@indomitableregal: Thanks! I agree what you said about a good story taking a game from good to great, which is why video games can be art imo, because that interweaving emotional motivation to use the gameplay mechanics in a manner that will uplift the human spirit such as you know how we might want stay true to the character when its allowed such as being more stealthly non lethal for a heroic espionage soldier and we'll feel bad about if we run counter to the narrative unless we were trying to freak out the girls watching that we have crushes on thinking somehow that she'll be attracted to me, and my mom yelled at me to apologize and, then I'm not upset because of the game, I'm...wait what? lol
LMAO. XD
Appreciate your thoughts because I think I am with you on gameplay. I think we can take this to a reasonable degree where we won't want to choose a character that's immoral story-wise if the gameplay mechanics have more depth and complexity, but as long as it's decent, gameplay wins, and the mechanics can inform the characterization such as how their movement reflects the choices they made in their life to build up their skills and physique. What do you think? Being a fighting game fan?
Interesting. So like a story within the mechanics itself? Like for instance, how a character like Akuma can have standard shoto mechanics for the most part, but they feel much more brutal because of the character himself and the on-screen portrayal? Not sure I understood right lol.
Regarding Street Fighter, even though 5 and 6 had more story, do you think Street Fighter 2,3, and 4 will still be favorites?
Absolutely, particularly 2 & 3. In fact, I think 5 is gonna slide down the totem pole because it misstepped with its attempt at adding story. I think the gameplay was fine, but a lot of people view the story as a knock against it. 4 might be a little lower just because by today's standards, the designs look a little funny lol. But it was pivotal in the series and came at a time when the fighting game genre was on life support. SF6 however is shaping up to be a classic. Graphics are gorgeous, good blend of old gen, new gen, and brand new characters, inclusion of classic or modern controls, the open world create-a-player format, etc. This could end up as the series's magnum opus.
And I think Marvel vs Capcom 2 is still king.
I waffle between MvC2 and UMvC3 in my head all the time lol. I have the most fond memories with the former, but I think it speaks volumes that the latter came out in 2011 and the community for it is still very strong. Enough that it's still a major game at EVO. And I don't know if you've seen, but there are actually a few gamers that got together and have been added modded players to the roster (I think it's only available if you play the PC version). But it has over 50 new players available along with the same OG roster. They call it the Community Edition.
Who is your favorite video game character though because I think our favorite is one we have emotional attachment to where it relies on the character, in and of himself or herself, and not about the experience, unless it's because we spend so much time with him or her that we can build an attachment such as spending so long learning the fighting mechanics. Or a series of games such as Mario. I've actually never played through a Mario, so I'm guessing!
I wish I could search my head for every VG character I know, so I could have a better answer for this lol. But I think I'm gonna go with Ken Masters. Part of it is like you said, spending so long to learn the character. But another component is that I tend to favor the secondary characters, often because the narrative isn't automatically written for them to succeed. You can't say for certain how their story will play out. Mario is cool, but I prefer Luigi. Ryu is the face, but I'd rather play the more offensive Ken. Love Dante, but give me Vergil. That often extends into other media as well. Give me Raphael over Leonardo or Red Hood over Nightwing.
Always awesome reading your thoughts. I miss them! Hope you and yours are having a nice 2024 and you're staying warm!
Appreciated. I've been busier, so I haven't gotten to come around as much, but I still find pockets lol. And same to you!
