Are Comics Dying?

Are Comics Dying?

No Caption Provided

"Comics are dying." This is something for this site, and most pop culture sites, has stated time and again for a few years now. Comics are dying. However, comic books been around for ages—over 100 years now. They boomed in popularity around 80s, started crashing in the 90s, got popular again in 2000s, and from 2010s to now being declared dead as Manga top the charts in the sales area of “drawings with words to them.” Well, allow me a different point of view.

No Caption Provided

To start let’s really look at the proof Comics are dying. Most sources point to the sales figures of Marvel and DC. The big two. Yes, those areas of industry are getting wrecked in both sales and criticism. They are compared to garbage from a story perspective, victims of cheap gimmicks via multiple big events, and impose the steady re-issue number #1 trick for sales. Another major deal is Comic shops have started to shut down thanks to Covid. That is a major blow for comic readers who purchase physical issues. Collections of comics also suffer since the 90s as most comics have been printed in high numbers and are considered not old enough to be of value. This is all true, but is it the whole picture for the Comics industry?

No Caption Provided

One major thing people forget about is Indie comics. Comic companies like Image, IDW, Dark Horse, Dynamite, and Boom have really started to blossom. Sure they are nowhere near DC or Marvel in sales, but they are getting recognized more and more by the community. Some of these companies’ IP have hit movies, films, games, and other forms of media, like Invincible, Hellboy, The Boys, The Crow, Walking Dead, The Mask, Sin City, TMNT, Kick Ass, Spawn (HBO not the horrible movie lol) and many many more! These smaller comic companies did well for themselves, I would say. There was a time when Spawn beat Superman and Spider Man in actual sales. That happened in the 90s. Even in today’s post-Covid world these smaller comic companies are making decent money. They also make comics of established IPs like The Shadow, Transformers, GI Joe, Godzilla, Aliens, Predator, etc. with great success. They are doing alright.

No Caption Provided

Another major thing many people point to is the decline of physical comics. As in ink on paper drawings with story added to it. The definition of a comic "book." Yes, Comic Books are not as big or plentiful as they once were for Marvel or DC in the world today. However, Marvel and DC don't need Comic "books" anymore. They are in a phase of transformation. Their IPs always did well in cartoons in the 80s and 90s. Now with today's CGI we get insane good "comic" stories in the form of animation, films, and movies. Look at just how big CW Arrow shows were. Marvels MCU is the greatest still franchise in Hollywood. Even Sony cashing in on Spider Man IP. DC makes killer cartoons as well, like Young Justice and Teen Titans. DC animated films like Killing Joke and Red Son are great. Spectacular Spider Man anyone? Fox's X-Men IP ran a good run as well before Disney merger. Even the Injustice video game was serious E-Sport until recently. Think about how all this made bank for Marvel and DC, and not once in the form of a comic "book." In a way comics have transformed into other mediums of entertainment. Films, Games, etc. They are doing great pop culture-wise, and left a much larger imprint than the comic books ever had. Comic books have transcended after 100 years of being on paper.

No Caption Provided

The last thing I should mention is Manga. The ole dreaded Comics vs Manga. Even years back this Comics vs Manga thing never jived with me. A Manga is in all seriousness simply an eastern style of comic. It has tropes that are different. You read it right to left, it’s black and white most of the time, and often there is major power increasing over 9000 tropes lol. Still, in the end, it’s an eastern comic. Ink on paper that tells a story. I never understood why Comics and Manga camps cannot get along. If Manga is selling super well, it’s good for the "comic" business. It means the art of good stories told through drawings and dialogue boxes is not dead!

No Caption Provided

I think I rambled on long enough, but next time you hear others, or think to yourself, that comics are dead or dying, just try to look at the bigger picture. Comic-based IPs are making insane waves in pop culture through TV screens. Manga and smaller Indie Comics have seen an increase in business alongside the decline of Comic "Books" from Marvel and DC. Our passion is not dead. It’s just different than the old days. Sure for some of us change sucks, but the bright side is future generations are more than likely to enjoy the art of storytelling through ink on paper, or through the films, and enjoy the comic characters we grew up with.

This is a good blog, but I dont think comics are dying by any means if anything boosted by marvel's success and we have marvel to somewhat thank for it, yet I think comic SITES are declining due to the lack of care for them. Good blog though @kaijuking!

I don't think comics are dying, but are more likely transitioning more away from superhero and physical copies.

I don't think comics are dying either; I think, if anything, they’ve put a magnifying glass on the medium as a whole. Loved this blog.

I agree w/ basically all of this. I think sequential images on paper to tell a story are fine and healthy, as an industry. The Big 2 may be suffering, but their IP's make up for it elsewhere and those comics need to exist. Licensed comics are always helpful, too. But yes, indies, manga, digital... Comics are fine, just the industry is evolving.

As u pointed in the blog.

The fans have seen to caught up and arent buying into the #1 fad that big comic companies keep doing.

Another advantage is Indies are able to do what they want with brand new characters.

the big companies and their stories are just falling in quality recently like beyond the white knight has been the only decent comic i have read of DC since death of the family in 2012 and for marvel i guess it was inmortal hulk most of their other stuff really sucks

Indies and Manga on the other hand has really been on the verge of becoming more adecuate to older audiences and what not

Need to look at a static charts

Comics and graphic novel sales topped $1.2 billion in 2019, according to a new joint estimate by Comichron's John Jackson Miller and ICv2's Milton Griepp. Total comics and graphic novel sales to consumers in the U.S. and Canada were approximately $1.21 billion in 2019, an 11% increase over sales in 2018.

Good blog. You raise a lot of good points. I think the industry will do just fine and more media adaptations will continue to get people into comics. I started reading Invincible after watching the show. I have friends who started reading comics after watching so many CBMs that they wanted to get into comics and asked me for recommendations. On a statistical level, the industry is doing well. Here are the 2021 sales according to Comichron.

That's part of the reason I think the industry should just move to Graphic Novels/Trades. Those sell much better than issues. They're also more accessible.

DC sucks

@phisigmatau: Same. I always look for the trades because it's guaranteed to have all the issues to compose a story. With issues, it's not a guarantee that I'll find the individual issues for a story arc. I might have to go that route to get the remainder of GI Joe Reloaded because the Acts of Treason TPB seems to have never been made which stinks, and IDW never made TPBs for the Reloaded stuff just Marvel and DDP's ARAH comics.

Also, public libraries and standard book stores such as Barnes & Nobles only carry trade paperbacks and graphic novels.

@phisigmatau: yeah. They could easily squander the potential you do not know it. That's one gripe I have about someone like Larry Hama, is that he's a come up with it as he goes writer/artist instead of someone who plans ahead. He's a good writer and all I just prefer it if he plans his stories ahead.

@spawnoftoilet: To start with, obviously what is meant by “comics” doesn’t include mange etc. Those might technically be similar/same things but what is dying is the nerd interest in consuming comic universes and debating them. Saying “manga are comics” as a counter doesn’t work because I don’t care about anything manga related. Don’t much care for the sales stats either, I never see legit comic book threads here anymore with scans and discussions.

Secondly, it seems like you and many others here are unclear on the definition of a comic book. A comic book movie (cbm) is most definitely NOT a comic book. The success of (or popularity on the Vine of) DCEU/MCU/the Boys etc are irrelevant OR even detrimental to the relevance/success of comic books.

Sure, movies might boost sales to some degree but they also cause the oversimplification of comics and the marketing gimmicks that we all seem to hate. Success of movies means that for so many people, movies have overshadowed actual written books as the main mode of storytelling for the characters we like.

Of course Marvel and DC are thriving, but this doesn’t change the fact that comics are dying.

Comic books are absolutely dying, and have been for years

  • looking at sales figures is inaccurate since they include graphic novels and comics have gotten more expensive
  • even if the indie scene is still doing good, it's not really growing. stagnation is not good
  • overall interest is not what it used to be if you look at things like google searches, social media etc.
  • most storylines and characters have become dull, predictable, boring you name it
  • you mentioned Covid affected sales. No, if anything it should've boosted sales since people were home so much and had more free time for shit like reading.

last but not least, I wanna address the movies argument.

"Comics have transcended paper, it's not longer just about ink on a paper, cartoons and blockbusters generate a lot of revenue and are doing great pop-culture wise"

I really don't get this argument

Games, movies, cartoons, TV shows. Those should not replace the comics. they should boost their sales.

Look at how much things like the anime adaptation or movies can influence the sales of a manga. If the anime is well done and well received, people will go and pick-up the manga (demon slayer sold like 80mil copies in a year like Jesus).

People don't go to pick up comic books after they watch an MCU movie or a DC cartoon or play Injustice.

when was the last time a marvel run or a DC crisis sold millions after a nice movie or something.

people are simply not interested in buying comic books anymore.

@xebec: @rabumalal: meh your not wrong. On the actual comic books which is why my perspective is more than the western magazine with artwork and dialogues boxes printed every month. That specific is dying as a medium. Not the IP and characters and telling stories through art work collected on pages mediums. Thats not dying at all. Which I said all in my oponion piece.😏

Well done!

For me, and my money, the larger question is: are comics relevant. I'm sure in one form or another comics will continue to publish. It's been a very long time since I was considered a prime target comic book reader. My boys play video games - so they are not really a prime target comic book reader... even factoring in tie-ins like Avatar: The Last Air Bender.

My wife and kids enjoy a good Marvel film, but that's not incentive to go into a comic book store. As much a fan as she is of the films, my wife enjoyed Shang-Chi, but not Dr. Strange 2 - and only Hawkeye on Disney+. She pretty much reached "closure" on the MCU with the ending of Endgame.

I believe it was Steven Grant who said something along the lines that all the important, pivotal, great, landmark comic book stories have been told. What we may be seeing now is more fan fiction...

Your mileage may vary...

Graphic novels are a form of comic books, including them in the statistics doesn't make the statistics inaccurate. It just means the graphic novel format of comic reading is the preferred reading format as opposed to collecting individual issues. In fact, when one breaks down the statistics it includes the graphic novel vs. issue sales and see how much revenue the industry makes from those formats. The industry has made 1.47 billion off of comics in the graphic novel format vs. 435 million off of the comic issue format. The industry isn't dying at all.
