Gwandanaland Comics #27: Captain Flash 0

***Spoilers Galore!*** ...Seriously, I'm going to tell you everything. Don't let that deter you from getting the book though, because it is a great read!First things first: Gwandanaland Comics continues to reprint Golden Age stories in the Public Domain, and this gets five stars just for being collected. I've had this on my shelf for a few years, but only just got around to reading it. It is a fun-filled trip with some unique variations on villains you may have seen before. The BeginningFirst up ...

Gwandanaland Comics #578: The Red Torpedo 0

I really enjoyed this book. As ever, being a denizen of an anthology comic, The Red Torpedo does take some odd twists and turns. Which is why I appreciated that it actually held some continuity. The first two or three stories are somewhat tame. Jim Lockhart wants to build a torpedo that a man can drive, but the US Navy says no. So, he resigns, builds it himself, dons a red mask and costume, and starts helping the allies in various theaters of war. The wonderful "navigable torpedo" is "the most p...

Gwandanaland Comics #1758: The Complete Red Rocket 0

First: this gets 5 stars, just because it's a joy to have this book in my hands. Gwandanaland is just reprinting them. They didn't create the comics, so they can't rightly be held responsible for any deficiencies. That said, this is one of those that was kind of lacking. As part of an anthology comic, things were liable to- and for Red Rocket did- change from month-to-month, in an effort to keep readers' interests. I've always wondered what the barometer for changes was, but this character goes ...

Gwandanaland Comics #186: Drift Marlo - Space Detective 0

This 74-page book reprints both issues of Dell's "Drift Marlo." The first page claims to have received research assistance from the 1st Strategic Aerospace Division for technical material. Whether true or not, it's a fun ride, and reminds me of sci-fi radio dramas of the time that can be heard today on YouTube.Drift Marlo is the security man for Pacific Coast Rocket Base, protecting the personnel, and the future of the space race. He prevents sabotage to a launch in one issue, and the kidnapping...

Gwandanaland Comics #106: Golden Lad 1

Tommy Preston gains his powers from an ancient Aztec heart of gold. He basically becomes Superboy, with super strength, invunerability, flight, super speed, super smarts, and high voltage vision (x-ray vision). The stories are fun, and Tommy's grandpa is nice comic relief. Unfortunately, the thing I was really left to wonder about is never really addressed in the stories.Grandpa Preston's antique shop is full of some weird objects with mysterious properties. He bought them from the widow of his ...

Gwandanaland Comics #362: Mr. Muscles 0

I should clarify something about my Gwandanaland reviews- I give them five stars every time just for doing the collection, because I have great fun reading characters I've never had the chance to read before. Gwandanaland Comics reprints comic scans just as they are. If the comic had a flaw, the collection will have a flaw. So, if I ding the score at all, it's based on problems with the original comic, not with the collection itself. With this book, we're getting a collection of the two-issue Cha...

Gwandanaland Comics #1875: The Complete Barry Kuda 1

I have to be honest: This book gets five stars from me just for the name Barry Kuda- I love wordplay names! Gwandanaland has reprinted the original five Barry Kuda stories in this book. That's all of the Golden Age stories.Like seemingly all Golden Age stories that were part of an anthology, this story jumps right in. Barry and his pal, Algie, are drawn into a whirlpool that takes them to an undersea kingdom. There, they find that they can breathe underwater, and they are immediately drawn into ...

Gwandanaland Comics #1020: The Complete Dynamic Man 0

Another great read compiled by Gwandanaland Comics! Like many of the characters collected by Gwandanaland, their stories took place in anthology comics, which means the stories often jumped right in without bothering to give readers any kind of origin story. Not so here! We get the briefest of overviews that Dynamic Man was the subject of secret chemical experiments by one Dr. Stahl. And that's it! So, moving on...For the first few stories, the blonde Dynamic Man fights alone. By the sixth story...

Gwandanaland Comics #13: The Complete Black Cobra 0

Despite the description for this book, it is actually a collection of not one, but two Black Cobras. Like many of the public domain comic reprints I've read from Gwandanaland, this one reveals that the original publisher was completely willing to change things on a whim to attract readers. That aggravated me the first couple of books I read, because I felt that the changes were worse than the original versions. Not so with the Black Cobra. Also, these whimsical changes have grown on me, and now ...

Gwandanaland Comics #940 - Power Nelson: Futureman 1

Look, if this doesn't make you want to read the book, then I don't know what else I can tell you.Power Nelson - 1st story, 1st page.I don't know what all went into the creation of Power Nelson, but the premise seems to be pretty much "Looks like Flash Gordon, has the power of Superman, but it's set on Earth." The thing that really got my blood pumping to read this was the fact that this March, 1940 story dared to jump only forty-two years into the future. Perhaps that's merely a commentary on th...

Gwandanaland Comics #283 - The Complete Red Panther 0

Updated cover, January, 2019I don't know what happened, but somewhere along the way, I really kind of lost interest in the jungle story. Unless it's The Phantom. I dunno; put a costume on the main character, and I'm up for just about anything. So when I saw The Complete Red Panther amidst the covers of the Gwandanaland Comics offerings, I knew it was one that I had to read.A bit of trivia: as it turned out, I was the first person to ever buy this book, so my copy is the first ever printed. Not a...

Gwandanaland Comics #678 - Rusty Ryan - The Paul Gustavson Stories: Volume 1 0

Minor spoilers - the stories are 80 years old; you had your chance, okay? This is a trade paperback reprint of Rusty Ryan stories from the 1939 anthology title Feature Comics #32-73. Never heard of Rusty Ryan before? That's okay, neither had I. When I first started looking at the Gwandanaland covers on Facebook, the cover to this book caught my eye every time I ran across it for two reasons. First, the "Rusty Ryan" logo stands out, and second, because Rusty's costume looks remarkably like Captain...

Gwandanaland Comics #238 - The Green Turtle 0

This is a trade paperback reprint of the Green Turtle stories from the 1944 title Blazing Comics #1-5. As Blazing was an anthology title, each issue's stories were only about nine pages long, so they get right into it. Unfortunately, writer and artist are not listed anywhere in the stories. I think both the writing and art are typical for the Forties. That is, it does the job, but not super flashy.According to the stories, The Green Turtle is a legendary protector of China, and the people often ...
