Accolades

Darth Maul is one of the most skilled Sith Lord in the history.

One of the most skilled and deadly warriors in Sith history, Darth Sidious' apprentice took part in the first encounter between jedi knight and sith warrior for more than 1,000 years in the battle for Naboo.

- Star Wars: Fact Files #001 (2001)

Darth Maul is one of the most highly trained Sith Lord in the history.

''He was one of the most highly trained Sith in the history of the order.''

- Star Wars: Fact Files #001 (2001)

Darth Maul's skills as a warrior unparalleled.

''His skills as a warrior were nonpareil.''

- Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter

Darth Sidious considers that Darth Maul has formidable Dark Side powers.

''The battle began in the hangar. Darth Maul activated his double-ended lightsaber, a weapon he fashioned himself under my supervision. In his hands this weapon was flawless - or so I thought. He made the Jedi run. They had to use everything they knew and more to meet his skill. They went at him, two on one, and they could not defeat him. No doubt Maul used his formidable dark powers to blunt their use of the Force.''

- Episode I Journal: Darth Maul

Maul's secret Sith knowledge makes him almost invincible.

''Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, for their part, recognize Darth Maul as the most dangerous foe they have ever faced: a Sith Lord with not only training to equal their own but Sith secrets that could make him all but invincible in battle.''

- Star Wars Miniatures Ultimate Missions: Clone Strike

According to both Talzin and the Emperor, Darth Maul is strong in the Force.

Palpatine : “I’m aware that the Jedi have been continuing to harass Trezza for creating assassins and proxy armies, so consider what might have happened had a Jedi been present during the exercise. A Jedi would not only have grasped that you are strong in the Force, but that you have received training in the dark arts, endangering my position.

(...)

She (Mother Talzin) appraised him. “Very revealing. A few moments ago I was thinking that I erred in coming so far and in risking so much to return you to your clan brothers. And yet I sense that you are strong in the Force.

- Darth Maul: Restraint

Maul has been stated to be strong in the Force.

At a few month’s old, Darth Sidious senses that Maul is strong in the Force, and subsequently strong enough to be of use to him.

This one is strong in the Force. In the right hands, he can become a powerful asset.

Palpatine studied the bundle of life he held. That the Force was strong in the infant was reason enough not to allow him to wander about unprotected, and perhaps fall into the hands of the Jedi.

- Darth Plagueis Novel

Darth Maul, as an apprentice, has been considered to be a significant lost to the Emperor.

Soon after his departure, though Count Dooku is visited by the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Sidious. The loss of Sith Lord's former apprentice, Darth Maul, motivates Sidious to seek out a new apprentice, a convert who already has the training he needs - and who can be turned to the Dark Side.

Darth Sidious has chosen and raised Darth Maul as a successor.

''The man who had taken the young Maul from a backwater planet and raised him to be his successor. He owed Darth Sidious everything.''

- Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter

The Emperor has considered him as his successor.

''For all Darth Sidious’s talk of his role as his apprentice and eventual successor, Maul still felt precious little connection to the Sith grand plan for the galaxy and his place within it. At the Dark Lord’s command, he’d spent years training on Orsis and then on Coruscant in the LiMerge Building, enduring years of privation and the harshest imaginable discipline while awaiting his Master’s visits.''

- Maul: Lockdown

Darth Sidious considers Darth Maul as ''One Being Army''.

Sidious approached him, his face contorted in anger. “And if by some marvel Garyn had managed to escape, or even defeat the one-being army that is Darth Maul, what repercussions might we be facing, apprentice?”

- Darth Plagueis Novel

After his return in the Clone Wars, Darth Maul's becomes more powerful in every aspect.

''Maul had grown more powerful since the last time he’d been in Sidious’s presence, before the Neimoidian invasion of Naboo had turned disastrous and Obi-Wan had bested him inside the Theed power core. His hermitage on Lotho Minor, his lessons on Unbara, his restoration by Mother Talzin, and his training of Savage had all strengthened him, made him a more worthy vessel for the Dark Side to fill with its power.''

- Darth Maul: Shadow Conspiracy

Master Salmara claims that Darth Maul consumed by the ''Hatred'', and she says that the Sith Lord may have grown even more powerful.

Salmara : ''Darth Maul is being consumed by hatred. I imagine this hatred-- This rage-- Fueled him and kept him alive... Coming back from near death may have made the Sith Lord stronger... And even more dangerous.''

- Darth Maul: Death Sentence

- Star Wars Tales 09: Resurrection

Lightsaber Combat

Darth Sidious leaves Darth Maul for a month without any food, and while Maul was heavily wounded, he manages to leap forward and bites Darth Sidious's hand, bleeds him.

''Sidious shifted like a liquid shadow, maneuvering around his apprentice. Maul was suddenly up against the wall, gasping for breath as his vision blurred. His strength was evaporating. He turned fast to see Sidious. Sidious lashed out with his lightsaber. Maul parried the blow, but then his lightsaber suddenly flew from his hand.

As Maul heard his lightsaber deactivate and clatter across the cave's floor, Sidious raised his own lightsaber and advanced. Maul knew he was about to die, but he did not cringe. As Sidious swung his lightsaber.

Maul leaped forward, grabbed Sidious's wrist, and sank his teeth into his hand. Maul tasted blood and spat it back at Sidious.''

- Wrath of Darth Maul

Darth Plagueis asks that did you really fought him with serious way, and Darth Sidious approves that Darth Maul ''fought well''.

''Plagueis looked over his shoulder, his eyes narrowed in question. “You’ve fought him in a serious way?” Reconstructed vocal chords and trachea imparted a metallic quality to his voice, as if he were speaking through an enunciator. “I stranded him on Hypori for a month without food and with only a horde of assassin droids for company. Then I returned to goad and challenge him. All things considered, he fought well, even after I deprived him of his lightsaber. He wanted to kill me, but was prepared to die at my hand.”

- Darth Plagueis Novel

Maul almost defeats Sidious.

''Maul's final test as a Sith apprentice occurred on an isolated Outer Rim World. Abandoned there by Darth Sidious, he was told that he had to survive on his own until Sidious returned a month later, all the while being hunted by hordes of deadly assassin droids. Maul fought as best as he could, but exhaustion and hunger finally took their toll, and one of the tireless droids finally wounded him badly enough that he felt he could not go on.

At that point, Darth Sidious returned and challenged his apprentice to a lightsaber duel, telling Maul that he had secretly been training a second apprentice in case Maul failed his final test-which, by failing to kill Sidious in the duel, he just had.

Anger and hatred welled up in Maul, and he drew renewed strength from the dark side. Hurling himself at Darth Sidious, he nearly bested his master with a flurry of deadly lightsaber blows. Sidious barely deflected them all. Eventually Maul spent his fury, and Darth Sidious still stood. Maul prepared himself for death-but Sidious only laughed. By giving in to his rage and hatred to kill his own master-by wanting to kill his own master-Maul had in fact passed the final test. Now he was a Sith Lord-Darth Maul, Dark Lord of the Sith.''

- The Darkside Sourcebook

Darth Plagueis acknowledges Darth Maul's lightsaber mastery.

- Episode I Journal: Darth Maul

Darth Maul has fully mastered the double-bladed lightsaber.

''Charging Wampa, Rancor Rising, Dancing Dragon-snake, and many more. He had practiced gymnastics in environments ranging from zero-g to gravity fields twice that of Coruscant's. He had mastered the intricate and dangerous use of the double bladed lightsaber.''

Your right arm is slowing you down. Even your weapon is betraying you.”

Maul kept coming, relying more and more on his left arm, saving the right for when he’d need it most.

(...)

“Jar’Kai,” Maul snarled, deflecting her assault on reflex. “Predictable.”

He swung the lightsaber down, but at that moment the corridor shook again, jerking sideways, throwing them both off. Vosa recovered first, darting back, again too quick, and the speed with which she evaded his attack only inflamed the rage inside

Maul’s mind, stoking his wrath until it crystallized into a kind of malignant grace. Now he gripped the lightsaber in both arms, forcing his damaged right arm into service and gripping the hilt of his saber with his full strength. It was time for Juyo, the Way of the Vornskr—the last of the Seven Forms. He seized upon it eagerly, allowing himself to be swept up in the chaotic frontal assault of thrusts, slashes, and jabs. Darting backward into a desperate evasive measure, Vosa whirled one of her blades behind her, hacking loose a massive shelf of surgical instruments from its place on the wall, and with a swing of the hand she used a Force push to fire them at him in a glinting storm of steel. Maul ducked the flying instruments and bobbed back up with a silent snarl. In his mind, the duel was all but over—his opponent was now dragging out the inevitable moment of defeat in a series of small humiliations. By turning to such diversionary tactics, Vosa had all but admitted that she was no match for the erratic staccato blows that he was delivering, seemingly from everywhere, all at once.

''A look of eagerness took shape on Maul’s fearsome face. Sidious walked to him and placed his hands atop Maul’s shoulders. “You will be facing many skilled opponents, my apprentice. Darnada’s Twi’lek bodyguard, Sinya; Garyn himself, who has some strength in the Force; and Garyn’s chief protector, Mighella, who is a Nightsister and will immediately identify you as a Nightbrother.”

“Black Sun is in utter disorder,” Palpatine told HegoDamask as they strolled among the sightseers that crowded Monument Plaza. Hundreds were clustered around the summit of Umate, which jutted from the center of the bowl-shaped park, and mixed-being groups of others were trailing tour guides toward the old Senate agora or the Galactic Museum. “Prince Xixor and Sise Fromm will inherit the dregs.”

“Again, the Zabrak proves his value,” Damask said. “You trained him well.”

''The Jedi was obviously a master of the teras kasi fighting arts, as well, judging by the smooth way he parried and counterattacked. Still, within the first few moments of the engagement, Darth Maul knew that he himself was the superior fighter. He could tell that the Jedi knew it, too, but Maul also knew that it didn't matter. The Jedi was committed to stopping the Sith, or at the very least slowing him down enough to let the others get away, even if it meant giving his own life to do so.

(...)

Darth Maul had seen the grim realization in the eyes of his foe: the knowledge that the Twi'lek could not defeat his adversary. Once defeat was conceded in the mind, its reality was inevitable. It was only a matter of time. He pressed his attack to an even higher intensity, driving the Jedi back toward his speeder bike, intending to pin him between the dual-bladed lightsaber and the bike. With his movements thus constricted, it would be mere moments before the Twi'lek's ten-tacled head was separated from his neck. But then he saw the desperation in the other's face suddenly give way to realization, and then to triumph.''

It stood almost three meters tall, its thick fur matted with filth, grease, and blood. One of its horns had snapped on midshaft, creating a jagged ocher-colored dagger that curled only halfway around the right side of its head. Across its chest and abdomen, great swaths and patches of its white pelt had been ripped away to expose a puckered landscape of scar tissue— no doubt the results of previous battles. Its lips wrinkled back to reveal rows of razor-sharp teeth, and spittle new as it unleashed a bellow of hungry, frustrated rage and jerked at its restraints. Maul stood his ground.

(...)

Summoning whatever remained of his strength, Maul fired himself at the beast. Hooking his hands into claws, he plunged them through its fur, ripping into the soft tissue of its torso. ''Maul recoiled, but it was too late.With a jolt, his vision was gone, burying him in instant darkness. This was the second time in as many seconds that the thing had caught him of guard, and now he knew why: the creature was somehow cut of from the Force, utterly detached from the deep field of heightened sensitivity from which he was constantly drawing information about his surroundings.

The intuitive sensory abilities that he took for granted in any normal battle were simply not there.An acidic heaviness took hold of his optic nerves like a slow drip, seeping in, sinking deep, and he realized that he could already feel the poison taking control, spreading out in concentric layers of numbness through the muscle and tissue of his face. Now the thing’s shrieking laughter was everywhere. Willful.Triumphant.You must end this now.

Maul straightened. The voice in his head was his own, an austere evocation of his own training. But the cadence was unmistakably his Master’s—an echo of pitiless instruction, hours, days, years of unyielding pain and discipline.Sidious was never far from him. The evocation of the Sith Lord’s presence here snapped him back instantly into the moment with total clarity. Reaching up through blindness,Maul took hold of the serpent, grappling with its fully extendedlength.

Somewhere in the void he could feel the rippling leathery sinew of the staff looping around his neck, felt the hundreds of small muscles twisting and constricting over his windpipe, pinching on his airway like a living noose. The nextfew seconds would be crucial.He flexed, bent his head, and jerked it forward, but the thingwould not release. It kept encircling him, looping round and round, defying every attempt to take holdof it. Maul willed himself to be absolutely still, a study in perfect rigidity, allowing the serpent, in its moment of fatal overconfidence, to draw tighter still, stretching itself until he sensed its head coming back around in front of him once more. Still he waited. Above it all he could smell his opponent’s fetid stench, could feel the claws of his opponentraking his skin, twisting into his face, gouging for purchase. It shrieked at him, and this time the cry was pure victory, what might even have been laughter. Starved, insane.

A warrior with nothing to lose. You are no warrior, Maul thought. You know nothing of the dark side. The moment had come. He grasped the head of the serpent-staff, seizing its blunt nose and fanged mouth. His fingers took hold of its distended upper part, twisting, wrenching, until he tore the serpent’s head on its body with a moist and meaty pop. The results were instantaneous. With a twitching galvanic shudder, the snake loosened and fell slack, the coils already beginning to slide from his neck, and Maul allowed himself a single, unobstructed breath before finishing his work here.

Somewhere in front of him, the attacker had already responded to the death of his weapon with a howl of cheated rage. Maul no longer heard it. Primal as it was, it was stillonly emotion, a cry of weakness no more instructive or relevant than the pain he’d willed away moments earlier. He had no more use for it now than he ever did. He did, however, take advantage of his opponent’s scream just long enough to reach into its open mouth, feeling the moist warmth of its breath on his hand as he retrieved his tooth, plucking it from the thing’s gums. Holding the mouth agape, Maul crammed the serpent’s severed head inside, then clamped the gray lips tight to keep the snake’s head from falling out.

He ripped three of the larger piercings from the thing’s right arm and jammed them upward through the lips, bending them back into barbed hooks and fastening the mouth shut with the serpent’s head still trapped inside. With his hands flattened against those lips, Maul could feel the head twitching around inside the mouth, sinking its fangs inreflexively, squirting out venom while his attacker jerked andspasmed and tried in vain to scream. End it.VStill sightless, now holding his opponent at arm’s length, Maul inclined his own head down. He thrust forward, driving his horns into the thing’s sagging eyes, feeling them crushed to jelly against his scalp. The spasms stopped, and Maul stepped back, releasing the body, allowing it to collapse at his feet.''

- Maul: Lockdown

Darth Maul kills a four meter tall Deathspine Varactyl (a giant Lizard) with his bare hands. Rips its skull. Demonstrates a brute-force that never seen before.

''What he saw defied all expectation—an orange-skinned Deathspine varactyl, four meters high, came bursting forth into the concourse, its tail thrashing and whipping the air. The bird-lizard was shrieking and hooting wildly, slamming its body against the far wall, and immediately Strabo understood why.

(...)

But the redskinned inmate hung on with a kind of brute-force determination that Strabo had never seen before in any species. He was suddenly grateful that he’d decided not to defy Jagannath’s orders to come here— and glad that he’d never had to face the Zabrak in a bout. By now the entire prison was responding to the disruption. Guards’ boots were pounding way up the hall.

What’s he doing? Why is he— A blur of activity snapped Strabo’s attention forward again. Jagannath had managed to grip the varactyl by its crest and wrenched its armorplated skull hard to the right, slamming it directly into one of the steam pipes along the far wall. The creature shrieked again—a wailing mournful cry that turned out to be its swan song. The steam pipe burst apart, shooting a thick, scalding blast of focused heat directly into the thing’s face, boiling its flesh and scalding its eyeballs in their sockets. The effect was immediate. Strabo’s nostrils stung with the stench of burned feathers and flash-fried skin as the varactyl’s flesh peeled back to expose the thickly plated vault of its cranium. Its body collapsed with the Zabrak still astride it. “What happened?” somebody asked. “Lizard broke loose,” Izhsmash muttered. “Jagannath stopped it.” “Yeah, I guess he did.” In front of him, Jagannath had taken hold of the varactyl’s boiled skull. With a final jerk, he snapped it completely free from its neck and yanked it upward.''

- Maul: Lockdown

Darth Maul defeats a giant spider creature (Spydr) with his physical abilities.

''Maul was considering whether to jump the chasm or scale the ceiling when he noticed a mammoth Spydr clinging to the cavern wall behind him.

When the Spydr crawled closer, Maul felt his fingers begin to lose their grip. When the Spydr was within range, Maul swung both of his legs forward and kicked the creature in the head.The injured Spyder screeched and sprayed thick web at Darth Maul. The Sith Lord released his right hand, grabbed the sprayed strand, and gave a sharp pull. The Spyder did not sever it's connection to the web in time and suddenly found itself being torn from the ceiling to Maul's tug. Maul let go of the strand and watched the Spydr plummet into the chasm.''

Darth Maul resists to the claw slash of a four meter tall Varactyle (Giant lizard).

''Directly in front of him, the birdlizard bucked and swung itself 180 degrees around, braying all the louder as it tried to throw Jagannath from his perch. Its hind leg came forward, hooking one clawlike foot into the Zabrak’s torso and slashing his skin.''

- Maul: Lockdown

Resists to the claw slash from a three meter tall Wampa. Wampas have enhanced strength.

''Maul leapt upward, dodging the initial attack—but the creature’s massive arm swung around as it passed, its claws raking his back, ripping through flesh to gouge deep into the muscle along his spine. Maul felt his breath sucked from his lungs. A cruel, hot spike—even now he refused to think of it as pain— took hold of that entire side of his body, settling deep inside his nerve endings. The sudden smell of his own blood, sharp and coppery, filled the cell. Ducking low and then jumping for the ceiling, he felt hot liquid splashing down his leg, streaking the floor beneath his feet. He skidded, colliding with the wall in front of him.''

Both his hearts were thudding faster, pounding through his entire body in an attempt to circulate any remaining air. Blackness crowded in around the edges of his vision, threatening to bury his consciousness beneath an avalanche of oxygen debt. When the other inmate had first swum at him, he had slammed Maul in the diaphragm, driving out the breath he’d inhaled just before going down for the last time. Maul swirled around, pulling himself down by the zip-ties that fastened his ankles, coiling down alongside the submerged bench.''

Darth Maul resists to the intense heat, which is hot enough to roast his own flesh.

''Maul cursed, the anger rising up inside him from wherever it lived and toiled endlessly. Tightening his grip on the makeshift tool, he started working again on the hatch, forcing himself to take his time, fighting to ignore the suffocating heat, the baked air that filled his lungs, as if he were drawing breath directly from a blast furnace. He fixed his gaze straight up. The hatch itself, an unremarkable twelve-by-eighteen-centimeter rectangle, had become his entire world.

He clenched his teeth, the heat very close to him now, pressing in from all sides, clinging to him like a second skin. By now the walls had become scalding steel plates, burning the palm of his hand and the fingers holding him in place. The inside of his mouth felt cool by comparison. A drop of sweat hit the floor and he realized that he could actually hear it sizzle. If the temperature kept going up like this, he guessed that he might have another minute or two before he blacked out from heat prostration, and then— He kept working. There was an odd, meaty smell rising up around him, and when his blistered palm shifted slightly on the wall, he realized that it was his own flesh beginning to roast. Master. I will not fail. He breathed in, breathed out. An odd, narcotic dizziness had started to take hold of him, and he reached down deep into whatever remained of his consciousness, forcing himself to focus. He needed to find Eogan Truax. If he could just— All at once, the hatch popped open. Cool air rushed down from above in a blessed, invigorating cloud, and Maul dropped the steel plate to the floor and scrambled up through the hatchway, into the near-darkness.''

Darth Maul used the Force to lift a heavy boulder from a pile of rubble. Maul had used the Sith Infiltrator's sensors to scan the fortress ruins for any sign of C-3PX. Now, Maul found himself sifting through the area of what had been a chamber near the fortress's dungeon. Maul did not watch the boulder as it levitated away through the air, and he ignored the loud thud, eight meters away, that sounded as he released the boulder from his power.

Now let's remember what their Sith Master said about Maul and Dooku;

No Caption Provided

Sidious : ''Darth Maul was a loss, but Darth Tyranus... He was a proton torpedo.''

Source: Darth Vader #20

One was a ''loss'' and the other one was a ''proton torpedo''. Despite losing both, Dooku was always meant to be a placeholder while Maul wasn't.

This is a very important evidence towards how important Maul was in the Sith order, unlike Dooku, Maul was meant to be a successor, thus his training was more important than Dooku's.

Sidious states that Maul's skill as a sword master is peerless;

Sidious : ''Your skill as a sword master is peerless.''

Source: Darth Maul: Saboteur

Another source states that Dooku has never been the true Sith apprentice.

''Count Dooku knows that he has been deceived not just today, but for many, many years. That he has never been the true apprentice. That he has never been the heir to the power of the Sith.''

Source: Revenge of the Sith Novel

Dooku himself admits that Maul is a ''Great Sith Lord''.

Dooku : ''I foresee we will do great things together, I shall teach you the ways of the Dark Side. Soon, your powers will rival that of the great Sith Lord Darth Maul.''

Source: The Clone Wars: Season 3 Episode 13

And what Maul thinks about Dooku?

Maul: ''You're Dooku... The Jedi betrayer? I've heard much of you since my rebirth. I expected... more.''

Source: Son of Dathomir #1

In another issue, Maul asks from Dooku to become his apprentice.

Maul: ''You abandoned the Jedi when you understood the Sith were gaining power. Now I suggest you abandon Sidious and serve me.''

Dooku: ''Do you really believe there is any power in the galaxy that can stand against my lord?''

Source: Son of Dathomir #3

Dave Filoni states that Maul is in the ''Vader realm''.

Dave Filoni : ''Maul is a super dangerous threat. Because he has been trained for years. He’s really adept. So he’s kind of in the Vader realm. He’s well trained by Sidious in all types of Sith ways. Not the least of which is manipulation.''

Source: Rebel Force Radio Interview

Let's see why Maul ranks better than Dooku.

Nick Gillard's tiering system for TPM Maul;

Nick Gillard : ''And somebody like Kit Fisto is 7. I did take it to 8 and 9. But not many people know that. 8 and 9 is cheat.''

''Obi-Wan has gone up one level from Episode I to Episode III (7 to 8), but it’s a huge jump from one level to another. So Obi-Wan is 8. Yoda is 9. Mace is 8 bordering on 9. Dooku & Maul (TPM) are 8, but there is a huge difference inside the numbers themselves. It's not about how well they fight, it's about how well they learned.''

Source: Danger-inc.com, Theforce.net, Saberproject

Maul has become more powerful after TPM.

''Maul had grown more powerful since the last time he’d been in Sidious’s presence, before the Neimoidian invasion of Naboo had turned disastrous and Obi-Wan had bested him inside the Theed power core. His hermitage on Lotho Minor, his lessons on Unbara, his restoration by Mother Talzin, and his training of Savage had all strengthened him, made him a more worthy vessel for the dark side to fill with its power.

But strong as he had become, Maul found himself in awe of Sidious.''

Source: Shadow Conspiracy

And since the source takes place after Maul's revival, it considers Maul's power growth as well.

Let's see what the Author of Son of Dathomir comic said about Maul vs. Dooku duel before;

Barlow : ''Hmm. 6/10 sounds good. Maybe even 7/10—'cause Maul won't quit until he's completely out. That's just my opinion, though.''

Source: Twitter.com/Jeremy_Barlow/status/521480966431584256

The reason why Barlow believes that Maul defeats Dooku 7/10, because ''he won't quit until he's completely out.'' .

That never changes, even after 20 years, Maul finds a hiding Ben Kenobi on the desert only by his sheer will and his persistence, and by using the Sith Holocron and manipulating Ezra Bridger.

Ben Kenobi : ''One doesn't survive as long as I've by being foolish or unprepared. Maul is an old adversary, and a persistent one at that.''

Source: Star Wars Rebels: Season 3 Episode 20

Drawing Ben Kenobi out by ''altering the course of many things'', which is imo, was just a tip of an iceberg when it comes to Maul's capabilities as a Sith.

Ben Kenobi: ''They didn't. Maul did. Maul used your desire to do good, to deceive you. And in doing so, he has altered the course of many things. He knows your fears, your heart, and he manipulated the truth which has led you here. Where you should had never have been.''

Source: Star Wars Rebels: Season 3 Episode 20

This is not the only reason why Maul's knowledge of the Dark Side is superior to Dooku, not only he has shown superior manipulative skills, he has done something that surprises even Vader on Malachor.

Vader: ''You have unlocked the secret of the Temple. How did you accomplish this?''

Source: Star Wars Rebels: Season 2 Episode 22

Of course, this was all Maul's doing, and his plan was going to work if he didn't underestimate the Blind Kanan and his extreme amplification through the Force (a possible oneness).

(Btw, we can note that finding Kenobi is also a something that would impress Vader a lot, considering Vader never did that with all of his time and despite having all the resources of the Empire, Maul finds Kenobi in a very short time by using the Sith holocrons and the Dark Side magicks.)

Even after facing a near-death situation after getting pushed back from the temple by an extremely amped / oneness attained Kanan Jarrus,

Freddie Prinze Jr. :''Kanan vs. the Grand Inquisitor, that's Kanan releasing his fear and his attachment, and sort of being like water. This is a Force overpowering moment.''

''So for that moment between the two of them, that's a Force explosion. Kanan isn't controlling that, that's the Force dictating what's going to happen to him.''

Maul is still not defeated by the extremely amped Kanan Jarrus, and he steals Vader's ship and leaves Malachor.

For the people who are underestimating Kanan's Force potential, his death was important enough the draw the attention of even the Emperor;

Btw, this hype is coming from Filoni, who we know he has some disliking about Darth Maul, and Filoni said Grand Inquisitor is close to Ventress before.

He deflects multiple blaster bolts from Sabine, Zeb and Hera when he was turned upside down. A very vulnerable position for a sharpshooter like Sabine.

Maul can contend with Vader according to the source, not only with Sidious.

Filoni said Maul is in the Vader realm before, and he also states that Maul has the same type of focus that Vader has;

Dave Filoni : ''The Force is what holding his body together...''

''The Sith are consumed with never wanting to die. It's a completely physical thing to them. There is no afterlife for them. Everything exists in the now. They have to stay alive. They fear death more than anyone. That's what makes them so twisted and evil. So Vader holds on to life at the edge of the lava flow, because he is such a condemned for Obi-Wan, such an anger for whose happens in his life. And that same type of focus, hatred what sustains Maul.''

First of all, let's remember what they said about Adult Ahsoka's skills before ;

Prinze : ''I would put say is top 3, 4 as far as fighting , combat skills Jedi of all time.''

Source: Collider Videos

Filoni : ''We all felt that Ahsoka, the only person that could really match her in this time period, blow for blow, would be Vader or the Emperor.''

Source: SW.com

And we know, Vader at this time of period, is more powerful than Anakin, especially more powerful than TCW S4 Anakin and even he can choke Dooku during the duel;

Vader becomes far more powerful than TCW S4 Anakin;

"His injuries had deformed his body, left it broken, but they'd perfected his spirit, strengthening his connection to the Force. Suffering had birthed insight."

Source: Lords of the Sith

This is 5 years after the RotS. It took only 5 years for Vader to become more powerful than his RotS Anakin self, and he was much more powerful than TCW S4 Anakin when he dueled with Ahsoka.

Source: Rebels Season 2 Episode 22

Considering Ahsoka's competitive duel with Vader, (which is against a more powerful opponent than Dooku has ever faced) it's obvious that Dooku couldn't even replicate what Ahsoka did against Vader, and he would be overpowered easier against Vader who also ranks much better than Dooku on the top 5 red-lightsaber users list.

And unlike Dooku, why Maul has better portrayal than Adult Ahsoka?

Evidence on Maul > Adult Ahsoka #1

''Kanan agrees to split the group up, the logical choice pairing Maul with the weakest of the Jedi''

Source: Sw.com

- Maul matched with the weakest.

The logical choice to match Ezra with the strongest fighter, who is Maul. It's the basic logic that says Maul was more powerful than Adult Ahsoka.

Evidence on Maul > Adult Ahsoka #2

Maul's superior portrayal against 3 Inquisitors, even if you disagree with that statement, it's easy to figure out that Maul was stronger than Adult Ahsoka;

He takes on 3 Inquisitors with ease, kicking them one by one, which is a feat that Adult Ahsoka couldn't do.

Evidence on Maul > Adult Ahsoka #3

Maul senses Vader in the Force, before Ahsoka could.

No Caption Provided

Considering Ahsoka's relationship with Vader, she could've sensed Vader's presence earlier than Maul. However Maul senses Vader first, which suggests that Maul's Force powers were greater than Ahsoka's.

Another example on this how he easily kills the Inquisitor Seventh Sister with the Force.

All these evidences suggest that Maul was more formidable than Adult Ahsoka, and he would perform even better against Vader, who we already know more powerful than Dooku even when he was weaker as of Anakin the TCW / RotS.

Summary for the Maul > Dooku:

Other than the list which says Maul > Dooku,

  • Not only Maul's dark-side knowledge, and his TP showings and his Sith holocron knowledge was better, he has better physicality and sheer will.
  • Sidious stated that Maul was a loss while Dooku was a proton torpedo.
  • Maul has been stated to be in the Vader realm.
  • Maul portrayed better than Adult Ahsoka (who contended with Vader).
  • Maul portrayed better than Dooku against Mace Windu.
  • Maul dominated TCW S4 Kenobi in a duel.
  • Maul kicked Sidious in a duel.
  • Maul portrayed better than Dooku against Savage Opress.

-Arguments for the Ben Kenobi duel-

First of all, let's remember what Kenobi says about Dooku's skills;

No Caption Provided

"Come on, then, Kenobi! Come for me!" he said. "I have been trained in your Jedi arts by Lord Tyranus himself."

"Do you mean Count Dooku? What a curious coincidence," Obi-Wan said with a deceptively pleasant smile. "I trained the man who killed him."

With a convulsive snarl, Grievous lunged.''

Source: Revenge of the Sith Novelization

Joking aside, let's see what happened after 17 years between Maul and Kenobi;

First of all, let's debunk that Filoni's stupid statement first;

Debunking the Filoni's earlier statement

''I wanted to create a lot of similarities in the way the fight happened and the way Obi-Wan beats Maul. I felt that with Maul, any moment that he parries Obi-Wan is saying that he’s as good as Obi-Wan and I don’t think that’s true. I don’t think Maul ever accepted a path of selflessness and enlightenment and in the end, never getting over his need for revenge, and his anger and the way his life worked out is what undid him.''

Source: ign.com

That's a stupid statement because it means that Adult Ahsoka is very close to Darth Vader because the duel lasted longer than the Maul vs. Ben Kenobi duel, that also contradicts with Maul's superiority over Adult Ahsoka (and even when they dueled each other Ahsoka never showed any superiority against Maul) who lasted much longer against Vader who is slightly better than Ben Kenobi.

He retconned that stupid explanation with multiple other statements by saying that the duel was a mental duel not a physical one, or how Kenobi faked his lightsaber stance by using Qui-Gon pose in order to deceive Maul during their duel.

The preparation

Ben Kenobi was prepared for the duel;

Ben Kenobi : ''One doesn't survive as long as I've by being foolish or unprepared. Maul is an old adversary, and a persistent one at that.''

Source: Star Wars Rebels: Season 3 Episode 20

The concept

The concept of the fight was different than the usual duels due to marketing purposes.

Dave Filoni : “It was a much-discussed thing on how that was gonna go down,” Filoni said. “The instinct would be, and probably, I admit, the expectation, is for some kind of prolonged lightsaber battle. But I’ve done a lot of prolonged lightsaber battles over the years and I think what’s most important about any kind of confrontation is what’s riding on it. What’s the tension going into it? It starts to matter less and less how you swing a sword or how creatively you do it if there’s not a lot riding on it.”

Source: io9.gizmodo.com

He also mentions about the duel being an homage to the Seven Samurai duel.

Dave Filoni : ''If you talk to a lot of people that sword fight they’ll tell you, people that are very good don’t have long fights. It’s very quick. And so that scene it’s an homage to the Seven Samurai. I think on one level people would be excited to see another prolonged lightsaber fight but I just never really saw the confrontation that way because to do that is to say the characters just don’t have growth. Yes, it’s exciting as an audience member but it’s not a really believable thing. Storytelling has to evolve.''

The duel played on their head

Henry Gilroy : “When you’ve fought someone many times, and you’ve faced off, you kind of know each other’s moves. So if you think about it the build up to this confrontation and the actual lightsabers hitting each other is actually longer because they’re basically playing it out in their heads.”

Source: Rebels Recon #3.20: Inside "Twin Suns"

According to the producer, it was a mental duel and it was longer.

Animation supervisor states that the duel is a game within a game.

Keith Kellogg : ''It's much more about foot work and the thought process that Obi-Wan has. It starts out as young Obi-Wan and then we shift him to sort of what Alec would do when he was fighting and then the very last one you should look back at the Phantom Menace you can see what Qui-Gon's doing. We just sort of moved him just a little bit right after Maul changes his. It's kind of a game within a game almost.''

Source: Behind The Scenes: Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul | Star Wars Rebels

Maul underestimates Ben Kenobi

Sam Witwer : ''Because of that fight, Maul goes "Oh my god, I completely underestimated him"

(...)

Maul is absolutely certain this old man has past his prime, he just doesn't understand this is an active Jedi Knight who is serving the Order even though it doesn't exist, he is doing the most important thing in the galaxy right now.''

Source: Rebel Force Radio Interview

Another evidence is how Maul sees Ben Kenobi;

Maul : ''Look what has become of you, a rat in the desert.''

''I've come to kill you, but perhaps it's worse to leave you here, festering in your squalor.''

Source: Rebels Season 3 Episode 20

Maul directly goes for the killing move, it was his choice

Maul underestimates Kenobi, and directly goes for the killing move (which is Maul's own three strike technique), even then;

Dave Filoni : ''Qui-Gon part came late, when I was looking at it again. Originally, in that movie, when Kyuzo strikes the guy down, it's a one strike with the lightsaber.

But when we got animated, Keith Kellogg and I were looking at it, it's just Maul's technique to go, really quick, one-two-three, so, it didn't feel like Maul does get a shot at all. So block-block, then he (Maul) goes for that move (the move that he took down Qui-Gon), that's where I decided to put that move in.''

Source: Star Wars Celebration 2017

When you compare it to the Seven Samurai duel, the duel should've been a one-shot duel.

No Caption Provided

Filoni changes the original ''one-shot'' scene from Seven Samurai, because it didn't feel like Maul gets a shot at Kenobi unlike the samurai that attacked Kyuzo in the movie.

No Caption Provided

Kenobi uses that Qui-Gon posing scene and he has to deflect those 2 extra strikes from Maul just to make it a more competitive duel than the duel that happened in the Seven Samurai.

Now if the duel was an homage to the Seven Samurai, and if the duel was meant to be a one-shot strike, and adding two extra lightsaber clashes and adding a special hilt bumping move, (which comes from Maul's past) how competitive this duel really is considering the old style one-shot movie concept?

Kenobi's trap for Maul

To easily explain, Kenobi waits at the defense against Maul, while Kenobi attacks Vader, who is a more powerful opponent than Maul.

No Caption Provided

Source: A New Hope

It doesn't make sense to attack a more powerful opponent while waiting on the defense against a weaker one. Which means that Kenobi was indeed trying to deceive Maul with that Qui-Gon pose.

Henry Gilroy : ''And the amazing thing is, the move that Maul tries after the initial exchange, he actually attempts the move that killed Qui-Gon Jinn. He tries to basically bash him with the hilt.”

Source: Rebels Recon #3.20: Inside "Twin Suns"

No Caption Provided

Question : ''The move that he took down Qui-Gon ?''

Dave Filoni : ''Yeah, also visually tells the story that Obi-Wan paid attention, you know that moment was kind of put into his brain and that he could defeat.''

Source: Star Wars Celebration 2017

Now ask yourself this, if Maul never attacked Kenobi and if he never used the same hilt bumping move, could Kenobi defeat Maul by waiting at defense?

We've seen how Maul dominated Kenobi in the Clone Wars when Kenobi tried to fight offensively. Kenobi had to wait at defense and he had to deceive Maul with the Qui-Gon pose.

And don't forget that this is the same Kenobi that dueled with Vader at the Death Star.

He literally says that Obi-Wan defeats Maul only because of his prior knowledge about Maul, not due to superior skill.

Ben Kenobi's amplification against Maul

Filoni directly says that Obi-Wan is unbeatable ''in that moment'' because he is protecting someone else (the most important thing to him; Chosen One) in the end.

Dave Filoni : ''When pressed, because Obi-Wan is protecting someone else in the end, he does fight. But because he is so true and knows who he is in that moment, you can't defeat that.''

Source: io9.gizmodo.com

Summary for the Ben Kenobi duel:

  • Kenobi was amped (unbeatable in the moment) against Maul.
  • Kenobi was prepared for the duel.
  • Maul underestimates Ben Kenobi and believes he could kill him quickly.
  • Kenobi deceived and lured Maul with a fake Qui-Gon stance.
  • The duel was mental and played out on their head. It wasn't a physical duel.
  • The concept of the duel was from the Seven Samurai duel and they changed the original one-shot strike scene and they've added two extra saber strikes for making the duel more competitive than the original one.
  • Kenobi had to wait for Maul's attack to win the duel, without the anticipated hilt bump move he couldn't win.

The duel was extremely circumstantial and can't be used, on the contrary, to think that a Kenobi level duelist (who is contending with Vader even better than Adult Ahsoka) needed a trap and amplification to win against Maul, which only shows that how formidable Maul is.

Maul ranks better than Dooku as a sword fighter and not only in skill, better than him everything except for TK, and he is the same level with the Kenobi in terms of skill (without Kenobi's amplification and the deceiving tactic) who can match with Vader (who is way above of Dooku) in a duel.

Respect.

Did Palpatine's Lightning Hit Mace Windu ?

When I re-watch the scene, I've noticed something ;

In here, some of Palpatine's lightning is actually reaching to Mace Windu, which also makes sense that why Mace screams in pain while no other lightsaber fighters do in the same position against a Force lightning attack.

You can see Mace's face clear, which is in pain.

And now, it's just obvious ;

Palpatine's lightning actually hits Mace and he screams in pain ;

And then, it hits his legs too.

No Caption Provided

I wanted to make it clear, since there are still Sidious supporters on this site who believes that Sidious wasn't actually trying to kill Mace Windu and he was toying with him. Which is illogical when you see how powerful that Force lightning was, and it could easily kill Mace if not for his last micro-second lightsaber reaction. It even hits him partially and Mace screams in pain because of that.

Did Cybernetic legs slow down Darth Maul ?

Let's see if he gets any slower or not ;

First of all, Shadow Conspiracy novel confirms that Maul has become more powerful in every department, that includes ''speed'' as well ;

How did Dooku kill Ventress ?

This is an interesting discussion since I've seen that some people actually claims that Dooku's Force lightning was powerful enough to kill Ventress.

Let's see if he can actually kill Ventress with it ;

No Caption Provided

---The Clone Wars: Season 3: Episode 14 - 20 BBY

Dooku was trying to kill Ventress with it, however she survives Dooku's Force lightning blast. And then she escapes from there.

And then we've ;

Violently, she shoved Vos away, putting the Force into the movement so powerfully that he was hurled across the room. As he struck the wall, he heard a terrifyingly familiar sound: the sizzle and crackle of Force lightning.

Dooku stood, his teeth bared in a savage snarl of victory. Ventress was caught in the most violent bolts of Force lightning Vos had ever seen. They danced and crackled about her hungrily, almost like living creatures. Her body spasmed and her face contorted into a mask of absolute agony. Blood trickled from her ears, eyes, and nose.

---Dark Disciple - 19 BBY

Ventress dies because of the Force lightning that Dooku sent.

If Dooku couldn't kill her before with Force lightning in TCW S3, how could he did it in Dark Disciple ? The answer is obvious,

Ventress came to in darkness. Something heavy was pressing down on her, and her eyelids were sealed shut with a sticky substance. She tried to lift a hand to wipe off whatever was covering them, but pain shot through her at the movement and she almost lost consciousness a second time. The last thing she remembered was being in mid-jump. A sound like nothing she had ever heard had thundered in her ears, and then-

The tower. It had shattered. Vos...was he...

"Ventress!" Despite the physical agony, relief washed through Ventress. He was still alive. Maybe the tower had taken Dooku with it to both their demises.

"Ventress!" She tried to call out to him, but her torso was squeezed so tightly she could barely breathe. "Vos," she whispered.

---Dark Disciple - 19 BBY

Before Dooku shoots him with Force lightning, Ventress was heavily wounded because of the explosion that took down the tower.

Ventress didn't know yet the extent of her injuries, but by his expression, she knew they were serious. He knelt beside her.

"Put your arms around my neck," he said. She tried to do so, but she suspected that one arm was broken. The other was heavy, so heavy. Ventress made a sound of frustration, and he soothed her, "That's all right, I've got you. I've got you. Come on, we're going to get out of here to someplace safe."

---Dark Disciple - 19 BBY

At this point, Ventress was already ''seriously'' injured and one of her arms was broken.

Dooku's Force lightning was more effective on Ventress in here, simply because Ventress' serious injuries, and she was already at her limit there. The arguments on Dooku's lightning was powerful enough to kill Ventress doesn't make any sense in that regard.

I hope this will clear things up.

''He was a well trained apprentice and that he would start to do the things that he trained to do, to build armies, to deceive people, create a power base for himself. So George came up with the idea of teaming up Maul with the Mandalorians.''

''But all parts are showing that Maul isn't just a brute force, but he is also being smart, he is building a power base, he is doing kind of Sidious did with the senate.''

Old Maul in the Rebels

No Caption Provided

The first thing that intrigues me about Rebels Maul was that his cane. I mean sure he was faking and he was trying to deceive Ezra, but even before that, he was still using a walking stick inside of the temple at Malachor.

No Caption Provided

Which means that he isn't physically fit as he was before in The Phantom Menace and The Clone Wars, if not, I don't see any logical reason for him to use a walking stick.

We also know that OT era Palpatine also started to use a walking stick after he is getting old ...

TPM / RotS Palpatine

RotJ Palpatine and his walking stick

Also it has been stated that Palpatine became physically weaker ;

Possessed of the boundless power of the Force and adept in the ways of the dark side, Emperor Palpatine was one of the most dangerous and evil Humans in galactic history. As his corruption grew stronger, the Emperor became physically weaker, but he was never helpless.

And he is beaten by Vader's one hand grip in the of the RotJ.

Even though Vader is extremely strong, Palpatine should've been physically equally strong as Vader, if not stronger, in the Clone Wars he was able to match with Savage Opress, and casually kills a several bodyguards with his barehands.

Now if Palpatine's physical strength is actually decreasing after he is getting very old, can we say the same things about Old Maul in Rebels ?

Voice actor of Maul from both TCW and Rebels series already made it clear that Maul is past his prime, while Dave Filoni was there;

Witwer: He has this ambition that still exists inside him and that ambition is eating him up –especially now that he’s past his prime and his glory years. Yeah, he’s a sadder character than we perhaps remember in Clone Wars.

Dave, you’ve had Ezra pulled between both the light and the dark side of the Force. Is Maul a cautionary tale for him? An example of what not to do?

Filoni: This whole season has been about getting Ezra to kind of explore the dark side of the Force and be aware of its existence on a powerful level that maybe he didn’t understand before. It’s really kind of an Empire Strikes Back movement for the series, where we bring the dark side out more to our heroes and challenge them with it. It’s going to get pretty crazy before the end here.

But then, Maul was strong enough to hurl a Force sensitive being Eight Brother with the Force, and even kills Seventh Sister with a Force choke, so how could he become weaker... Physically maybe ? Just like RotJ Palpatine was ?

First off, I find it very odd that Maul struggles to pull Ezra when Ezra was falling from the temple's chamber ;

And secondly, he has failed to overpower Kanan when Kanan caught his arm ;

Maul we know from TPM and TCW, was a complete physical powerhouse, he casually breaks durasteel binders, overpowers people like Grievous, Obi-Wan, or even Savage Opress, and a lot of creatures that possesses enhanced strength.

So what's wrong with Maul in the Rebels ? The answer seems to be that his old age, just like RotJ Palpatine loses his superior physical abilities after so many years...

It seems like Old Maul still has his fighting skills and his Force powers, but it seems like he lost his superior physical strength and probably his stamina.
