderworld Stamp Collecting page.    All of these smaller features have been dwindled down from the...

Patty O'Day These older comics are impressive.  68 pages without any adds to speak of.  It is like reading 4 or 5 comics today.  It seems like in these issues they would trough everything in these books and see what sticks.  There is every kind of story you can imagine.  The book has a magical hero, Sunday style comics, a new reporter adventure, a detective story, a western, a spy tale, a police drama and a military story.  There are also several one page things ranging from comic strips to bio...

Wonder What Happened To Wonder Man 0

Leaping rolling hills. It is an odd thing reading a comic that was written decades before I was born.  This was pretty odd as it has a big historical connection.  Wonder Man the star of this comic.  Was only even in this one issue.  Not because his story sucked like a lot of these do but because he was too much like Superman.  DC Comics sued Fox Feature Syndicate over this issue and actually won.  I always found this shocking as I didn't think the character looked anything like superman.  That ...

Lowered Expectations 0

I gave the first book in this series five stars but things really dropped in this issue.  It is neat to go back into time and read the stories that are over seventy years old.  The thing about this issue is that it has fifteen stories and they all seem to be the same.  The New Blue BeetleMore than half of these stories dealt with poor stereotypes as evil people.  Especially the Chinese.  I realize it is a different time but even if you forget the the obvious prejudices.  More than half the stori...

The Blue Beetle Stars Here! 1

The Original Blue Beetle This book is over 70 years old and has 64 pages and 15 different stories.  It is also the first appearance of one of my all time favorite characters  The Blue Beetle.  That is right.  Blue Beetle came out the same year as Batman and Superman.  So pick up a book once in a while.    This book is awesome.  You get to see the Green Mask stop criminals using a victrola and records criminals to be used in cort.  That's right a damn victrola.  (Look it up).  Then you have Rex ...

These stories don't exist.....or do they? 1

New Crewman: Bearclaw I love Star Trek.  However I'm not the biggest fan of the original crew.  I only ever watched the show and the films because of my father being a fan.  Now not being the biggest fan does not mean I hated it.  I liked many of the characters like Spock and McCoy and this comic takes place after one of the best Star Trek films ever (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan).  All of these enter into my review of a nearly thirty year old comic.  Star Trek has grown so much and  has bec...

Who? 0

Frank Leslie Yes the first issue of Star Trek's Who's Who.  This is a great comic and when it came out it was highly used and loved by fans of the franchise becuase it answered so many questions.  Like officer's first names that were so often left out of the original series even when they had been in numerous episodes.  It also blended the comics with the films and episodes.  This was great when these were being made but was difficult as each movie changed the comic stories that were written in...

Chow Baby I love it.  When this book came out the episodes it is reflecting were at almost the same time.  I love this.  It is a you might not know but this was happening behind the scenes comic.  Marvel is doing an awesome job with this series and the Star trek: Early Voyages series and it is a damn shame these books are not still in print.  What is really irritating is that this is the state of most comic fans.  Who will buy seven Batman spin-off books a month just because it is part of his...
