Top 25 Marvel Villains

My personal top 25 from the Marvel comics' rogues galleries.

List items

  • To me he is the final boss of the X-Men. Thousands of years old survivalist who can't stand weakness of any kind. He has a tragic past but, unlike some other X-Men villains, he doesn't beg for sympathy. He's hardcore.

  • Superior Spider-Man aside, this guy did a lot more than just that. Killed Captain Stacy, formed Sinister Six, had Black Cat shot multiple times, cured Spidey from a deadly illness just to flaunt it to his face. He was an underappreciated nerd who got great power but took no responsibility. Spider-Man's dark reflection.

  • Classy and charismatic, ruthless and egotistic, a dictator, tyrant, scientist and sorcerer all wrapped up in a cool design. In a weird way he is both the ultimate bad guy and the underdog of Marvel.

  • He may have started as a racist Fu Manchu stereotype, but Mandarin has managed to maintain his position as the Iron Man archenemy. Potentially great villain who is hard to adapt, as Iron Man 3 has proven.

  • He wants to take over the world because it's a challenge. Not a motive you usually get from these people. And he's a time traveler and a genius so if he is foiled he can just try again. In fact he did take over the world in "Kang Dynasty". Quite possibly the final boss for Avengers.

  • Sometimes a villain doesn't need to be overly complex. Just give him scary looks and make him unable to feel anything but hatred. Long after the WW2 Red Skull continues to terrorize Marvel world.

  • Jealous brother, trickster god and manipulator, Loki is one of the great ones. Though his popularity has risen thanks to the movies, I always liked Loki more as a guy pulling the strings behind the scenes, like in "Acts of Vengeance". Also him screwing with Norman Osborn's mind was one of the better things in "Dark Reign"/"Siege".

  • A classic example of a mad scientist who lets his hunger for knowledge eat away anything good and humane in him. Sinister belongs to the same club with Dr. Moreau and Herbert West.

  • Son of the man who "killed" Bucky, Zemo is often the leader of the Masters of Evil and is determined to take down Captain America. Also, he destroyed the only picture Captain had of his mother. What a jerk.

  • A flaming head dark warlock from another dimension. Has died a few times but like a good comic book villain keeps coming back. Likes to make Doctor Strange's life difficult. Has hard time with family members.

  • President of the "Wolverine sucks" club. A monster who embraces his animal side and likes to torment his victims psychologically before brutally killing them. Lovely.

  • Professor Moriarty of the Marvel world. A criminal mastermind who stays beneath the radar of Avengers, and is competent enough to take on street level heroes. Rules New York like a boss.

  • One of the very few evil robots to really make his mark, along with Hal-9000. Ultron keeps constantly upgrading himself to become better at killing people. He also has daddy issues.

  • Cletus Kasady version. Carnage is not a villain to be used too often as he gets old really fast, but when used right he makes a memorable monster. His life views are very simple: "screw the rules" and "let's kill people" are all he needs.

  • An evil space insect tyrant with a nightmarish design who wants to snuff life out of the universe. He rocked as the main villain in "Annihilation".

  • A fashion designer who perfected Osborn's Goblin formula, kept both Spidey and readers in the dark of who he really was for years, and was after only one thing: money. Very simple, yet it works. As someone at deviantart once said: Kingsley rules, Osborn drools.

  • The Mad Titan who snapped half the life in universe away. Had his last hurrah, as far as I'm concerned, in "Annihilation".

  • Much like Harry Osborn and Loki, Stryfe has family issues. Well that's what you get when you think your parents abandoned you to be raised by an evil mutant who only wanted to possess your body. The extreme 90s look aside, I think Stryfe was a fascinating villain and "X-Cutioner's Song" is a great story.

  • Unlike most Thor villains Amora can't be defeated with simply swinging a hammer. A powerful sorceress who really doesn't handle rejection well.

  • My favorite Hulk villain. Superior brain to oppose superior strength.

  • Lovecraftian cosmic cancer. Defeat will have a high price tag.

  • At least he is not some moping brat, unlike some other devils I could name.

  • A vampire-mutant-witch with a God complex and extreme fear of death.

  • A space dragon. Doesn't get more comic book than that.

  • This old timer can work great as both a sympathetic antagonist and a vicious monster.
