Cowabunga, dude. 3

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) are back with this short prelude to IDW's new TMNT series issue #1. Old Hob, a new foe in terms of comic appearances, makes his debut against three of the turtles and Master Splinter. Donatello, the bo wielding turtle; Leonardo, the katana wielding turtle; Michelangelo, the nunchuku wielding turtle; along with Master Splinter face off against Old Hob's street gang which is comprised of human thugs.  After the three turtles and Master S...

Silent Castle breached 1

Previously on G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero...COBRA was hired by the US government to provide national security after attacks on the capital, monuments, and government offices by Broken Star Liberation Army and other US anti-government organizations, who were secretly funded and organized by COBRA. After taking control of the national security, the government contractor COBRA identifies the disbanded G.I. Joe team as terrorists and begin to systemically hunt them down and kill them. However, the...

One of the best issues of 2009 2

Usagi Yojimbo (Dark Horse vol 3) issue number 123 was nominated for the 2010 Eisner Award for "Best Single Issue (or One-Shot.) Usagi Yojimbo is well known for it's awards and nominations. In 2009, the series was nominated for 2009 Eisner Award for "Best Continuing Series". Over the years, Stan Sakai (one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet) has racked up over 20 nominations and a few other awards such as the Eisner Award for "Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition." I don't know why there's ...

This ain't Scott Pilgrim, it's Frank Castle vs the World 0

Overview A virus is released into the world that reverts humanity to a simplistic cannibalistic state. Luckily for us, one of the few unaffected humans is Frank Castle. Although, on the other hand, he might just be the one who caused this trouble to begin with... The Good The writing, tone, and artwork is superb. Frank's voice sounds just as I imagine it and Jonathan Maberry does a great job of bringing back good old Frank. The story is set up outside of Marvel 616 continuity as a stand-alone s...

We have to Charlie Mike. 0

I try to avoid spoilers in reviews, so don't expect to read any. I will provide an overview of the story without trying to give away any details.   The last issue left us with a COBRA sniper taking aim at Stalker’s position in the foothills of the Hindu Kush (mountain range between Afghanistan and Pakistan). Back in the states, the rest of the Joes were trying to avoid being captured by COBRA forces now operating as US military and police forces. The United States was under martial l...

They got mixed up, but the stories are both excellent 1

Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark is the harebrained idea thought up by Jason Howard (artist from Astounding Wolfman) and Ryan Ottley (artist of Invincible). They arrived at the concepts from a late night post-conference discussion about what is scarier than a bear in the woods. Their answer was a shark in the woods, but how did the shark get there and where did the bear go? Those ideas lead them to Robert Kirkman (writer of Astounding Wolfman and Invincible). Kirkman’s first question was how did they ...

Operation Anabasis, heading to Romeo Papa 0

Issue #156, follows IDW's GI JOE # 155 1/2 Free Comic Book Day issue and continues the original Marvel G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero story line with the original characters and writing Larry Hama.   In case you've forgotten what happened in the December 1994 issue #155, COBRA has taken control of the US government and has declared martial law. FCBD issue 155 1/2 does a good job of bringing readers up to date on the events since the series ended in 1994.   The nation...

Embrace Eternity 1

After the destruction of the Citadel (ending of Mass Effect: 1 video game), Commander Shepard's ship (the Normandy) is attacked and his body is taken. It's been a month or so since that attack and Dr. Liara T'Soni has found a contact with information on Shepard's body. Liara was a teammate and possible romantic interest from video game based on in-game RP decisions.  For the Mass Effect fans, like me, the issue starts off with a little recap of what's happened since the end of the video game and...

Deapool's a freaking genius, again 0

The thing that I enjoy reading the most about Deadpool is how his zany and somewhat crazy ideas actually turn out to be a perfect strategy. It's just that none of the other characters (or even myself as a reader) can see the big picture as the story progress. His outragous plots seem to be crazy, but he's just a strategic genius that's often overlooked. Over the last comics, Deadpool has wanted to sign up to become an X-Man. He even made his own costume and a pancake breakfast for his assigned X...

X-Force Annual #1 Review 0

There are two stories within this book. The first focuses on Wolverine, Warpath, X-23, and Wolfsbane breaking into a Hydra base to extract one of the Hydra soldiers. Although, they were sent on the mission, you only see the others in one panel before Wolverine tells them to just wait in the plane. Wolverine assaults the base, finds the one Hydra soldier they were looking for, and make his way to an extraction point. There the team flies out to meet with Cyclops at a hospital. A sick girl is need...

Deadpool fired as X-Men's spokesman 0

In the last issue, Deadpool sorta joined the X-Men - not that any of the X-Men wanted him to, but that they believed it was safer than letting Deadpool loose on the streets. In this issue, Deadpool tackles one of the X-Men's current problems, but opts for his own approach without warning the rest of the team what he's up to. Of course, Deadpool and the X-Men don't see eye-to-eye on the best approach. All the while, Norman Osborn is sitting back watching Deadpool's antics unfold on live televisio...
