Superman Lives!

Superman Lives was a movie pitched by Kevin Smith that had Nicolas Cage starring as Superman and was to be produced by Tim Burton. You may have heard about this as the worst Superman movie never made. I would argue that this movie should have been made because it had some good elements and even if it was terrible it would still be fun to laugh at like Batman and Robin.

The fallowing text is mostly from Wikipidia (But I included pictures so I'm not a total rip off artist).

Kevin Smith pitched Jon Peters his story outline in August 1996, and was allowed to write the screenplay under certain conditions: Peters wanted Superman to wear an all-black suit,[23] and also did not want Superman to fly,[23] arguing that Superman would "look like an overgrown Boy Scout."[22] Smith wrote Superman flying as "a red-and-blue blur in flight, creating a sonic boom every time he flew."[26]

Peters also wanted Superman to fight a giant spider for the climactic showdown. I don't know about you but that looks f@#king Bada$$!

Art designer Sylvain Despretz claimed the art department was assigned to create something that had little or nothing to do with the Superman comic book.

Burton gave Despretz a concept drawing for Brainiac, which Despretz claims was "a cone with a round ball on top, and something that looked like an emaciated skull inside. Imagine you take Merlin's hat, and you stick a fish bowl on top, with a skull in it."

Ok The first concept was nothing special but it's a cool idea to have Brainiac go from a weak creepy little bug into a huge space spider!

Brainiac's robot assistant L-Ron was going to be "a gay R2-D2 with attitude."

Nicolas Cage, a comic book fan, signed on as Superman with a $20 million pay-or-play contract, believing he could "re-conceive the character."[23] Peters felt Cage could "convince audiences he [Superman] came from outer space."[28] Burton explained Cage's casting would be "the first time you would believe that nobody could recognize Clark Kent as Superman, he [Cage] could physically change his persona."

[29]Kevin Spacey was approached for the role of Lex Luthor,[29] while Tim Allen claimed he was in talks for Brainiac,[30] a role heavily considered for Jim Carrey.[25]Courteney Cox was reported as a casting possibility for Lois Lane, while Smith confirmed Chris Rock was set for Jimmy Olsen, Christopher Walken was in negotiations for Perry White.

Stop the train! Chris rock as Jimmy Olsen and Christopher Walken as Perry White... Why couldn't this film be made?!?!

Oh that's right. They where more concerned about the toy deals. But Brainiac vs polar bears would have been cool.

Smith's draft (titled Superman Lives) had Brainiac sending Doomsday to kill Superman, as well as blocking out the sun to make Superman powerless, as Superman is fueled by sunlight.

They change Doomsday's character design a lot. I like the last one the best.

So Doomsday kills superman and his coffin looks awesome!

but Superman is resurrected by a Kryptonian robot, the Eradicator.

Brainiac wishes to possess the Eradicator and its technology.

Powerless, the resurrected Superman is sheathed in armor formed from the Eradicator itself until his powers return, courtesy of sunbeams, and defeats Brainiac.

Ok so that explains why Superman looks like F%&king Frankenstein. So now that I know the story behind the costume redesign I got to admit Superman in a weakened state and forced to walk around in battle-suit to keep his guts in while taking on his greatest enemy is kind of a cool idea. Almost like...

Well I hope you have enjoyed this adventure into the development of Superman Lives. To be honest I'm a little bummed it did'nt get made. Fingers are crossed that they address Brainiac and the death of Superman in the Man of Steel franchise. In any case Superman will live on! Stay strong Super-Fans!

Off My Mind: Major story archs in the New 52

With the new continuity in the New 52 I was wondering what would happen to some big comic events, specifically KnightFall and The Death of Superman.

I would love to see more updated versions of Bane and Doomsday. I wonder how these characters will be introduced and whether they will have as big of an impact the second time around.

I want your thoughts on what story arks the New 52 should revisit or leave alone.
