A Mixed Bag in terms of Quality 0

This volume is more difficult to review, because instead of containing one united story it contains four smaller, independent ones. Therefore, I’ll give my thoughts on each story independently, before sharing my opinion on the volume as a whole:Final Crisis #1: Director’s Cut is an interesting, but not essential read. The uncoloured version of the first issue of Final Crisis didn’t do much for me, as I’d already read the issue in its final form, but seeing the original script offered a couple ne...

Neil Gaiman Does It Again 0

As a huge fan of both Neil Gaiman and Batman, I was excited going into this story, and in my opinion it did not disappoint one bit. Gaiman is one of the most imaginative writers out there, and it is clear that he is both very familiar with Batman and that he has a great love for the character. The style of the story, in which various characters like Selina Kyle, Alfred, Dick Grayson, the Joker and others tell their versions of the “death” of Batman, may be off-putting to some but I personally qu...

Very Unconventional, Ambitious and Often Brilliant 1

Final Crisis is not your average superhero story. In fact, it’s one of the most ambitious comic book stories ever attempted. If you read it through once and find it confusing, then that’s alright because a good deal of what Morrison writes is so unconventional. If you’re willing to be patient, open-minded to some rather unusual concepts and ideas and perhaps most importantly re-read certain sections or even the entire story if need be, then it can be a very complex and rewarding experience. Some...

OK, But Not Great 0

Until I read Geoff Johns' Action Comics story Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes, I'd never really understood the appeal of the Legion. In that story, however, Johns was able to tell a tale that had a strong focus on character, allowing readers to get to know each character individually and get a handle on who they were, an incredibly important thing to do when dealing with a team like the Legion that has so many characters. While Johns had his moments in this story, I felt he was unable to...

The Rogues Take Center Stage 1

One of the things I loved the most about Geoff Johns' run on the Flash was his ability to write the Rogues, developing each one as a complex and interesting character individually while also demonstrating why these villains, unlike the vast majority of comic book villains, were willing to put up with each other and work together. In this story, Johns revisits the Rogues in a worthwhile addition to his previous work, demonstrating that even without the Flash, the Rogues are strong enough characte...

More Great Work from Greg Rucka 1

Greg Rucka has produced some great work for DC, including Gotham Central, Detective Comics and 52 (along with Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns and Mark Waid). Not only does this story act as a tie-in to Final Crisis, it brings in many of the characters and ideas Rucka has formed throughout his previous work, such as Crispus Allen (now the Spectre), Renee Montoya (now the Question), Kate Kane (Batwoman), the Religion of Crime, the Crime Bible and Cain. I'd recommend reading as many of these as possibl...
