Respect the General of Krypton!
"..I promise you this: I... will always... be your monster..."
"..My name is Zod. And I have always loved monsters. They force us into action. They show us what we can be. They make us great.."
Zod hits as hard as any kryptonian, sometimes even harder because of his extensive martial arts training. Action Comic #983
Barring powerful strike, on the scan above he also reacted to Supergirl' bullrush. Shortly after they receive their powers, Kryptonians tend to enter a feral state, Zod repeatedly punched Martian Manhunter with enough force to knock him out cold. Steve Trevor even claimed that it nearly killed him. Superman/Wonder Woman #3
Dru-Zod was consistently portrayed as Superman' equal even when he was holding back. When severely weakend by prolonged imprisonment in phantom zone he has enough strenght to shatter the ground by stomping on it. Suicide Squad #3
The thing about current Zod and Faora is that the whole Superman is more powerful because he has been abosrbing yellow sun radiation since his birth, isn't really actual. When they received their powers, Apollo silently allowed them to grow stronger at much faster rate, so they reached level they wouldn't normally be able to in such short period of time. That's why Zod' statement is quite accurate:
"..Look at you . Completely unprepared for someone with your same abilities, but superior.."
Zod doesn't have to make up for his physical inferiority with ruthlesness and martial arts anymore. Heck, injured Zod could stalemate Clark while he was fighting without intention to kill. According to the general, losing Clark would be like losing Krypton all over again and so he was intentionally holding back. Superman/Wonder Woman #5
With this being said, feel free to carefully scale striking strenght from Clark or ask Superman experts ( *cough @lvenger *cough). As if his monstrous blows aren't enough, he can deliver them in various ways like a real soldier should do.
We could see glimpse of his power when he took down Hank Henshaw with a single precise strike.
In recent issue of Action Comic (#984), Zod earned one of his best striking feats when he sent Mongul into space with a single strike.
It actually looked like Mongul failed to react to the strike. He wasn't expecting it but to be fair Zod was in plain sight. On another occasion, Zod faced one of the most prominent lanterns: Hal Jordan, he quickly humiliated by crushing his hand and putting him down with a single strike:
Barring scaling from Clark and minor lifting feat, during Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #37 he displayed strength sufficient to effortlessly break out of Hal' constructs:
Moments later Zod, with utter ease, caught one of Jordan's strikes and crushed his hand. Double the feat because he also reacted and outfought Hal's despite his combat speed.
This scene might remind of another instance with Deathstroke but this time it actually isn't stupid, quite the opposite.
"..I do not wish to kill you Kal-El. Almost all of krypton is gone, killing you would be like losing our home all over again.."
Zod might not be the most skilled combatant in the DC universe but he is far from a rookie either. He displayed knowledge on several techniques and spent long part of his life training combat with the use of various weapons like guns and double edged sword. He honed his skill in real battles and in a training simulation:
Zod demonstrated his skill in a real battle against monster that could crush concentrate during his charge:
But let's focus on the most important aspect of close quarter combat, hand to hand. First and foremost Zod is skilled enough to quickly and precisely use a lock and break Clark' arm, overpowering him as a result.Superman/Wonder Woman #4
Feat from the next issue might use some context, but it should suffice to say that Zod was cheap shotted by a blast that wounded him and so Clark got his hand on him. What's worth noting is how Zod broke free from the hold. Open-palm strike, not fist strike, truth to be told the latter might set him free aswell but in such situation open palm is more appropriate simply because after the strike landed he could furthermore push thus making it easier to increase the distance. Zod then swiftly land a knee attack.
We could also seen him use such techniques as knifehand strikes, and had no problem with implementing kicks into his fighting style. Last but not least, as a child Zod could survive alone in a jungle inhabited by various deadly creatures.
".. I will not let you turn me from my purpose
If you know how fast is Superman then you more or less know how fast is Zod is. Kryptonians can fly and they can do it at really high speed. It allows them to attack an opponent from unexcepted angles, bullrush or simply exploit heat vision from safe distance.
One feat is worth mentioning though. At some point blind Clark fights several of his villains, he can hear or detect other opponents with his enhanced senses but it's impossible against Zod since according to Clark he moves like a ghost. Action Comic #982
Flight is always a great ability, it can either negate opponents ability to move in the air or allow user to outmaneuver grounded target.
".. Pathetic .."
This section should be combined with the one below, but this way thread looks more complex, guilty. Due to their physiology, Kryptonians are nearly invulnerable. Zod is no different in that regard and barring taking hits from Kal-El, he could withstand the blast that was compared to 1000 soviet soyuz rockets. Suicide Squad #17
As mentioned above he can take hits from heavy hitters and come out unscathed, barring brief recovery time. Superman/Wonder Woman #4
During his very first appearence he could take on Vibe' blast and Martian Manhunter bullrush and come out undamaged.
Even with some serious injury Zod could survive combined attack of Suicide Squad and Hank Henshaw:
Few more notable feats can be found in the section below. Meanwhile if you were brave enough to read this blog up to this point, please type KNEEL BEFORE ZOD, in the comment section to show respect for the general.
Pain Tolerance and Psychology
"..I'm lost in eternal darkness.."
Zod belongs to the top tier, when it comes to strenght of will, he possess one of the most disciplined minds on the planet and he has the showings to prove it.
In Suicide Squad #17 Zod defied Amanda Waller and showed her that nothing can control him, not even kryptonite bomb in his head. Do you remember that famous joke in which Superman shave himself with heat vision? Zod took the next step and opened his skull to remove the device.
As if its not enough, general could survive having a boomerant in his brain. It appears that kryptonians are just as durable in the inside. Another will power and durability feat comes from Action Comic #983, when he taunts and laughs at Clark' punches, showing him what a real kryptonian looks like.
Zod is ruthless, stubborn and intimidating. He won't hesitate to kill when he needs too. But the chain is only as strong as the weakest link. As a result Dru made sure that his mind is well protected against telepathic assault. In Action Comic #983 Zod prevented Blanque from reading his mind and revealed that he has undergone a training that allow him to create anti-psi shield.
".. You do not order your general.."
Well, it's not surprise that normal human will get anihilated. It's worth noting that heat vision could harm Eradicator, just before Zod easily finished him off. Suicide Squad #18
Ironically his best heat vision feat is hurting himself. To be fair heat vision hurt kryptonians before anyway but you get the point.
As seen during his encounter with Eradicator, Heat Vision can be used both offensively and defensively to throw an opponent away.
" I find this planet confusing.."
Zod possess brilliant strategic mind. Extensive military training and ability to actually use it in combat can come in handy, as seen when he organized Kal-El villains in a battle against Clark' allies. He intenionally established telepathic link via Blanque and coordinated them to achieve his goal.
He perception is top notch aswell, he quickly deduced that Superman is blind based on his eyes movement and overall behaviour.
And exploit the fact that he relies on his hearing, quite smart. Scans from Action Comic #983
