Are Comics Dying?

Are Comics Dying?

No Caption Provided

"Comics are dying." This is something for this site, and most pop culture sites, has stated time and again for a few years now. Comics are dying. However, comic books been around for ages—over 100 years now. They boomed in popularity around 80s, started crashing in the 90s, got popular again in 2000s, and from 2010s to now being declared dead as Manga top the charts in the sales area of “drawings with words to them.” Well, allow me a different point of view.

To start let’s really look at the proof Comics are dying. Most sources point to the sales figures of Marvel and DC. The big two. Yes, those areas of industry are getting wrecked in both sales and criticism. They are compared to garbage from a story perspective, victims of cheap gimmicks via multiple big events, and impose the steady re-issue number #1 trick for sales. Another major deal is Comic shops have started to shut down thanks to Covid. That is a major blow for comic readers who purchase physical issues. Collections of comics also suffer since the 90s as most comics have been printed in high numbers and are considered not old enough to be of value. This is all true, but is it the whole picture for the Comics industry?

One major thing people forget about is Indie comics. Comic companies like Image, IDW, Dark Horse, Dynamite, and Boom have really started to blossom. Sure they are nowhere near DC or Marvel in sales, but they are getting recognized more and more by the community. Some of these companies’ IP have hit movies, films, games, and other forms of media, like Invincible, Hellboy, The Boys, The Crow, Walking Dead, The Mask, Sin City, TMNT, Kick Ass, Spawn (HBO not the horrible movie lol) and many many more! These smaller comic companies did well for themselves, I would say. There was a time when Spawn beat Superman and Spider Man in actual sales. That happened in the 90s. Even in today’s post-Covid world these smaller comic companies are making decent money. They also make comics of established IPs like The Shadow, Transformers, GI Joe, Godzilla, Aliens, Predator, etc. with great success. They are doing alright.

Another major thing many people point to is the decline of physical comics. As in ink on paper drawings with story added to it. The definition of a comic "book." Yes, Comic Books are not as big or plentiful as they once were for Marvel or DC in the world today. However, Marvel and DC don't need Comic "books" anymore. They are in a phase of transformation. Their IPs always did well in cartoons in the 80s and 90s. Now with today's CGI we get insane good "comic" stories in the form of animation, films, and movies. Look at just how big CW Arrow shows were. Marvels MCU is the greatest still franchise in Hollywood. Even Sony cashing in on Spider Man IP. DC makes killer cartoons as well, like Young Justice and Teen Titans. DC animated films like Killing Joke and Red Son are great. Spectacular Spider Man anyone? Fox's X-Men IP ran a good run as well before Disney merger. Even the Injustice video game was serious E-Sport until recently. Think about how all this made bank for Marvel and DC, and not once in the form of a comic "book." In a way comics have transformed into other mediums of entertainment. Films, Games, etc. They are doing great pop culture-wise, and left a much larger imprint than the comic books ever had. Comic books have transcended after 100 years of being on paper.

The last thing I should mention is Manga. The ole dreaded Comics vs Manga. Even years back this Comics vs Manga thing never jived with me. A Manga is in all seriousness simply an eastern style of comic. It has tropes that are different. You read it right to left, it’s black and white most of the time, and often there is major power increasing over 9000 tropes lol. Still, in the end, it’s an eastern comic. Ink on paper that tells a story. I never understood why Comics and Manga camps cannot get along. If Manga is selling super well, it’s good for the "comic" business. It means the art of good stories told through drawings and dialogue boxes is not dead!

I think I rambled on long enough, but next time you hear others, or think to yourself, that comics are dead or dying, just try to look at the bigger picture. Comic-based IPs are making insane waves in pop culture through TV screens. Manga and smaller Indie Comics have seen an increase in business alongside the decline of Comic "Books" from Marvel and DC. Our passion is not dead. It’s just different than the old days. Sure for some of us change sucks, but the bright side is future generations are more than likely to enjoy the art of storytelling through ink on paper, or through the films, and enjoy the comic characters we grew up with.

All Godzilla Movies Ranked By KaijuKing

No Caption Provided

This is my list of all live action Godzilla movies ranked from best to worst. How do I rank these films exactly? Base on my personal history with them, and importance to GZ history. Some GZ fan list will look very different than mine, but I will give a run down for each film as well to sell my decision.

33) All Monsters Attack (Godzilla Revenge)

To start with the worst GZ film of all, Godzilla Revenge (as it is known in the US) is a movie thats worst than a spit in the face, but also a dream by a crazy fat kid meaning none of it happen. Its a waste of time. Its also the one GZ film made mostly of stock footage. Just cheap and lazy.

32) Godzilla Raids Again

This film is the second movie ever made for Godzilla, it should be historic right? It has the first Kaiju vs Kaiju fight, and first time seeing Anguirus. Yet this movie sucks. Its boring, campy, and the ending is just laughable bad. Even the monster battle was lame. Didnt like it, hard to rewatch.

31) Ebirah, Horror of the Deep

Ah yes, Godzilla vs the giant lobster. I mean were they trying at all here? This movie also portrays Godzilla as a woman chaser like Kong. Mothra is also in this film.... barely. Only saving grace of this film is the badguy is memorable and fun.

30) Son of Godzilla

This movie actually holds a place in my heart. I watched it alot as a kid. I never understood the horny men wanting the jungle girl, or the weather balloon science angle, but it had scary mantis monsters to my young child imagination at the time. In retrospect it does not hold up. The Kumonga, and Kamacuras are long standing Kaiju, but are uninspired. Giant Spider, Giant Mantis. Meh.

39) King Kong vs. Godzilla

Yes some may be shock how low this is on the list, but people, this is a terrible film. Historic film yes, but poorly executed. The suits were falling apart. Kong needed Frankenstein powers from older scripts to stand a chance. Also the fact Kong won always irked me as a GZ fan. Saving grace is the goofy actors having fun with this.

28) Godzilla vs. Gigan

This is the first time we see one of my fav Kaiju Gigan. This also has other favs of mine in Ghidorah and Anguirus. But man the plot is rough. The aliens in it are silly. The plan to beat GZ is laughable. Its bad, but has great and long ass Kaiju on Kaiju action. A major plus.

27) Destroy All Monsters

Another highly rated classic on the shit bottom for my list. Whats wrong with this film? It has all the Kaiju tearing shit up, and fighting Ghidorah like a end boss. What can go wrong? Its soooooo boring. The first 2/3s is garbage boring. Only last 3rd is action pack. Not a fan.

26) Godzilla 2000: Millennium

This movie rates higher than others, but why? Its kind of fun, and kinda corny. This movie to me is the very definition of a average GZ film.

25) Godzilla vs. Megaguirus

This movie is also same boat as GZ 2000. Its very average. Meh plot, meh characters, corny. The reason I rate it higher is the action is more over the top, and that infamous Blackhole feat.

24) Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla

I was not huge fan of this one. Suffers from convoluted plot holes, and empty plot strands that lead to nowhere. The only cool thing about the film is the action is good, real good, when it happens.

23) Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah

I was torn on this one. I really liked it as a kid, and watched it alot. However, it has its many issues. The Time Traveling plot was terrible full of nonsense and holes. Ghidorah was stiff and boring in battle. The mecha versions also boring in the fight. We even get a knock off Terminator. The good thing is the film is fun overall if you just turn your brain off.

22)Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla

This film rated low right? I mean its Spacegodzilla! I LOVE Spacegodzilla. Too bad the movie is just full of empty plot threads that lead nowhere, and the final battle while entertaining, is soooooo long I fell asleep half the time. Thats bad. When I stay awake, its a fun movie.

21) Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

Again this movie seems so low rated. I mean its DESTOROYAH! Godzilla dies in this film. Burning Godzilla!!! But like Spacegodzilla, I fall asleep last half the movie with the action going on. Its just the action takes so long to happen, and when it does it drags so long. Still the movie is great and historic so I rate higher than others.

20) Shin Godzilla

I understand why people like this movie. Its different. Why I rate it so low? Lack of Godzilla, and when he is on screen half the time in a ugly silly looking form before reaching his final form. Too much talk, not nearly enough action.

29) Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)

This is a really good Godzilla film, by Godzilla standards. However, again with me I didnt find the action that great in it. Only so much a giant moth suit can do. Not much else to say.

18) Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.

I like this sequel better than the first part that was Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. The action is smoother, and the plot more straight forward. Mothra was also in this, and did alot. So overall fun.

17) Godzilla (2014)

Now this movie is far from a masterpiece. We get shitty main star actor, and not nearly enough action. The cock tease fights break away as soon they start. Godzilla is not even in this movie that much. So what saves it? The epic destruction shots are done well. The MUTOs were neat Kaiju and had plenty screen time. The Monster fight at the end was enjoyable. Also the first half with Cranston was great. Overall pretty enjoyable.

16) Godzilla vs. Megalon

I love this movie. Its a terrible film. Nonsensical. Schloky as hell. Yet I enjoy it. Megalon and Gigan are the perfect villain couple since Home Alone's Wet Bandits. Also I like Jet Jaguar and Godzilla battling with silly moves and wrestling tag team shenanigans.

15) Godzilla vs. Hedorah

This movie is underrated. While aimed at kids overall, with blunt environmental messaging, it still has a sense of dread, and grotesque horror to it. It also has one of the few Godzilla bad guys that beat Godzilla. Hedorah is just a perfect counter to GZ and needed human intervention to save GZ.

14) Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla

Ah yes the first Mechagodzilla movie, with King Cesar and Anguirus. Its a fun movie overall, and the battles are great. A solid entry and a must watch.

13) Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack

Honestly Im not sure why I rate this movie so high in hind sight. I feel this movie is only slightly enjoyable to me overall, but its a classic movie all ready. It has a evil and very brutal form of Godzilla smashing aside the likes of Baragon, Mothra, and even Ghidorah. The action is not the best IMO. Yet I rate this base on how popular people like it.

12) Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992)

This one has a good showing for Mothra and her evil twin Battra. Battra is a legit power house and Godzilla has his hands full with both moths. The characters and plot is bearable as well for another plus. Solid film.

11) Godzilla vs. Biollante

This is a good film. Its taken serious, has more of a darker atmosphere than most GZ movies, and the Kaiju baddie was very unique. Good watch.

10) Godzilla (1998)

Oh yeah hitting top ten, and what is this you ask? Are you seeing this right? Yup, Zilla himself makes my top 10. This film has a terrible plot, corny as hell characters, the Kaiju itself being killed in the end. So was Shin Godzilla, but no one brings that up. Why I rate it so highly? This movie is re watchable for me. I have a good time with this movie. The characters are not boring. The plot is over the top. The Monster is a unique version. This movie biggest crime is being called "Godzilla", but was a great Kaiju film, and one that I remember more than most.

9) Godzilla: Final Wars

I like this movie. So over the top. So stylish. So much action. This movie is Matrix mix with Independence Day mix with Godzilla. Its so much fun and so entertaining.

8) Invasion of Astro-Monster

Another solid entry in GZ film library. The Xillians were interesting and fleshed out aliens. I also love seeing Rodan and Godzilla team up against Ghidroah. A must watch.

7) Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)

Godzilla vs Kong rematch, and boy was this spectacle all the rage in theaters. The plot is dumb. The characters only serve their purpose. The side plot with the scooby gang pointless. But who cares? The action, scenery, effects, and seeing Godzilla, Kong, and MechaGZ in one movie was great! The fact Kong was portrayed as a underdog and closest ally to humans was a good choice. Godzilla being the clear superior to Kong was also a wrong put right from the older version. Loved it.

6) Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

This is the Heisei version, and is well done. Enjoyable battles, a cool version of Rodan, and decent overall effects. I like how Rodan plays a pivotal role, and the Super Mechagodzilla itself. Godzilla is also a bad guy, and pretty much killed in this film before Rodan saves him. It was a very straight forward plot too. One of the best Heisei films.

5) The Return of Godzilla

The American version of this film is meh, but the Japan version is excellent. It is dark, oppressing atmosphere, moments of legit horror, and Godzilla is a truly monstrous threat. One of the best.

4) Godzilla (1954)

The original and classic. This film was made to be serious, and sad. It is a very intense film with some very real dark themes of radiation poison affecting the Japanese people after the bombs drop on two of their cities. I love it and holds up.

3) Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)

This movie was criminally torn apart. Yes it has corny characters, and the humans were possibly not given enough or in other peoples opinions had too much screen time. Either way the humans were memorable, and made me laugh. The monster action was also just perfect in scope and effects. When the Kaiju battle I was glued. Also helps it is starring Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah. The same cast of my favorite number one film.

2)Terror of Mechagodzilla

This movie is my favorite and most rewatch film as a child and now as a dad. I loved this film. Titanosaurus and Mechagodzilla teaming up on underdog Godzilla, for intense battles, and pretty serious dark themes. Themes of murder, revenged, and the loss of ones child. The plot is very good and makes more sense than most GZ film plots. I really enjoy this film.

1) Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster

And my number one film is none other than the first movie with Ghidorah ever. This was also the first movie with other Toho Kaiju teaming up in the same movie. In short this was one of the very first Avenger films to have multiple characters from solo films share the same screen against a big bad. Rodan from Rodan, Mothra from The Thing, and Godzilla team up to fight the powerful King Ghidorah. This movie also showed how Toho had one of the first ever "shared universe" along with Universal Monsters. This movie also has serious acting, and a serious plot of a woman trying to be assassinated while warning people of the Ghidorah threat. A great film.
