My Top Superman Stories

This is a list of my most favourite Superman stories including Story Arcs and TPB's (trade paper backs/graphic novels).

Now Superman isn't may favourite superhero, but he is up there, and he's been in some fabulous stories. Now my Superman collection isn't huge (well compared to some of my other collections), but I am trying to get as much as I can, even if it's just in TPB's. I can't say I've read a huge run on Superman that has had a brilliant writer, but what I've read of Geoff Johns, and James Robinson's work have been very good.

The list will change from time to time if I've either read a new story or read a old one again feeling I've ranked it too high or too low.

WARNING: THERE MAY BE THE ODD SPOILER IN THIS LIST

List items

  • 5/5 Reviewed Complete Collection TPB

This was a phenomenal story, and my all time favourite Superman story, and it'd take sometime special to replace that. Grant Morrison did a outstanding job of showing Superman at his weakest point, knowing that he's going to die. It also had some amazing mini-stories that were fun, exciting, emotional, and overall entertaining. Morrison also did a fabulous job showing the character relationships, especially between Lois, and Superman, which usually comes out as the best relationship development in a Superman story. Frank Quitely also produces some fantastic art, and although not to everyone's taste, I love his unique, quirky style, which suited this story perfectly, especially during the Bizarro World part.

This was a brilliant story, and J. Michael Straczynski did a brilliant job. I wasn't too sure what the Earth One book would be like originally, but when I heard that Staczynski would be at the helm I had high hopes (unfortunately his run on the main Superman series with Grounded wasn't that good). I loved the retelling of Superman's origin, and Straczynski handled the character's, and story perfectly. Shane Davis also done some amazing artwork on this book, making Superman look phenomenal, and more modern.

  • 5/5 Reviewed

There wasn't a lot between this story, and it's predecessor, as both were very entertaining, though this one was almost the better of the two, but small things prevented that. J. Michael Straczynski continued to add more depth to the character's in this story, developing them perfectly. He also did a great job of adding new character's, including Parasite, and also added some phenomenal action. Shane Davis also once again astonished me with his artwork, making the Man of Steel look amazing, and his art, along with Straczynski's writing have made these stories truly wonderful, and I can't wait for Volume 3.

  • 4.5/5 Reviewed Complete Collection TPB

This was a very controversial Superman story, mainly due to a change in Superman's characteristics. I personally didn't mind this, and liked seeing a darker, more humanized Superman. Brian Azzarello did a fabulous job of producing a very unique and exciting story, and Jim Lee did what he always does, make it look phenomenal. This was a very mysterious story, and I was very interested in it throughout. It was however slightly confusing at times, but it explained itself in due course, and helped build the mystery. It also had some amazing fight sequences, and featured characters like the JLA, with Batman, and Wonder Woman having longer appearances.

  • 4/5 Reviewed TPB

This was a fun re-telling of Superman's origin. It had some brilliant emotion, with the young Clark being afraid that he'll no longer be the Kent's son, as well as some amazing humour from the mild-mannered reporter. There was also some decent fight sequences, which although not brilliant were good, exciting. The development of the character's was also wonderfully handled, and overall Geoff Johns did an amazing job of writing this story, as did Gary Frank with his phenomal artwork.

  • 4/5 Reviewed

Although not exactly a Superman story, it is centred on Superman's arch enemy Lex Luthor. This story was originally out in a 5 part mini-series, and collected in a TPB, but I opted to go for this deluxe extended HC edition. The story is very interesting, and like all Brian Azzarello stories, very unique. It shows a very different side to Luthor, whilst also showing some characteristics that we associate with him. Although this wasn't the most exciting story every it was very entertaining and it had some exciting moments near the end. It also featured some phenomenal artwork from Lee Bermejo.

  • Superman Issues: 4/5 Overall Crossover: 4/5 Reviewed Superman #13-15

This was a brilliant crossover, and although the Superboy, and Supergirl parts of the crossover weren't always brilliant, the Superman part of the story was. After seeing the New 52 Superman series poor for so long I'm glad to see it in good shape, and hope that this is a sign of things to come.

I can't believe H'El on Earth is on this list...over For All Seasons...

Also the lack of "What's so Funny about Truth Justice and the American Way?", "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow" and "Red Son" is disturbing.

@TimeLordScience: H'el on Earth is above for the Superman parts because as far as I can remember For All Seasons was only good enough for 4 stars, but I haven't read it in a while, so when I re-read it it may go up. As for the others I haven't read them. As stated at the top of my list I haven't read as many Superman stories as I'd like to have, but am seeking to justify that. Got For Tomorrow to read, and Luthor ordered. I considered getting Red Son, but didn't like the idea of Superman as Russian.

@theincrediblesuperhulk8642: I gave H'el on Earth an overall 4, but seems this is mainly a Superman list I took the average for the Superman issues, which was a 4.5. Can't recall exactly how much I enjoyed For All Seasons as haven't read it in years, but remembered that it didn't startle me, but that I did enjoy it, hence the 4. Not read any of Moore's stuff really should. Been meaning to read more of Moore's work in general as I've only read Watchmen which I loved, and his runs on Superman, and Swamp Thing are meant to be great, as is V for Vendetta (film was great), and From Hell (although film wasn't great).

@theincrediblesuperhulk8642: I have actually re-evaluated H'el on Earth, as although I enjoyed it I'd say it wasn't quite 4.5 star material, and that I was a bit hasty with that, so have changed it to 4, although I will have to re-read For All Seasons before I move that above it.

@johnkmccubbin91 I loved everything Azzarello did with Superman. he had 2 of the best artists and the stories were so good although not everyone liked For Tomorrow i loved it and Luthor Man of Steel is what made him one of my favourite villains. i liked him before but that made me more of a fan

@theincrediblesuperhulk8642: Luthor was amazing, and I actually like the villain more myself, as I found him overused, and poorly used a lot prior to that, and although he still is now, I appreciated a modern story with Luthor being used properly.

@theincrediblesuperhulk8642: I haven't read their runs, but will do so sometime in the future, and the animated shows certainly did as well.
