Greatest 12 Characters of the Time Lost .

Who is on this list, what this list is about and how they got on the list!

 The Legend Continues
 The Legend Continues

This is one of a set of lists I made showing a progression of the greatest characters in a heroic style throughout time. Focusing for the most part on one decade at a time. The heroes that we know and love today were inspired by heroes before them. Some are even real people who moved into folklore. Before comics there were pulp magazines. Before that there was dime novels and before that was the penny dreadfuls. There were many others as well like Gothic novels, story papers and yes even a real novel.

The List

These are the 12 coolest characters from ancient time that are hard to quantify to a specific date.  They are ancient and biblical characters who will go on to be the biggest influences in comics either directly or indirectly.  In other words these will become great inspirations to future comic characters and stories. Right now they are in order of year.

New Stuff

I was not sure were these lists were to end.  I just let it go naturally and at the end I wanted to have a list of those characters that were so hard to quantify dates for.  There were so many great characters this really could be a list of 100.  These are my favorites but I would love to hear yours.  Let me know.

Here is the next list

Greatest 12 Characters Between 1000-1199

List items

  • Achilles is the Greek Hero of the Trojan War that is believed to have taken place around 1194–1184 BC. Achilles was invulnerable except for his heel. He died from a poison tipped arrow hitting him in the heel.

  • The current Samson is the decedent of the biblical Samson who destroyed a whole army with the Jaw Bone of an Ass. Thus making them Asses. Oh yeah it is in the Bible and it is my favorite biblical story. He was first seen in the book of Judges in the Old Testament in the Bible between 1045 and 1000 BC. Thanks God. =]

  • Job is the sufferer. He suffers in every way. looses everything dear to him and yet he still praises God. If you know real dark and horrible depression you know Job. His first appearance is in The Book of Job written between 600 and 400 BC.

  • Gilgamesh one of the first heroes in literature. Being a true life leader his tales became legend. The oldest surviving text of his story was written on tablets in the 7th Century BC. Now that is bad!

  • The Big Bad Wolf is a villain in many of the old fables like Aesop, Mother goose and the Grimm faerie tales. The first appearance of the Big Bad Wolsf was in the Boy Who Cried Wolf 620 and 560 BC.

  • King Leonidas of Sparta is one of the greatest real life warriors of all time. His Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC is perhaps the most dramatic resistance ever. Vastly outnumbered the Spartans with only 300 men plus a small amount of allies fight an army of several hundred thousand. They eventually loose but stop the army and fight it for two days.

  • Cinderella was originally called Rhodopis. The oldest known tale goes back to somewhere around 64 BC – 24 AD. The story had uniquely made slippers of red and gold. The original story was Egyptian and involved the god Osiris instead of a fairy Godmother.

  • No one knows when Beowulf was first written. It was somewhere between the 8th and 11th century. Beowulf is the title of his first appearance in an English poem.

  • Perseus is a Greek Hero who kills the Medusa to save his love of Andromeda. It is unknown when he first appeared in literature. Medusa's origin changed over time in Greek Mythology. She ended up being depicted as a beautiful woman who is turned into a monster after she mates with Poseidon in the temple of Athena.

  • Hercules like Perseus is a Greek Demi-God. Hercules goes back to ancient Greek mythology. Every comic universe seems to have their own version of this hero.

  • Sinbad the Sailor is so long no one knows when his first story was told or written. He is believed to be a Persian character.

  • Jason is most famously known for his leadership of the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece.
