LIGHTSABER MASTERY

Disclaimer: As with Jaden Korr, and every other NJO character, I will be describing Desann’s fighing style using the three most prominent styles presented to us by Jedi Outcast, Academy, Book of Sith, and Campaign guides.

Due to his opening stance in his fights with Kyle Katarn, Apprenticeship under Luke Skywalker, and his own Apprentice's fighting style at the time, I've come to the conclusion that Desann was mainly a practitioner of the Medium style and the Fast Style. However, due to his involvement in training both the Empire Youths and Shadowtroopers that would form the bulk of the Reborn, it is highly likely that Desann possessed enough knowledge of the Strong Style, and all other forms to train his warriors to different levels of mastery.

Luke states he fought Desann and his Reborn troops at the valley, forcing them to retreat.

“I managed to scatter Desann, and his Reborn troops, and Rogue Squadron chased away their ships. For now the Valley’s effectively sealed off.”

The battle between the fallen Jedi is regarded as "furious"

In the end, Kyle chased the Dark Jedi to the temples of Luke's Jedi academy on Yavin 4, where he and Desann engaged in furious lightsaber battle for a final time. Only Kyle emerged alive from the conflict.

Despite his age, Desann, at the time of his training under Luke, has his powers grow, significantly

Desann and Hethrir both used the Valley of the Jedi to increase their power.

Hethrir increased his powers fourfold by absorbing energy from Jedi and Sith spirits. After gaining that power, the two Jedi were able to imbue others with the power of the Force."

An ability he likely learned as Jedi, Desann is capable of using the Force to heal his wounds

Force Illusions

Desann uses the Force to create duplicates of himself capable of fooling Katarn.

Desann’s Illusions once again toy with Katarn.

Fear

Desann is able to use this twisted ability to instill fear into others, an ability he likely coupled with Illusions.

Telekinesis

Desann uses the Force to break down a large structure with a gesture.

Desann uses Force Choke on Kyle Katarn.

Desann breaks through Luke’s Force Barrier and sends him flying into the air

During his final confrontation with Kyle Katarn, Desann is able to shake the foundation of an entire room, and cause the ceiling tiles to fall. Watch from 00:01 to 00:23

It's plausible that Desann was capable of shaking the foundation of that very room, as his power is capable of causing large portion of tiles to come crashing down.

Battle-Mind

Desann is capable of using Battle-Mind.

Dark Rage

Desann is capable of using the Dark Side to enhance his abilities.

Conclusion

Strength, Power, and Ambition, these three words define what Desann as a character. Unlike most fallen Jedi, Desann's abilities flourished under the guidance of the Dark Side even prior to him using the Valley of the Jedi's legendary power, Desann was already of a Force to be reckoned with, and with the Valley at his disposal, he became a threat that even Luke was cautious with. While not a Sith Lord, like Lumiya, nor a highly trained Jedi/Inquisitor like Jerec, Desann, with his limited training was still able of achieving a level of power and influence that was labeled as a galactic threat. Though he was no match for Katarn, one cannot help but wonder what would have happen if Desann had received proper training in the Dark Side? I, for one, shudder at the thought.
