I originally started collecting in high school during the late 80's. (god I'm getting old) After reading a friend's copy of The Killing Joke, I went and bought a copy for myself and giggled like a schoolgirl when the value of the book went up. I continued buying books for their prospective values and as a side effect, I really got into some of the stories. After getting out of collecting sometime in the 90's, I sold off some books over the years and while I ended up making some money off them, there were a bunch that I ended up missing.
I recently getting back into reading them again on a whim, and discovered some old favorites that I thought had been sold. Needless to say, I was hooked again and for the first time in almost 20 years, made my way back into a comic book shop once again and picked up a stack of my previous favorites (WOW how some have changed!) to slowly find out what I now enjoy.
I feel like a kid again (in a good way). I found that I still love Batman as much as I used to. I find myself always looking forward to the next trip to the store every Wednesday. I am even starting to introduce my children to comics. My 13 year old Daughter loves Lenore, my 4 year old Son loves for me to read him the latest Iron Man and Batman, and while my 6 year old Daughter doesn't seem to be interested in them too much yet, I still think she just needs to find the right book =P.
I try not to worry about them wrecking the books too much, but I am still teaching them the proper way to handle and store them and we try to read everything we buy (even the stinkers). I still find myself buying a #1 of a book, but only if it looks interesting, not for it's prospective value this time. I also don't bother with any of the variant covers, especially if they are priced higher. I still prefer "floppies" to TPBs, though the latter seems to be the cheapest way to cach back up with some of the stuff I missed out on during my hiatus. I don't think I will ever buy into the whole digital comic thing, there are just too many things missing from that experience. The way the book smells and feels when its new, the way that same book smells when you pull it out 20 years later to read it again to your kids, you can't put a value on that.
