Character Origins and History

Tyrant was the first of many creations by Galactus. In fact, he is so ancient that his birth was around the time that Galactus first felt his hunger. However, an important distinction to make from Tyrant and say the Silver Surfer is that Tyrant is not a herald of Galactus. Tyrant is not a mortal that Galactus imbued with the power cosmic, but rather a machine constructed by Galactus and imbued with great power. As a result of this, Tyrant is far more powerful then any herald and remains one of the greatest mistakes Galactus has ever made. Instead of helping Galactus or providing companionship, Tyrant became a dictator on a galactic scale. The spinsterhood, a group of special female warriors, formed to defeat him, but in the end it was Galactus who forced Tyrant from power and into exile, leaving him weakened. This was kept secret and Tyrant was forgotten to near all the universe, until he was ready to re-emerge from hiding. Tyrant kidnapped multiple characters to power his ship, one of whom was Galactus's current herald. This put Tyrant yet again in confrontation with Galactus. Realizing that confrontation was positive for neither, Galactus left Tyrant his herald, Morg, but forced Tyrant to release the rest of his prisoners.

Tyrant next encountered a group of fighters led by Thanos who wanted to face Tyrant for knowledge and just for a challenge. Fending off the group, it was revealed to the last of the living spinsterhood that her group had nothing to do with Tyrant's defeat and that instead he was bested by Galactus. Tyrant could not defeat his enemies before they escaped and Morg was released from Tyrant to once again serve Galactus.

Later Tyrant decided that it was time to confront Galactus. Sending his messenger for word of his coming, Tyrant came to Galactus's world ship with the intent to kill the devourer. Tyrant fought Galactus until Morg used the Universal Nullifier, a weapon capable of destroying the universe, to destroy Tyrant's legs and ultimately in Morg's failure to control it, kill Tyrant, himself, and seemingly Galactus.

Powers and Abilities

  • Superhuman Strength - Easily able to one-shot high tier characters
  • Superhuman Durability - Capable of no-selling blasts/hits from High/Herald tier characters
  • Superhuman Speed - Capable of reacting to bullrushes from very fast high tier characters
  • Technomorphing - Able to manipulate even Galactus's tech
  • Energy blasts - Able to one-shot high heralds and hurt durable teambusters
  • Eye Beams - Able to almost one-shot high tiers
  • Body Manipulation - Able to manipulate his body to turn himself into a weapon

A True Teambuster

Naturally as such an impressive creature, Tyrant has multiple showings that put him on the Transcendent/Teambuster tier along with characters like Thanos, Amazo, Larfleeze and others. Tyrant particularly excells in raw power compared to other more haxy teambusters.

Silver Surfer vol 3 #82 vs Pseudo Annihilators

In this encounter, Tyrant found himself matched with a team similar to the Annihilators, however the ones he fought directly were Beta Ray Bill, Gladiator, and Silver Surfer.

Some impressive showings to take away from this teambusting showing is him no-selling a stormbreaker throw from Beta Ray Bill, no-selling an energy blast from a pissed off Silver Surfer, one-shotting Beta Ray Bill with a punch and one-shotting Silver Surfer with an energy blast. Along with this we get some of Tyrant's best speed showings like reacting to and tagging Bill out of his bullrush as well as possibly reacting to Gladiator's heat vision. All of which are very impressive showings for his raw stats. Now, what makes this showing more impressive is that later in Cosmic Powers #1 it was established that Tyrant easily overcame this threat

Of course this does reference a few other characters who were overcome through in fighting and Tyrant's fodder, but overall a great showing for him.

Silver Surfer vol 3 #82 Scaring off Galactus

Now this showing is more implied power then anything else, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Here, Tyrant is able to force Galactus into a bargain and force him to admit that a confrontation would be unwise, meaning Tyrant could fight Galactus well or at the very least give him trouble enough to want to avoid confrontation.

Not a clear cut feat, but a very obvious portrayal of his power

Cosmic Powers #6 vs Cosmic Team

In this showing Tyrant goes up against a (far) less powerful team, however he still dismantles it in no short order and proves once again that he is no minimal threat

Some major things to take away from this is Tyrant no-selling and one-shotting the High Tier Legacy, tanking Terrax's axe at a time where Terrax actually wasn't a massive jobber, and then proceeding to KO him, and ragdolling/smacking around Jack of Hearts and Terrax. Not quite on the level of his previous showing, but still pretty solid.

Cosmic Powers #6 vs Amped Thanos

Now what makes Cosmic Powers #6 such an impressive showing for Tyrant is that even after teambusting the team above, he was able to fight an amped Thanos equally, even forcing him to retreat.

Some major things to take away from this fight is how Tyrant is able to tank basically everything thrown at him from an amped Thanos and at the end come out much better then him, but the far more impressive thing is that Tyrant was able to repeatedly hurt Thanos, who is very well known for his durability. Even within the "teambuster" tier, Thanos is exceptional for his durability yet Tyrant was able to hurt him multiple times, though not do any lasting damage. Of course, he also did this after teambusting the team above.

Silver Surfer #108 vs Galactus

Now this isn't a fight as much as some miscellaneous showings stuck together to form a small fight. All of which are pretty nice/interesting.

Silver Surfer #105 for the First Scan, Next two are 108

Here in the first scan we learn that Tyrant is powered by the biospheric energies Galactus feeds off of so Tyrant gets weaker the more Galactus feeds, meaning he was going into this fight weaker then the ones above.

In the second scan, Tyrant initially tanks a blast from a pissed off Galactus and only after tanking it is able to absorb it due to it being from biospheric energies, the same energies Tyrant feeds off of.

The Third scan shows Tyrant being able to cut freaking Galactus, which should be impressive for obvious reasons. Overall, for a fight with Galactus, surprisingly not as impressive as his previous fights, but not bad overall.

Miscellaneous abilities.

These don't really fit with any fight, but I would say it's more a demonstration of a few of Tyrant's loan feats and his versatility/hax.

  • Scan 1: Tyrant easily one-shots Silver Surfer(Silver Surfer vol 3 #81)
  • Scan 2: Tyrant no-sells a full blast from Jack of Hearts and one-shots him(Silver Surfer vol 3 #82)
  • Scan 3: Tyrant completely no-sells a blast from Silver Surfer(Silver Surfer vol 3 #82)
  • Scan 4/5: Tyrant shows the ability to manipulate his body into any form, resist draining from Galactus's tech, and technomorph that tech(Silver Surfer vol 3 #108)

Technology

Now, being an evil, dictator, conqueror, etc. Tyrant has a great collection of random technology to use. Of course, with all of these, keep in mind that Tyrant does have techno-morphing so he can make this stuff on the fly as well.

General Tech

Some Miscellaneous devices that Tyrant has built, created, used, etc.

  • Scan 1-2: After draining him, Tyrant restores the power cosmic to Morg and makes him fight under his control. This is not telepathy, but rather technopathic control comparable to a virus(Cosmic Powers #5)
  • Scan 3: Uses technology to torture Morg(Cosmic Powers #5)
  • Scan 4-6: Has a large prison draining device capable of holding and draining the likes of Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill, Morg, and Gladiator, among others(Silver Surfer vol 3 #81)

Overall, some pretty useful stuff. Not all of it is combat applicable, but it's solid.

Fodder

Tyrant's fodder isn't particularly durable and we aren't given a specific number as to how much there is, but there is a lot. Easily a couple hundred I would say. While they might not have the best durability, they certainly pack a punch.

  • Scan 1-2: Tyrant's fodder one-shot Gladiator and Beta Ray Bill(Silver Surfer #79)
  • Scan 3-4: Tyrant's fodder 2-shots Morg and Terrax(Silver Surfer #80)

So they are cable of dishing out very powerful attacks, enough to one-shot high tiers and significantly hurt those above.

Fortress

Along with an army and some random tech, what good would a Tyrant be without a massive homebase to do his evil deeds. Luckily Tyrant is no exception and he has one of the greatest of all, the fortress

No Caption Provided

Now, Tyrant doesn't exactly do a whole lot with his base, but we do learn that it is massive size compared to other more meager bases.

Silver Surfer vol 3 #81 & Secret Wars #8

In the first scan, Surfer compares the Fortress in size to Galactus's world ship, which in reference has been said to be the size of a solar system. So it's absolutely massive. Inside isn't a whole lot beyond just the tech shown earlier and some more fodder, but a impressive base nonetheless.

Full Power

Along with Tyrant's weaker and "Depowered" version shown above, a long time ago, Tyrant was at full power in which case he was an incredibly powerful being. He only has 1 showing at this level, but it's damn impressive

Cosmic Powers #6

In the first 3 scans we see Tyrant fighting with Galactus. Galactus presumably was fed for this encounter as he wouldn't engage with such a powerful opponent unless being fed. While Tyrant was defeated by Galactus, it's still crazy to fight nearly equally with an abstract level being and later it's stated that galaxies were destroyed in Galactus's and Tyrant's conflict.

Summary

Overall, Tyrant is deserving of the teambuster name. He may not have a ton of hax and versatility, but not only are the ones he has such as technomorphing and energy blasts impressive, but he also has tons of raw power. Very few characters can go up against a team of powerhouses like Gladiator, Beta Ray Bill, and Surfer and no-sell everything and proceed to 1-2 shot the entire team. Then his showing against an amped Thanos further solidifies that he is on that level. Even past that, Tyrant isn't just a brute, he has tons of tech and armies that he can make during prep and bring to the battle. Overall, Tyrant can't always defeat opponents with tons of hax due to showing few resistances to it beyond draining, but he can certainly overpower characters and teams that just rely on brute force through raw power.
