Hellboy Vs Vampires...More Than Enough Reason to Pick This Up 2

Hellboy comes across a vampire and learns of a bigger threat to come. Can he survive this encounter and prevent the looming threat?  The Good This is a Hellboy story taking place in 1966. Technically this is issue #51 but, as you may know, the Hellboy stories are told in miniseries format. This has been a great way to keep the stories contained and eases the problem of making sure a firm release schedule is maintained.   The Sleeping and the Dead is a story that is easily accessible to all reade...

A Holiday Story Like None Other 5

The Holiday season tends to bring seasonal one-shots. Can a Christmas special with Larfleeze stand out from the past ones?  The Good Who else besides Larfleeze could possibly get this excited over Christmas? This is the guy that wants everything and a day present after present is given should be paradise for him. What happens when Larfleeze wakes up Christmas morning to find that Santa hasn't visited him? A crazy adventure by Geoff Johns and Brett Booth is what happens.  Johns cleverly spins the...

Who Doesn't Like Rabbits With Swords? 0

Usagi Yojimbo comes across a scam going on by master thief Kitsune. Should he step in and do something about it?  The Good Despite the involvement of swords and fighting, Usagi Yojimbo has an innocent feel to it. The combination of black and white art, cute animals and humorous situations makes each book an escape from the often predictable stories seen in most other comics. The stories continue to shine and entertain as you sit back and enjoy the issue. Even if you haven't been reading Usagi mo...

Is This What War Will Be Like in the Future? 2

In the year 2054, a private security firm is approved by the U.N. to be outsourced for military missions. What will this mean for the main character that gets a job with the firm?  The Good The idea that private could be involved in conflicts in other countries is a scary thought. In this future world, it's taken to another level. Each soldier is equipped with a built in camera on their helmut. Viewers back home can watch the events as they occur. Soldiers soon become media celebrities.   The ma...

The Crazy Action Continues 5

Last issue knocked me off my feet with the revelations and cliffhanger. With Barry Allen possessed by Parallax, what happens next?  The Good There is so much action in this book lately. I've been worried that Geoff Johns has a full work load with all his new responsibilities and the different issues he's writing. Silly me, the fast paced action and crazy happenings keep coming. Barry Allen possessed by Parallax, Hal Jordan directly challenging Parallax, the other Lantern Corps and....that myster...

The Next Men and John Byrne Return! 4

I've always been a big fan of John Byrne's writing and drawing. His creation, the Next Men return after 16 years.   The Good I had the opportunity to read an early copy of this issue and all I can say is 'wow.' When I first looked at the cover I felt like a kid again. As if it were fate, I had been going through some of my old comics and came across my Next Men comics. That played a part in getting me ready to jump into this issue.  The first couple pages could be a little confusing for new read...

Clearly My Favorite X-Book 10

Uncanny X-Force tracks down Apocalypse and fight his Horsemen...things didn't go so well. Will they survive long enough for the series to continue?  The Good We get a look at the origins of Apocalypse's Last Horsemen. Jerome Opena's art along with Dean White's colors do an amazing job in giving more than the average flashback feel. The Horsemen are ruthless and show they are the perfect opponents for the hardcore, don't hold back,  X-Force team.  Remender continues the extreme action we saw in t...

Time For a New Kind of Magic 3

What happens when a college kid is exposed to an ancient book of spells and attaches itself to him? We get a new hero in town.  The Good This one shot serves as an introduction to the character and the world he lives in. In the opening pages we get see a mysterious man and we're not sure what his intentions are. This is great set up as it builds up the suspense right from the beginning.   The main character is your typical college student but not necessarily a stereotypical portrayal of one. We ...

Time To Celebrate 100 Issues 3

It's hard to believe it's only been 100 issues. Fables celebrates the milestone issue with an issue that feels more like a mini-trade paperback instead of a comic book.  The Good This is what everything has been building up to. The epic battle against Mister Dark. Will Frau Tot...I mean Bellflower, be able to stop him in a magic duel to end all magic duels? If you've been waiting for this battle, you won't be disappointed. we really get to see what these two are made of. And just when you think ...

This Is All About Captain Boomerang 4

Hopefully you're not looking for any Barry Allen action here (or Francis Manapul). This is Captain Boomerang's story. Will it be enough to continue the awesome streak of this series?  The Good I had some doubts about this issue. We've all read stories about the bad guys. They've all done bad things but because Boomerang killed Tim Drake's father, he managed to raise himself to a new level of villainy. I can't even tell you how many stories I've seen with Captain Boomerang and the Rogues going up...

Interesting Story But Will It Have a Happy Ending? 1

What If? stories always show us those key moments with a major twist. Here we see what if Wolverine raised Daken.  The Good Right away, Leinil Francis Yu's cover makes you want to read this issue. Surprisingly I never wondered what it could've been like if Wolverine was able to raise Daken. How different would things have been? It's a great set up with a different direction for Wolverine. We also see some familiar faces show up along the way.  The Bad The problem with most What If? stories is th...

Doesn't Feel As Super As Last Issue 2

There's something going on with the vegetation in Smallville. With Poison Ivy on the scene, will Superboy fight her or...team up with here?  The Good It's up to Superboy to get to the bottom of things. There's something big and bad happening in Smallville and it may be more than he can handle, even with the help of Krypto and Simon. It's always good to see that there is more to Smallville than the Kent farm and the downtown area. The location of the main battle here gives Smallville more of a re...

Get Ready For A Wild Ride 10

Marvel's super spies are being targeted. When Hawkeye gets a list including Mockingbird and Black Widow, is it a tip or a trap?  The Good I was concerned and saddened when Hawkeye and Mockingbird was canceled. We do still have the same creative team here (and some of the same characters) so it's an easy transition. The issue starts out with a bang when we see a familiar looking costumed character doing some heavy duty killing. Hawkeye and Mockingbird are doing their best to work together to figu...

Time To Clean House (or at least the Avengers Mansion) 7

The New Avengers barely survived their magical battle. It's time to clean up and figure out who the heck is going to be on the team.  The Good There isn't a lot of action in this issue but it's always nice to be able to take a breather and allow the characters to reassess everything. The New Avengers not only have a mansion that needs to be rebuilt, they also have to look at their own team. We've already seen Hawkeye leave the team (since he was also on the regular Avengers team).  We also find ...

I Want To Like This Book But... 3

Heroes For Hire returns with a new modus operandi. With no set team roster, will this new direction work help the team and book be successful?  The Good The idea of not having a predetermined team makes sense. I like that the team will be assembled on the fly based on the events of the mission. This might not always work as the character seemingly in charge of Heroes For Hire, acting as Control, may not get the person they need. Each person is contacted and asked if they are available. The lives...

Is This Wolverine Comic The Best There Is? 7

Behold the release of another Wolverine comic. What makes this different is the fact that is is clearly not for kids.  The Good If you've read Charlie Huston's Moon Knight or his novels, you know he's a man that can put out some gritty comics. For a Wolverine comic with the subtitle The Best There Is, there had better be some grittiness to it. To add to the story, Juan Jose Ryp's crazy-overly-detailed art captures every single drop of blood when the violence begins. There is so much detail in th...

A Dark Tale From The Dark Knight's Past 6

An Untold Tale Not Long Ago featuring a bunch of Robins...getting killed.  The Good Normally I'm not thrilled with untold tales but from the image on the opening page of "Robin" lying dead, full of arrows, I felt this was going to be something different. How cool is it to see Renee Montoya as a Gotham City police officer once again or hear about Dick being in Bludhaven?   We also get some perspective from the citizens in Gotham. People are in awe and fear the urban legend of Batman. This makes i...

The End Is Indeed Near 0

Things have been crazy in the Buffyverse. Season 8 is almost over and it sure looks like it's going to go out with a bang.  The Good If you want action in your Buffy comics, you will not be disappointed. The last few issues have had intense fights and you can almost feel that the end it approaching. The gang is pretty much all here. Who would want to miss out on all of this? Unfortunately, everyone might not make it out in one piece. That's the beauty of the issue. If we're to buy this huge batt...

Oh Man, Did That Really Happen?!? 10

The now twice monthly Amazing Spider-Man arrives with a major shocker. What happens in this issue will blow you away.  The Good This issue has everything I could want in a Spider-Man comic. Lots of Spidey action, some crazy stuff with Hobgoblin, Black Cat, more Phil Urich and a tease with Mac Gargan. The action explodes from the very first page. There are indeed BIG things happening that justify the BIG TIME title. There is almost an epic feel to the story as we witness what you can definitely c...

Now I'm Excited for Issue #1 3

Out of the pages of Detective Comics, Batwoman is getting ready for her own series. J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman give us a taste of what's to come.  The Good Batwoman was always a character I wanted to like since she appeared in DC's 52. There was something about the stories in Detective Comics I couldn't get into even though I really admired Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams III. With this issue #0, we get a great (re)introduction of who she is and see what she's capable of. With the retu...

Dang I Love This Book 4

Barry Allen is on trial for murder in the 25th Century. This is the end of the arc...is it also the end for Barry?  The Good Geoff Johns and Francis Manapul...what can I saw about this team that I haven't already said. I don't want to come across as a gushing fanboy when it comes to these two but they continue to knock me off my feet every time they work together. While I'm not always crazy about time travel stories and the countless paradoxes they create (often with no resolution), this has bee...

Man-oh-Man 0

Hal Jordan has had his hands full trying to find the entities of the different lanterns. He's also had to make some strange alliances. It was only a matter of time until others started questioning his motives.  The Good Let me start out by saying, "Whoa!" This issue blew me away, not once, but twice. Even though this is the "Green Lantern" book, we're continuing to see several members of the other Lantern Corps. There are some crazy and interesting revelations about the Indigo Tribe. Even though...

Will Red Hulk Join the Avengers? 2

I don't care what people say, I liked reading about Red Hulk. Now that he's basically come to terms with who he has become, it could be very interesting to see him interacting on a team...if he survives.  The Good With the beginning of a new arc, we almost get a little breather after all the craziness of the Kang-Ultron Future war. We get to see mention of the disappearance of Attilan on Earth as well as a confrontation with Wonder Man and why he's so against the formation of the Avengers. It al...

What is Norman Going to do Next?!? 2

The biggest slimeball in the Marvel Universe now has a five issue limited series. Despite being locked away do you really think Norman is out of the game?  The Good One the first page Norman is sitting in his cell at the Raft while waiting to see if and what he'll be charged for. The patience he shows demonstrates how calculating he can be. Norman had a big plan during Dark Reign and this obviously isn't where he was supposed to end up. You get the impression that Norman would have contingency p...

Big Time Begins With a Bang 2

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Spider-Man. There's been a lot of push towards the new direction of Amazing Spider-Man. With "Big Time," the series is switching from being published three times a month to two and instead of a rotating team of writers, we now have one with Dan Slott. I have to admit I was a little skeptical with all the hoopla surrounding this issue before it's release.  The Good Wow. This is such a massive issue. If you look at the characters that appear on the issue page h...

Red Robin Teams Up With a Familiar Bat-character 3

This is it. This is the moment many have been waiting for. The return of a certain Bat-character that has been missing from the pages of comic books for too long. Just a note, if you're not already aware who this character is and haven't heard, there will be a spoiler mentioned.  The Good Cassandra Cain is back. You might recall a few issues back when Tim first showed his list of people he was keeping tabs on. Cassandra Cain was listed as being somewhere in Hong Kong. As you begin reading the fi...

Has The Plutonian Met His Match? 1

The Plutonian has been unstoppable since he turned to evil. Following the revelation last issue of a deal made with aliens in case Plutonian ever did turn, could this be the end of Plutonian's evil reign?  The Good There is some intense action going here. Even though I've been enjoying every issue of this title, I can't help but wonder how long the story can go on. We have this unstoppable evil guy going around killing and maiming. With this plan starting up that could stop the Plutonian, could ...

One Of My Favorite BOOM! Titles 0

The story of Max Damage, the former number one bad guy now turned good continues to keep me hooked month after month.  The Good Incorruptible and Irredeemable have both been stellar books from the beginning. Max Damage is still trying to do the right thing after Earth's most powerful hero turned on everyone. It may sound cliche but Mark Waid has proven for eleven issues now that it's far from that. We also see in this issue the art by Marcio Takara which I have to say I prefer over Horacio Domin...

Hellboy Teams Up With Animals...Excellent! 0

It might seem a little surprising to see Hellboy and the Beasts of Burden team up but once you get into it, it makes perfect sense.  The Good Hellboy and the Beasts of Burden both investigate the paranormal. Why not have a crossover with these two titles? There isn't a lot of story development leading up to why they are teaming up but it wasn't necessary. The meeting was believable and allows you to jump right into the story. Jill Thompson's art and colors give the feeling that each panel is a w...

Fun Mindless Entertainment 4

By now you should have heard about the movieRED starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Brian Cox, Helen Mirren, Richard Dryfuss and Mary-Louise Parker. Let's be clear, this movie has pretty much nothing to do with the comic by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner that "inspired" it. The movie deals with former CIA assassin and black operative, Frank Moses (in the comic his name was Paul Moses). While trying to find some semblance of a normal life since he's retired, he gets targeted fo...

Get Ready For A New Comic Book Experience 1

Stan Lee has joined forces with BOOM! Studios. The first title to hit the stands is Soldier Zero by Paul Cornell and Javier Pina. What can we expect with this new hero? Will this be something "new" or just another superhero?  The Good It's not often we see characters that are bound to using wheelchairs. I have to admit that when I first heard that the main character, Stuart Trautmann would be in one, I wondered if it was going to be too cliché. It turns out it's not. Leave it to Paul Cornell to ...

Bruce and Tim Side By Side Once Again? 1

There's a bunch of Bruce Wayne: The Road Home one-shots out this week, some of them are connected.  The Good The issue begins with Bruce Wayne's "White Casebook" and his thoughts of Tim (as Red Robin) in action. It's great to hear Bruce's thoughts and concerns as Tim continues his journey to the next level of his crime fighting career. The team of Fabian Nicieza and Ramon Bachs makes it feel like this is a regular issue of Red Robin rather than just a Red Robin one-shot.  There is also more on V...

Turok Returns to Comics 1

Turok returns to comics in Dark Horse's new familiar take on the characters.  The Good First issues often take pages to set up the story and characters. Here, we jump right into the action. It's not everyday you get to read a comic with people getting shot by arrows and stabbed by spears. If you're looking for action mixed with some violence, you will find it here, but not in an over-the-top presentation.  I only know Turok from the N64 video games and I assume we're witnessing the beginnig of h...

A True Work of Art 2

Get ready for a Batman story different from what you've read before.  The Good First of all, look at the list of creators: Ron Marz writing, Bernie Wrightson pencilng, Kevin Nowlan inking and Alex Sinclair doing the colors. It's an impressive list. Hopefully you are familiar with Bernie Wrightson's work. If not, you'll be in for an amazing treat. What we have here is a story told with full illustrations while Ron Marz provides the text for the story off to the side. You get to fully appreciate t...

Simply Put...This Is So Good 1

The second issue of Captain America: Patriot continues to blow me away, just as the first issue did. This is a series that definitely should not go unread or unnoticed.  The Good The story and art are phenomenal. I'm a big Captain America fan and I know he "disappeared" after he and Bucky faced Zemo. I know there were other Captain Americas to carry on the tradition as a symbol of hope but I never really thought I'd be interested in reading about their exploits. The story of the Patriot taking o...

A Surprising Terminator Comic 0

Let's be honest, Terminator comics are often hit or miss. They have provided some reading entertainment but I can't really recall any that felt as if it truly added anything to the Terminator mythos. Here comes another entry from Dark Horse written by Zack Whedon. What are the results.  The Good The idea of a comic that goes back to the time of the first Terminator movie seemed like a risky idea to me when I first heard it. There has been so many different takes on the main characters that I hav...

Steve Rogers Back As A 98-Pound Weakling?!? 0

Nooo! Say it isn't so. That vile Machinesmith turned Steve Rogers back to a 98 lb. weakling. How can this be?  The Good When I first started reading this, I was a little upset. I don't want to see "Captain America" turned back to a normal person. While I'm digging Bucky as the current Captain America, I still consider Steve as the Captain America. Silly me, I forgot that this was being written by Ed Brubaker. Ever since he started writing Captain America, he hasn't really let me down. Obviously ...

For $1, There's No Reason To Pass On This 0

Dark Horse is offering several issue one books for only $1. Makes total sense and it's an easy way for new readers to take a chance on a book they haven't checked out before.  The Good It's Groo the Wanderer. It's Sergio Aragones, Mark Evanier, Tom Luth and Stan Sakai. If you've ever read a Groo comic book, you know what to expect. This 'first issue' begins with the Minstrel telling a tale of Groo doing what Groo does best. Find out what happens when Groo uses his mind to convince others they sh...

A Good Comic For New and Old Readers 0

Magnus Robot Fighter has been around since the 60s. He's a character that I've known about but never gave a try. With the new comic by Jim Shooter and Bill Reinhold from Dark Horse Comics, now is the perfect time discover or rediscover Magnus.  The Good Not having read a Magnus Robot Fighter comic before, I had the impression that this would feel like a throwback to the comics from the old days. Jim Shooter does a great job in writing the comic characters and the world they're in. Shooter captur...

A Smile On My Face As Soon As I Opened It 2

Man oh man do I dig that Mike Allred art (with amazing colors by Laura Allred). But it can't be just about the art. Let's factor in the story as well.  The Good I could write this entire review just on the art and colors. I simply love that it's so different from everything else. Each character has their own look and feel. The colors combined with the shadows sets the tone for the story. The title may have "Zombie" in it but there are other "creatures" in this world. We see Horatio and Diogenes ...
