Doesn't it depend on the powers?
For example, if you can shoot flames out of your eyes, that's nice, but it may not necessarily be useful if the flames aren't comparable to a flamethrower. And even if they are, what then? A bank robber is getting away, do you fry them to a crisp right there? Seems a bit harsh.
But let's assume you have a practical power(s). If you do fight crime, then you're a vigilante, and the police will arrest you on sight, if possible. Do you join the police force? That presents a whole lot of other problems, as soon as the bureaucrats realize they can regulate the use of your powers, and you have to comply.
By the way, don't think a simple mask will protect your identity. Eventually, you will leave some DNA behind at a crime scene. If they already have your DNA on file, you're screwed. On the other hand, it shouldn't be too long before forensic experts will be able to feed DNA into a computer and get a face from it.
Unless you're the Hulk, or something comparably overpowered, then governments will hunt you down mercilessly. You'd be stepping on their toes, and they don't like competition.
Use your powers for party tricks, and forget about crimefighting. You'll live longer and happier.
