A wonderful, loving tribute 0

This is an amazing, jaw-dropping tribute to Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes in all of it's incarnations/reboots, told through another great Amalgam Spider-Boy tale. Spider-Boy is really the Kesel "The Kid" version of Superboy, a personal favorite, and the fun of seeing all the various Legionnaires crossed with the Guardians of the Galaxy and even a Time Trapper/Immortus mash-up can't be beat! Probably the single best Amalgam story...

Superboy 2 2

This review and more comics news, reviews and opinions can be found at  www.comicplanetindustries.com  “Two words… PARASITE FROGS!”That may need some explanation. This month’s Superboy picks up where the last one left off: Poison Ivy is in Smallville and she needs Superboy’s help. Superboy initially distrusts her, but she claims she’s not the one causing all of the vegetation to go nuts. There’s some alien power affecting the whole Green and all the plant elementals are feeling it. They track it ...

Action Annual 13 0

This review and other mega-geekery can be found at   www.comicplanetindustries.com   Well, he’s done it again. Paul Cornell has taken his fantastic take on Lex Luthor in the pages of the monthly Action Comics series and condensed it into 2 self-contained stories, making this probably the best annual I’ve ever read. This slimly overtakes my previous favorite annual, which was, oddly enough, Action Comics Annual #2. What makes this annual better than that one is that this is entirely standalone, ...

Another win for Cornell 1

(This review and other comics blogging can be found at www.comicplanetindustries.com)   If you’re not reading this book, you are missing out. Paul Cornell has taken one of the most complex characters in comics (and also one of the easiest to screw up) and is handling him masterfully. In case you’re unaware, while JMS is putting people to sleep with Superman’s walkabout, Cornell has made Action Comics Lex Luthor’s domain. Following his taste of the Orange Lantern’s power in Blackest Night, Lex ha...

Who is Batwoman? 4

(This review and more comic-related fun can be found on www.comicplanetindustries.com)As you may recall, DC announced a few months ago that they were proceeding with a Batwoman on-going but without the guiding hand of Kate Kane’s original writer, Greg Rucka. The announced replacement writer? None other than the artist who created the beautiful look of Batwoman’s run in Detective Comics, J.H. Williams. If you missed that run on Detective, go get it! It’s collected in trades and, while a little o...

Retro Review: Underworld Unleashed #3 0

The best DC crossovers always start from a clear, specific and cool gimmick.  Justice Leaguers from the 853rd Century come back in time to challenge our Justice League to olympic-type games?  Cool, simple (the idea, anyway) and well-written.  A "Godwave" rebounds off the edge of the universe and steals/changes powers of super-heroes and it's all barely tied into some confusing New Gods story you probably weren't reading to begin with?  Uh, not so good.  Underworld Unleashed has that kind of a gi...

Grounded (and I'm not referring to the storyline) 1

Much like the interminable For Tomorrow storyline, DC stunt-casts with J. Michael Straczynski as the new writer of Superman to take what already feels like a departure from standard Superman story telling to allow an "auteur" writer to do whatever the hell he wants.  Is this necessarily a bad thing?  No, but JMS is already proving that bringing an big name in to "revitalize" one of the classic characters often results in the same old thing.  Attempting to "bring Superman back to his roots" (for ...

A Disappointing Anniversary 1

There is a distinct lack of substance to the fanfare here (which is also lacking).  The whole anniversary issue feels slapdash on DC's part, especially after the excellent roller coaster ride War of the Supermen provided and in anticipation of JMS' upcomign Grounded storyline.  The first story, The Comback, feels like at best an afterthought and at worse an extended version of the final scene of War of the Supermen 4 (the last time we saw Superman).  After an ultimately meaningless, by-the-numbe...

O, Call Back Yesterday! 0

Levitz is back, and his Legion is too.  After a first issue in first gear (final page aside), Levitz throws it into fourth for this one.  We've got multiple Legionnaires in multiple locations and Levitz juggles them while making it look easy.  The book is packed with story but never feels too busy and leaves me desperate for the next issue.  Cinar's art is clean and distinct.  Gorgeous backgrounds,  easily differentiable characters and detailed future tech.  Special shout out to Hi-Fi's excellen...

It's still called R.E.B.E.L.S.? 0

This book remains one of my current favorites, and one of the only books I buy on a regular basis and as soon as I can on the Wednesday it comes out (I've been known to leave work for a half hour to make a run to the comic store for it). This book is no exception, though not much happens.  Dox and the rest of "R.E.B.E.L.S." (which a narration box informs us is the "industry term" for the inner core of L.E.G.I.O.N.) are recovering from the Starro war, for which Despero seems to be getting all the...

Come On Now... 0

A single issue of a major crossover is usually 1/10th plot and 9/10ths character-focused, and Supergirl 52 does not buck that trend.  I was originally interested in this issue due to the revelations about "Supergirl" and her role in the Legion.  I say "Supergirl" because it was unclear until this issue as to which Supergirl we're talking about.  Does the pre-Crisis Supergirl remain the one involved with the Legion?  And if so, does Brainiac 5 remember her?  And how does he feel about this Superg...
