I’ve been a pretty avid reader of this character and some Aquaman lore and it’s pretty notable in various forums that many mistake this character and his abilities to begin with. After a bit of digging, I found this respect thread has been a source of misconception one way or another.

One issue is that people can’t get a clear distinction of his power level and I see in battle forums that many assume he is usually “amped”, which is not the case. Both Pre and New 52, He has operated under his own power though there’s context to consider.

First and foremost; Arion’s powers revolve around pulling from a source. From Warlord #55 - Arion, Lord of Atlantis #10 , this source is usually defined from being of stellar (solar) sources. During this period, he is only amped in issue #8 of Arion, Lord of Atlantis from Calculha’s crystal ball in which he destroys in the same issue. Also to note; some of his power was in flux in Warlord early on as Calculha’s test of his worthiness of assuming his place among gods (retconned to be a test that has him chosen as an agent of Order).

Between #9-#33 in his solo and a few outside appearances, Arion is nearly completely depowrered and is reliant on his father’s crystal shards, chant-based spells, his gemstone, and pulling from esoteric sources or godly sources (An entry from Who’s Who defines he can pull power from all kinds of sources) though he struggles consistently throughout the series to sufficiently energize his power.

From #33 to his special, Arion operates at full power and is expressed to be more powerful than his earlier appearances at full power, now pulling from Darkworld (there’s misinformation stating that it’s his mother’s dimension, which it is not; Darkworld is a dimension created by a cosmic being’s dream. The dreams were powerful enough to generate magical energy and spawn its own gods; those Gods included Calculha, Chaon, Deedra, Jheryl, etc. Majistra wanted to adopt Darkworld’s magic as her own and pull from it as a source. She’s actually a goddess born on Earth). However, changes in Darkworld left him depleted again for 45,000 years.

In the modern era (Arion the Immortal #1 onward in both his limited series and outside that like Aquaman and Wonder Woman), he regained the power he had from Arion #33 onward and operated under his power until his death. He was NOT amped by Morgana Le Fey (an issue in Wonder Woman only showed her to place him in mind control) and I wouldn’t even count most of Mordru’s showing in his body. He does use a spell of Arion’s creation while in his body to sap away Fate’s own prior to taking his power (Onyx Hunger) but that’s about it.

The past version of Arion that fought Superman originating from the 1600 chronologically falls under after Arion lost his power until Arion the Immortal #1 so he’s depowered and is reliant on objects providing magic to cast spells. He’s not amped since he relies on items to operate at that point. There is a level of prep involved because of it though.

Tldr; Arion’s power is being a leech of sorts and is depowered consistently. It’s not often his character is actually amped like people believe in threads I’ve read.

Magus

No Caption Provided

Origin: Formerly Earth-7582 (Alternate Timeline of Earth-616); Currently acts as a reborn version of that timeline's Magus in Earth-616

Aliases: The Anti-Life, Slayer of Galaxies, Adam Warlock, the Lurky Man, Adam Magus.

Affiliations: Universal Church of Truth, Follower of the Many-Angled Ones & Cancerverse Captain Marvel

Species/Race: Gene-Bred Post-Human (Cosmic Being); Artificially created and genetically modified human being. (Once stated to also being a magical being)

Weapons: Soul Gem, Faith Technology

Powers/Abilities: Energy Manipulation, Sorcery, Enhanced Biology, Matter Manipulation, Cosmic Senses, Martial Arts, High Intelligence, Powers via Soul Gem, Powers via Faith Technology

Character & Feat Myths

Just like Adam Warlock, there are a few feats and character facts that comic vine has perpetuated not always of malicious intent but nevertheless, I feel it is important to note as we go along here to ensure what will entail and anything I feel that needs to be addressed:

    • The Magus in Infinity War is the same as both the Future version and even the one that has appeared in the GOTG-beyond. As far as anything will tell you in the respective comics, they're not separate being but have, in fact, operated on a different power level.
    • Current comics have said that the Magus is now a "dark reflection" of Adam Warlock. Even past events are somewhat retconned to saying so although a future version of himself still exists.
    • As far as I'm aware, the Magus teleporting planets in Thanos: Ignition 1 is under his own power and not amp. The Handbook's recount concerning this event makes no mention of using the Church to usher in the way for Cancerverse Marvel to travel in long story short. However, many viners may believe it to be amp based on dialogue, although the fact they chanting doesn't mean it's something that is giving Magus power and seems to be the fact they're simply preparing for the arrival for the Many-Angled Ones, unknown the fact they're getting blown up to ensure their arrival. Furthermore, some viners in debate threads will use it to low-ball Magus's showings by implying he's only powerful in DnA storylines because of amp despite being weakened for most of his appearance in the WOK storyline.

Dark Future & Reflection Incarnation (Current)

No Caption Provided

This part of the thread will contain feats both from the OG Magus in the old Warlock books and the current books. The reason being is because the versions share the same "origin" point of being from an alternate timeline. However, there are quite some differences thanks to most likely some time-manipulating related thing.

The easiest way to sum it up is this: the former Magus was a evil future version of Adam Warlock until he aborted that timeline and that future version of himself. However, after re-integrating that timeline into Earth-616, the Magus now exists as a former dark personality of Warlock and later it's own independent entity, being called a "dark reflection" to Adam Warlock.

  • Dark Future: This details any feats he had performed during the events of the old Warlock solo series. This is also the "OG Magus" and "Afro Magus", as it is referred to in Comicvine and other comic-book related forum sites!
  • Dark Reflection: This details any feats Magus performs in War of Kings-beyond! Keep in mind that during War of Kings/Thanos:Ignition , he and Adam are instead the same person (referred to as a "dark personality"). After Thanos: Ingition where he died, he reappeared in the Annihilation: Earthfall storyline as a separate being. From that point on, he is referred to as a Dark Reflection. So there will be some overlapping with Adam Warlock feats displayed in my respect thread for him.

Dark Future

Note: This version of the Magus retains feats from his time during Counter Earth and possibly during his time as Him per being the future version of Adam Warlock, in which he fought during the Magus Saga storyline.

Physical Abilities

Was casually capable of taking on a army of alien soldiers, defeat them with incredible ease using his physical power and some of the Soul Gem. (Warlock 9)
Was casually capable of taking on a army of alien soldiers, defeat them with incredible ease using his physical power and some of the Soul Gem. (Warlock 9)

Goes head-to-head with Thanos. Not only is able to tank his attacks but also is able to actually gain the upper-hand on pre-resurrection Thanos, who was powerful to the point Thanos admitted to having orchaestrated a plot in order to instead have Warlock around, who would be more manageable for him. (Warlock 11)

Energy Manipulation & Cosmic Powers

Claims to have powers over space, time, soul, and mind. [By all means, he displays some abilities in control over space with teleportation, the soul obviously with the Soul Gem, telepathic attacks with the mind. I've yet to really see him have power over time itself, though he has cosmic senses that does perceive time at a different level.] (Stranger Tales 178)

Magus vs Warlock & Gamra; Showcases a myraid of feats and powers: Shrugs off attacks from the Soul Gem, Can project special radiation to summon the In-Betweener using the Soul Gem as a focal point, created an elaborate illusion only keen minds can endure or see through, and phases through a wall. [Keep in mind that just about everything he shows here, he merely uses the Soul Gem as a focal point, revealing he has powers from being in the cocoon for a long time. So don't confuse some of the feats for being exclusive for him having the Soul Gem.]
Possesses God-like senses capable of perceiving an multi-actuality layering camouflage [This made Gamora seemingly invisible to him]. (Warlock 9)

Soul Gem

Directly uses the Soul Gem to create as shield powerful enough to endure an attack from Thanos. (Warlock 11)
Directly uses the Soul Gem to create as shield powerful enough to endure an attack from Thanos. (Warlock 11)

Dark Reflection

Magus is capable of performing all the same feats Adam Warlock has displayed in his current incarnation up the point I have labelled as "Upgrade" in his respect thread because the Magus at that point existed as a "darkness" or "dark personality" (if you take outside Marvel Sources like that of Avengers Alliance), meaning they share the same body. Upgrade and beyond remains to be seen.

While this creator of the respect thread believes Adam Warlock during the Infinity Trilogy Era in physical power isn't different , some other doubt it too so that's up to you!

Physical Abilities

Able to fight Gamora physically with ease and seemingly kill her (actually extracts her soul to appear dead). At the same time, Major Victory's contributions are useless and he gets taken out quickly and the Magus clearly demonstrates prowess in using a sword and Captain America's shield. (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 19)
Limitation: His remarkable durability can be cut through with magical blades infused with, well, magic like death magic. However, he can easily heal himself. (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 19)

Overpowers Quasar. (The Thanos Imperactive: Ignition 1)
Easily survived the same hit that killed Thanos from Drax, stating he doesn't actually even need his heart to function. And is still standing after that. (Guardians of the Galaxy 23 (2008))
LIMITATION: Magus is obliterated by Cancerverse!Captain Marvel. (Thanos: Ignition 1)

Quantum Magic Manipulation

Wrecks the Guardians of the Galaxy for the most part until he is stopped by a cosmic cube. Here, he uses Soul Manipulation [This is revealed in 20] to extract the souls of Gamora, Phyla-Vell, Mantis, and Cosmo. You'll see this in the Soul Manipulation portion. He also showcases telekinesis and superb healing as well as teleporting even Phyla's blade to his hand.(Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 19)
Capable of magical lightning. His power is ranked to be higher then Evil Quasar and Worldmind cannot even actually comprehend Magus's power but knows it's far higher then Richard Rider's own. (The Thanos Imperaction: Ignition 1)
Uses his power to teleport planets with his magic before destroying them by uttering the phrase: Ignition. (Take note that, despite popular belief, the Magus is doing that under his own power. The Character & Feats Myth will explain why this is so) (The Thanos Imperaction: Igniton 1)
Took control of the timeline and futures of Earth-616 and made it where all futures had the common effect of the Magus ruling alongside his Universal Church of Truth. His control was so powerful Kang feared directly manipulating time would enable Magus to see him coming. (Guardians of the Galaxy 23 (2008))
Transmute reality to create a extremely realistic illusion where he has Star-Lord kill Adam before he could completely turn into the Magus. (Guardians of the Galaxy 23 (2008))

Manipulates the souls of members of the Guardians of Galaxy with incredible ease after killing them. [Somehow though, they later reappear in their bodies despite having been reduced the souls and an ensuring explosion wiping out anything around there (including their bodies) in it.] (Guardians of the Galaxy 23 (2008))

Magus easily overpowers the likes of Gladiator's confidence that enables his strong will and takes control of his body. It should be noted, however, the Magus himself even admits that he couldn't overtake him forever despite commenting the will that the Gladiator has felt like a "tickle". (Annihilation: Earthfall 4)

Using the UCT Faith generation, he imposes his will on over 30% of the US Population rather quickly. (Annihilation: Earthfall 3)

Manage to cleave the had of the Contemplator, a Elder of the Universe. LIMITATION: Magus is killed by Ultron. (Infinity Countdown Prime 1) [For now, I'm putting it in "other" because of it being a recent comic book issue and the fact that the event has only started. I'll wait until more details come out to see if Magus is permanently out and not jump to conclusions. I would classify this as a low showing & limitation in the physical abilities section otherwise, as both Magus [and Contemplator] for some reason don't have their regenerative abilities addressed, shown, or referred to. In fact, the same issue clearly showcased regeneration from Wolverine and Loki but decided that two other characters with same regeneration powers dont get to use them. And this thread clearly shows him tanking a very similar attack from Drax that once killed Thanos to the point that one can reasonably conclude to be a strange showing, although your opinion will differ depending on your opinion of Magus and whether or not Ultron is capable of doing this. Take this however you want!]

Reborn Incarnation (Infinity War-era)

No Caption Provided

Although the same being, the Magus we see in Infinity War and beyond until War of Kings is a reborn version of the Dark Future (and by extension, the current version). Out of all the incarnations of the Magus we've witnessed, this is by far seemingly the weakest version of them. Subjectivity still applies but the difference in power and capability is rather noticeable in my opinion. Still, as I've said in the Adam Warlock respect thread, there are no official wording that the Magus's different incarnation is drastically different in power, capability, etc. So you may draw your own conclusions on competency and power of this incarnation of Magus.

With that said, there is really no need to split anything here like the previous heading. There is no significant incarnation to make note of this version of Magus.

Great thread. My only observation is with your speed feat You said he keeps up with the surfer. Looking at the scan, you can see the surfer is actually carrying him. I don't think he has ever been as fast as the surfer, That's why he needed him during the infinity gauntlet arc. Surfer was the only one fast enough to carry out his plan to get the gauntlet.

I forgot to note this a few months back reading this but since you pointed it out, i took it down.

Why are people saying he's "featless"? Infinity Entity, Thanos: Infinite Revelation, and Infinity Relativity all feature the Adam that eventually becomes Living Tribunal and displays the powers you expect the living tribunal to have. O_o

because the new version of LT has a different way of thinking to say the least. the old LT was rather aloof and a bit presumptous.

That's true but having a different way of thinking doesn't make someone featless. .-. LT Adam has already shown his capabilities beforehand as he grasped his godlyhood.

Character and Feat Myths

Going through comic vine, I've seen people who speak about Adam Warlock and whether hater or fan, there's various things that they've gotten completely wrong. This section is dedicated to pointing out these claims and myths with truths terms with feats and capabilities. Many of these will have supporting images or sources to make it easy to understand. Here's some I've noted:

  • The splitting between the Current and Classic feats are for convenience. There's no official text supporting the idea that he's "stronger" or "much better" in his classic versions. Most incarnations didn't give him new powers, but further amplified his already present powers he has outside the Soul Gem. The Soul Gem also bestowed powers based on it AND amplified certain abilities. There's this idea that Classic Warlock > Current Warlock or even vice versa. The truth is: The only thing that separates them is the Soul Gem and people's opinion of subjectivity of which era looks more impressive. (Sans his Him incarnation.)
  • This will be explained in the Sorcery portion of the Current incarnation section but Adam's mystical power are now under "Sorcery" and "Mysticism". Yes, he has been doing a variation of a kind of magic and has been referred to as mystic. Refer to yourself to that section for more information. (Proof is in the appropriate sections)
  • He has NOT ever beaten the likes of Thor in the comics. In all three fights, he's only look impressive in one. (They'll be in the Respect Thread with appropriate sourcing.)
  • He did not lose a fight to the character Maxam during the Warlock and the Infinity Watch. I've seen this pointed out as a low showing but neglect to not only mention at his max, he's about Class 100 according to handbooks (not super accurate but he did fight against Hercules) but that Adam was ambused and considered him a friend, meaning he held back. Furthermore, it was Moondragon who put in a hallucination of Maxam killing Adam. (Warlock and the Infinity Watch 40)
  • He's won against Quasar. Many people who have done a Quasar vs Warock post up until the point he began draining his energy. The fight goes BEYOND that point in Adam's favor. Those who post things as a low showing need to be aware of the COMPLETE fight. It should be posted here too.
  • Pointed out in the Quantum Magic/Physical Capabilities portion, his stabbing within Guardians of the Galaxy run (Abnett/Lanning Run) was done by a powered up sword, not an ordinary one. Those who look at it for a durability low showing need to read the entire issue 3 of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for context behind it.
  • Soul sucking capabilities are a last resort tactic on Adam's behalf.
  • Adam's strength level has not ever really been specified outside handbooks and showing against fights. He's ranked on the same strength level as Carol Danvers at his fullest augmented and Class 10 when base.

Contrary to popular belief, it seems that since his re-introduction from Abnett and Lanning's stories, Adam himself is specified more heavily to be a actual Sorcerer and previous handbooks have also labelled him a "Mystic", meaning he's been having magical capabilities. So let it be known this Respect Thread will refer mystical powers as outright Sorcery/ Magic.

Adam one-shots the Phalax Select, Shattarax and sends him flying in the process. Apparently, this guy was once capable of not only holding off Iron Man, but was also able to gain the upperhand. So this is a nicer feat then it appears as he easily takes out a character who was once on Iron Man's level. (Annihilation: Conquest 1)

Versus Drax for the first time. Beats him with superior skill. (Silver Surfer Vol 3 47) [A lot of people claim that being in the Soul World gave Adam the edge. This is false, as Adam did not noticeably augment his strength from being in the Soul World and replicated this feat later in his life.

Did some updates finally. Not completely done, as I need to get a little more of the Batman & Robin Eternal and Robin: War feats too. But there's some of the earlier issues of Batman & Robin Eternal feats up and most other things are from Grayson.

I also added a portrayal portion so when series take a shat on Dick, exaggerates to Dick God level, or has a good conssitent appearance, we can made note of it somewhere so people looking in this can get as INFORMED AS POSSIBLE. I encourage people to pull up disagreements/agreements/personal opinions should they be INFORMED.

It's been a while since I was here.

Personally, so long as Dick can still go globetrotting, has his superspy skills and some gadgets mixed with his Nightwing stuff, and gets the proper solo book treatment as Nightwing, he can be Iron Man for all I care. And I hope we don't trail him having a civilian life honestly. If Grayson showed us one thing, it's that he's best just sticking to herorics thick and thin. Every other superhero has a direction of balancing a normal life with a superhero ones. An all-out superhero like Nightwing is a better idea IMO.

Ugh. Please lets not revisit the "Nightwing is a pro-cheating skank" when the ONE time it was done was out of character. Not to mention the issue this takes place in was a completely unnecessary retcon to add drama that ends up making all it's involved characters OOC so much so when DC did their Convergence book, they straight up ignore this issue altogether and retconed it out. Writers make TERRIBLE MISTAKES sometimes.

I'll have to agree with the people in the thread saying that Batman's words about him being a "clearer vision of Batman" sounds all nice and tingly, but really amounts to /NOTHING/. Not to mention borderline disrespectful. I'm very much tired of the comparisons between him and Batman all the time.

A respectful event would have made more emphasis on Dick Grayson himself as a /person/, not his relationship to Batman. It was /his/ 75th anniversary and yet, I still had to read the redundant comparisons I've read way too many times. In this day and age, it's about time that Dick Grayson got defined without his relationship to Batman or even the Batfamily.

This event has been nothing but disrespectful. He can't even quit on his OWN terms. Oh no, If Bruce can't do it, he can't either. You cannot tell me they wrote this and the book is respectful. What's respectful about the guy who could be a GL quitting? Getting slapped by everyone? Being slow on solving mysteries to make the story last? His anniversary used to up another character who took traits form him? His skill always being called into question constantly?

How does it come off as disrespectful? Do Tim or Jason's then come off as disrespectful? Becuase there's not liking something because you're tired of it and not liking it because it's negative. The former I can understand, the latter I can't. Even if you don't take any meaning from it I can't really see how it could be read as Bruce disrespecting Dick. Unless you mean disrespectful that the writer is comparing Dick to Bruce, in which case I assume that Jason, Tim, and Damian are also being disrespected.

Doubt Dick is ever not going to be compared to Bruce. Same for Jason, Tim, and Damian. Think that's honestly an unrealistic and unnecessary expectation. But then, i've never been one that was annoyed by it, as I think it makes sense for a man to be compared to his father. Though that may also be because i've had people compare me to my father (And older brother for that matter).

However, I also think that writers have always done just as much to show that while Dick is similar to Bruce (Which makes sense for too many reasons to even mention) he's not Bruce, existing as his own person. Same again applies to Jason and Tim.

(Apologies on the late reply)

Yeah, I mean it being disrespectful in the "writer comparing Dick to Bruce" too and to an extent, I think it does insult the other Robins. I do not mean Bruce himself disrespected it cause in that context, he see's it and words it as a compliment. Again, the comparison of Dick (and the Robins in general) and Batman have been the most done to death things and tend to actually take focus off of them as independent cahracters.

I don't mind comparisions at all. The act of comaprison in itself is inevitable and interesting from time to time. Just a book chock full of 'em tend to annoy me, especially when they amount to "you're not as a good as xyz". And ill timing in my opinion. An event centered around Robins should focus on them or at least let them have indepedent agencies. Imagine If Batman's anniversary featured a event that started heavily on Superman and compared him constantly to Superman that chalked up to "He's not as good".

And I agree, they do show Dick is similar to Bruce but NOT Bruce along with the Robin. But how many times are we going to explore that with a big storyline? I love legacies but it's a tired theme with the Robins and I would like a little variety and have that particular theme explored here and there. Robin War wasn't perfect to me, but I liked the idea of it since it did actually focus on the Robins on more then solely the idea of how they relate to Batman. I feel there's more interesting stories to be told then how a character revolves around Batman, even If you make it sound nice and respectable.
