Young Justice (Original 90's Series)

List items

  • Young, Just Us was started by Robin (Tim Drake), Superboy (Kon-El/Conner Kent), and Impulse (Bart Allen). The name was frequently mispronounced as Young Justice until the boys simply accepted that as their name instead.

They were soon joined by Secret (Greta Heyes), Arrowette (Cissie King-Jones), and Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark). Later they are also joined by Empress (Anita Fite) and Lil'Lobo, who is later replaced by his clone Slobo.

At the end of the series the team disbands. Robin, Superboy, Impulse, and Wonder Girl later join the newly reformed Teen Titans with Cyborg, Starfire, and Beast Boy as their mentors.

  • Young Justice had 56 issues from 1998 to 2003.

  • Tim Drake was stalking both Dick Grayson and Batman and Robin, which lead him to discovering Batman and Robin's secret identities at the age of nine.

After the second Robin, Jason Todd, is murdered by the Joker Tim realizes that Batman needs a Robin after observing his rash behavior while stalking him.

One of his most quoted lines is "I lie to Batman". Like Barbara Gordon, Tim is also smarter than Batman.

Tim trains with Batman for several months before Batman decides that Tim is ready to be Robin, but Tim thinks he still needs more. He convinces Batman to send him to train with the Rahul Lama, but before his training is complete he sees a girl he thinks is being kidnapped and goes after the gang that took her as Robin. He finds them fighting Clyde Rawlins, former military, and jumps in to help. The gang runs away with the girl, and Tim helps Clyde hide away to heal. In return Clyde teaches Tim to fight. However, Lady Shiva was watching the gang in hopes they would lead her to their boss, King Snake. After seeing the fight she follows Tim and Clyde instead, and after watching them for some time shows herself, stating that Tim needs "a woman's touch" in his training. Lady Shiva then trains Tim, and even asks him to kill King Snake in her place and become her protege. Tim refuses and heads back to Gotham, deciding that he's ready to fight at Batman's side.

Through out his time as a vigilante Tim also receives training from Dick Grayson, Cassandra Cain, Nathan Howe, Henri Ducard, and the League of Assassins.

Kon and Bart are his best friends.

  • Superboy is a clone genetically created from material from Superman when he was killed by the creature known as Doomsday. A blood sample from Lex Luthor was used as well, though it would be a long time before he became aware of his human donor's identity. He was created by Project Cadmus to replace Superman following his death and he was artificially aged to mid-teens and implanted with the necessary knowledge of someone of his biological age (in regards to general studies, such as math, reading, etc). Before the experiment could be completed (i.e. aging him to full adulthood and implanting him with safeguards to control him) he was freed by the Newsboy Legion and escaped. One of the boys gave him a leather jacket before he set out into the city.

After Superman's return he became friends with Tim Drake and Bart Allen, and the three founded Young Justice. Superman eventually gave him the Kryptonian name Kon-El and welcomed him into his family.

Kon lived at Cadmus until they got shut down, then lived at the teams HQ Mount Justice for a while, until he became the Super of an apartment complex. However, because he had no secret ID, the complex faced several attacks from super villain, eventually being blown up. Kon decides he shouldn't be living around normal people because he only puts them in danger - refusing to hear everyone's pleas that he made all of their lives better. This, on top of many other things that had happened recently - including the death of Donna Troy and disbanding of both Young Justice and Titans, left Kon not knowing how to move forward. Seeing the state Kon's in, Superman advises him to take a step back and give himself time to relax and think, then offers him the secret ID Conner Kent and a home at the Kent farm in Smallville.

Later Kon becomes Superboy again and joins the new Teen Titans.

  • Bart was born in the late 30th Century, around the time of the Legion of Superheroes, and was the son of Don Allen (the son of Barry Allen, the current and silver age Flash) and Meloni Thawne, the daughter of Professor Zoom. Bart was born with his grandfather’s super speed, which came with serious downfalls. Bart suffered from a hyper-accelerated metabolism, this meant that Bart was aging a lot faster than a normal person and he would die of old age at the age of 12. For example, when he was 2 years old he looked physically 12. To stop Bart from developing mental problems, Bart was placed in a VR (virtual reality) simulator which creates a virtual world that kept pace with his unusually fast growth.

When it became clear that the simulator was not working his grandmother, Iris Allen decided to take Bart into the past (our present) to see her nephew, Wally West, while he was the Flash, in hopes Wally would have a solution to his cousin's problems. Wally made Bart use his super speed at new levels. This extreme burst of speed shocked Bart’s metabolism back to normal.

Because Bart spent most of his childhood in the reality simulator Bart had no concept of danger and would often act before thinking, which led Batman to give him the name Impulse. Bart proved too much to handle for Wally so Wally passed him over to the veteran speedster Max Mercury. Max moved Bart to Manchester, Alabama, where he taught Bart about the Speed Force and how to use his powers responsibly. Batman gave Bart the name Impulse as a warning.

For a time, Impulse came into the possession of a space ship given to him by a rich man in thanks for saving his castle. The team used the ship to reunite Doiby Dickles with his queen and restore the rightful rule of Myrg. Impulse stayed with Young Justice for a long time becoming best friends with Tim Drake and Superboy who he actually stayed with for the majority of his time in the Teen Titans.

  • Over two thousand years ago, the Apokolips warrior known as Rip Roar managed to steal a Super-Cycle from the New Gods and imprinted himself upon the wondrous piece of New Genesis technology, binding it to his service. He proceeded to plunder and cause havoc until he was sabotaged by his rival Kalibak and both he and his mechanical steed were entombed alive on the planet Earth.

In the modern day, a group of archeologists partially unearth the Super-Cycle which accidentally transforms one of them, Nina Dowd into a cat-like female with hypnotic powers. Intoxicated with her new appearance and abilities, she promptly renames herself Mighty Endowed. Despite attempts by Agent Donald Fite and Ishido Maad of A.P.E.S. (All Purpose Enforcement Squad) to prevent them from interfering; Superboy, Robin, and Impulse investigated and freed the Super-Cycle from its tomb.

Immediately, the Super-Cycle attempts to locate Rip Roar and frees him. However, he is far from pleased and enraged at how long it took the Super-Cycle to rescue him. Robin is able to convince the Super-Cycle to abandon it's abusive master and come have adventures and fun with the youthful teenage heroes instead.

Shocked by the rejection of the Super-Cycle, Rip Roar is covered in molten lava and defeated. The trio of heroes immediately adopt the sentient machine.

The Super-Cycle would thus become the primary means of travel for Young Justice, bonding with many of the members (although Superboy was insulted that the Super-Cycle seemed to like Robin the best even after the Teen of Steel had named the machine after himself). Impulse seemed to have a special ability to understand and convince the Super-Cycle to obey his orders but most often, Robin acted as the primary pilot for the living machine.

The Super-Cycle was responsible for initiating several adventures for the group; somehow sensing incidents where their presence was needed such as saving Arrowette from Harm and defeating Despero.

After Robin departed from the group, the Super-Cycle appeared to bond with Slobo. After Slobo's apparent destruction, the Super-Cycle disappeared and has not been seen since.

  • Secret was born Greta Hayes. As a young girl she lived in fear of her older adopted brother Billy. As she became a teenager she became more frightened of him. One day her fears were realized when Billy murdered her by pushing her stereo into the bathtub with her.

This set Greta and Billy on opposite paths. Somehow Greta was transformed into a ghost-like creature soon to be known as Secret and her Brother would strive to be the greatest villain of all times and would take the name Harm.

Eventually, Robin, Impulse and Superboy are asked to help the D.E.O. find Secret. They were asked to help because the D.E.O. feared they wouldn't be able to stop the creature by themselves. They are also told that the creature is a dangerous monster and could kill anyone it came into contact with. The three heroes, wanting to do good, capture Secret with a faulty canister. When they do they find out that it was not really a monster but a girl about their age. Secret told them her story and asked if they could help her. At this she comes out of the canister. When asked why she didn't just leave the canister before she told them that she wanted them to believe her first. They agreed to help her and gave the D.E.O. a fake canister that was suppose to have the creature in it but it was just some smoke. This caused an investigation by the older members of the Justice League who were the "guardians" of the younger heroes. All three of them lied to protect Secret and they made sure their stories were corroborated by each other.

Secret joins Young Justice with Wonder Girl and Arrowette as the first three female members of the group. She was often referred to as Suzie due to the fact that her real name was unknown. Secret became good friends with the two girls and she developed a crush on Robin, and often defends his actions and his leadership without doubts and was jealous of Spoiler, Robin's girlfriend.

Eventually getting her memories back and managing to become human again, Greta retires and begins attending school with Cissie at St. Elias School for Girls.

  • Heroism seems to run in Arrowette's family. Her mother was Miss Arrowette. Her father has never been positively identified, though her mother has claimed that it is Green Arrow. Cissie's childhood was spent preparing for her life's mission: to be a super hero. Arrowette appeared in Impulse #59 as Impulse's date in the Valentine's dance. Her career as an adventurer began in a battle against the Spazz in Manchester, Alabama. Impulse and Max Mercury were on hand to help, but Mercury later pressed child endangerment charges against her mother Bonnie. The charges stuck, and Cissie was remanded to the custody of the Elias School and Dr. Marcy Money. It looked as if Cissie's super hero career was over, but Dr. Money inadvertently gave Cissie the idea that she could be a better hero than her mother. This thought seemed to inspire Cissie to resume her career as Arrowette.

Arrowette joined Young Justice during the team's first conflict with Harm. In that battle, Harm caught one of Cissie's arrows and threw it right back at her, seriously wounding her shoulder. The Super-Cycle rescued her and brought her back to Happy Harbor. The team's care for her prompted her to become a member.

Shortly after, the murder of Dr. Marcy Money turned Arrowette's world inside out. Blinded by rage, she hunted the doctor's murderer, following him and his accomplice into the Pennsylvania woods. After subduing the accomplice, she proceeded to re-enact Dr. Money's murder. But this time, the killer was on the receiving end. He begged for mercy and threw away his weapon. Cissie could have captured him, but instead she fired an arrow directly at his heart. The blow surely would have killed him if Superboy hadn't arrived in the knick of time, snatching the arrow out of the air.

Soon thereafter, Cissie quit Young Justice and has abandoned her Arrowette persona, fearing she may be tempted to kill again and that no one would be there to stop her. Cissie now has to do what her mother never allowed her to do: decide for herself what she is going to be.

After leaving Young Justice she went on to win a gold medal for America in the Olympics for Archery. Although not a member of the team she continued to have close relationships with them, especially her best friend, Wonder Girl. She was with Young Justice as the team's medic during the "Our Worlds At War" Galactic Crisis, and acted as the team's pitcher in an intergalactic baseball game with worlds in the balance.

Cissie now attends St. Elias' School for Girls - along with Greta Hayes (Secret) and Cassie Sandsmark (Wonder Girl). Cissie appeared in Teen Titans #7 (vol.3) negotiating with the principal of St.Elias' school about allowing Wonder Girl to enroll in the school along with Secret.

Young Justice, namely Superboy and Impulse, have been trying to encourage her to get back in the game. The only time she went into costume again is when she helped Wonder Girl, her best friend, when her mother was kidnapped. So, Cissie dressed up as Arrowette to help her friend. She told Robin that it reminded her of old times.

  • Cassandra is the third character at DC Comics to bear the distinction of Wonder Girl and is the present holder of this title. Before her came the golden age stories of Wonder Woman as a teenager and the more famous stories of Donna Troy throughout most of the silver and modern age of comics. Cassandra’s first appearance was before she had received her powers. After the battle alongside Artemis against the White Magician, Diana decided to leave Boston for Gateway City and while there she decided to work at a museum. Her boss was a woman by the name of Helena Sandsmark and Cassandra was her daughter. Cassandra aided Diana in some of her early adventures, but her first real action as a superhero was when she donned the gauntlets of Atlas and winged sandals of Hermes. Soon after she was granted a boon by Zeus who granted her superpowers (though these could be switched on and off by her mother.) It would later be revealed that her father was in fact Zeus, the result of a relationship her mother had had while on an archaeological expedition (though as with most of Zeus dalliances, it is implied that he was disguised.) Soon after her appearance with powers, it was determined that Cassie be indoctrinated in the ways of the amazons and her training began under Artemis.

While assisting the Amazons whenever the opportunity arose, Cassie found herself wandering deeper into the world of superheroes. After being assaulted by the villain Harm, Cassie found herself recruited by Secret to join Young Justice. Initially dismissing her and making fun of her name, Cassie changed her mind when Secret mentioned one of her teammates was Superboy, who Cassie had a crush on and so wanted to meet.

During her tenure with Young Justice, Wonder Girl grew into a full-fledged superhero. She took over leadership of the team when Robin stepped down from the post, all while cultivating a crush on Superboy and close friendship with Secret and Arrowette. It was during this period that Cassie's secret identity was revealed to the public when she was forced to defend her high school against an attack by Wonder Woman's nemesis the Silver Swan who thought that she should be Wonder Girl.

Just as Wonder Girl began settling into her leadership role, the Teen Titans and Young Justice were offered sponsorship by a mysterious corporation called Optitron. While mulling over the pitch, both teams were assaulted by Indigo, a misunderstood android who unwittingly activated a homicidal Superman robot. Donna Troy was killed in the ensuing battle, an incident that left the heroes shattered. Depressed and guilt-ridden over the death of her friend and idol, Cassie contemplated retiring from superheroics.

  • The daughter of Donald Fite, of the All Purpose Enforcement Squad (APES.), and his wife Oshi, Anita Fite was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, just before her parents both finished college. Oshi was the daughter of a powerful "mambo," a priestess of the mystical art of Vodun (more commonly referred to as "voodoo"), and though she had her reservations about Don, her mother allowed Oshi to marry him once it was known that Anita would be born. However, before that time, she convinced Oshi to allow her to perform a ritual that would ask Oya, vodoun goddess of the wind, fire, and thunderbolt (who represented female power and guarded the gates of death), to "sponsor" Anita and serve as her "Gros Bon Ange" (Big Guardian Angel).

When Anita was born, she grew up in her grandmother's home before the Fite family moved to a small apartment along Bourbon Streen in New Orleans. Though she was only five at the time, Anita displayed considerable athletic abilities, able to do a handstand on their apartment's railing two-stories up with no visible effort, something her grandmother chalked up to the influence of Oya. Because of her imperious, somewhat bossy attitude, her mother called her "Empress," and for a time, the Fite's were a happy family.

A few years later, Anita and her father had moved to Happy Harbor, Rhode Island, and Don had become a member of APES, partnered up with Ishido Maad. Anita became a costumed vigilante after watching Cissie dispatch a thief at the local mall. She was inspired by the archer's heroics, and resolved to use her skills and proficiency with the vodoun arts to help others, taking her mother's nickname for her as her costumed alias. She first intervened on Young Justice' behalf when they were framed for defacing Mount Rushmore (the cover for APES' headquarters), after the organization had kidnapped Secret as a favor to the DEO (Department of Extranormal Operations), and later became a full-fledged member of the team after her father and the group made amends. At first, there was tension between Cissie and Anita - Cissie thinking that Anita had simply wanted to replace her in Young Justice - but the girls quickly came to an understanding and became friends, with Cissie having recently given up her career in heroics to pursue a more "normal life" due to personal trauma, and Anita making sure Young Justice still had someone to back them up.

Though she has left her costumed life behind for the most part, Anita has become "Empress" again in recent times, though mostly this has been to aid her friends in times of crisis. During the events of the "Day of Vengeance," she appeared at Stonehenge to help the other magicians and mystical beings who had gathered there to reign in the then hostless Spectre, who was gunning for anyone who had sinned greatly, or who had considerable magical power. In the "One Year Later" saga, she again took up arms alongside the surviving members of Young Justice to help Wonder Girl and the now reformed Hercules battle the forces of Granny Goodness and her Female Furies. As of late, her current activities are unknown, though it can be safely assumed that she is still in "pseudo-retirement."

  • When Young Justice traveled to Apokolips, Lil Lobo was killed by Parademons. Still being (a much smaller) Lobo, Lil Lobo's blood transformed and each drop grew into another Lil Lobo and saved the day before turning on each other. The last clone standing became the real Lobo. Unknown to him, one drop of blood formed into a smaller, weaker clone. This clone knew he was not the strong enough to survive against the other Lobos and hid on Young Justice's space ship to keep himself from being killed.

The clone felt he was weak and did not deserve the name Lobo. He finally shook his depression when his teammate Secret, telling a story said "So Lobo here took it as a challenge." The clone proclaimed that he liked that and would henceforth be named Slobo. He became the team's mechanic and developed a strong bond with Anita. It was heavily implied that the two had romantic feelings for each other.

Unfortunately, Slobo's genetics proved to be problematic and his body began to degrade, causing him to weaken and go blind. Knowing he would die soon, he sacrificed his life to save his teammate, Secret, from Darkseid. Anita was incredibly distraught at Slobo's death, but decided that he would would have much preferred to die in a blaze of glory protecting his friend than slowly and painfully from his illness.

Unfortunately, unbeknownst to Anita, Darkseid's omega beams did not kill him, but transported Slobo's essence into the future, where he became trapped in his own statue in the headquarters of the 853rd century's Young Justice.

  • After his association with the Leymen, Red Tornado shut down. He was put into storage at Mt. Justice, and self reactivated when Young Justice started using the location as their base of operations. He served as a mentor of the group and reconnected to his "humanity." The Young Justice team disbanded after the events of Graduation Day and Red Tornado returned to semi-active status with the Justice League.

  • Years ago, a girl was saved from a war-torn Bialya and the villainous Major Macabre by the Red Tornado and the JLA . Red Tornado later introduced little Traya to his "love" Kathy Sutton , who adopted her, while the Tornado became a father-figure in her life. While under the influence of the villainous Kali Cult , Traya almost killed Kathy who is still hospitalized after falling several stories from her apartment. Recovering from the trauma, Traya currently lives at the Elias School, where her roommate is Cissie King-Jones, formerly known as Arrowette.

  • Lucas Carr was nicknamed "Snapper" for his habit of snapping his fingers when happy. A student at Happy Harbor High, Snapper had just finished spreading lime on the family lawn when all the inhabitants of the town came under the mental control of one of Starro the Conqueror's deputies - except Snapper.

The Flash ( Barry Allen) arrived and defeated the Starro deputy and discovered Snapper's immunity to its powers. Barry took Snapper with him to meet the rest of the Justice League, where Hal Jordan used his power ring to discover that the teenager's hands were covered in lime. Aquaman pointed out that oystermen use lime to kill starfish which prey on oysters. Green Lantern then used lime to coat Starro and destroy him. Snapper was made an honorary JLA member for his help in defeating Starro.

For the next few years, Snapper became known as the JLA's mascot. He often sat out the JLA's adventures, recording them in a book at a later time. He occasionally did help the League during their cases, once becoming the "Joker" to help the team overcome the Royal Flush Gang.

Carr was later among many humans captured by the alien Dominators during the Invasion. The Dominators have captured them to discover how prevalent the "metagene" is in the human species. 50 humans were lined up and blasted by the Dominators guns. With only six humans surviving, including Snapper Carr, who gains the ability to teleport by snapping his fingers.

Snapper and the other five are freed after the Dominators are driven from the earth. The new team, calling themselves the Blasters, have nominated Snapper as their leader, with them shortly after traveling with the Omega Men for awhile. He loses his powers temporarily, driving him to insanity. He may have lost his powers due to keeping his eyes open during transport where he saw an eternity pass in blink of an eye. A green furred cat woman named Churljenkins helps him with his insanity: and a short short romance ensues. He is separated from his team once again, and has his hands severed by the Khunds. L.E.G.I.O.N later rescues him, restoring his hands, and returning him to Earth, however Snapper is left unsure of the location of the other Blasters.

Snapper Carr was also a member of Young Justice for a time until the team split up and formed the new Teen Titans. Snapper Carr was a valued member in Young Justice and ended up helping them as well as the JLA.

  • The Ray become a reserve member of the league and then later joins Young Justice just to have them disband shortly after.
