well usually in real life selflessness and the concern for others comes out a trauma or tragedy. Think of parents who lose their child to drunk driving or a parent who loses their child to suicide, they pretty much dedicate their lives to bringing awareness of these issues. It serves as therapy but because they know that pain they dont want anyone else to experience it. Thats pretty selfless and I think thats what the batman character stands for. His initial reason for being batman probably did start because of the need for vengeance but I dont think thats what drives him anymore. It's to prevent what happened to him from happening to anyone else. Its also to prevent people from being consumed with anger like he was hence the adoption of dick grayson and the other robins. I think the last scene in Batman Begins when Gordon says I never thanked you and Batman turns and replies "and you'll never have to" really encompasses the whole nature of his character. He doesnt expect anything from saving people and it isnt something he's obligated to do. Yes, he is pretty obsessive but, the way batman who's not super human puts his life on the line for others demonstrates his extreme selflessness.
