I forgot who said this but it was quoted by Dawkins in a doc he did. It went something like "If religion didnt exist we would have good people doing good things and bad people doing bad things but only religion can make good people do bad things."

That's a stupid quote IMO. All sorts of different ideologies can corrupt people, not just religion, and I've experienced a lot of personal self-growth and moral improvement heavily influenced by my religious perspective, and I've seen several of the most loving people I know shaped into the amazing people they are largely by their religious faith. Dawkins is being kinda dumb when he characterizes religion as some big boogeyman that is responsible for most of the world's problems, he suggests religion is the only thing can corrupt good people, and he suggests religion's only impacts are negative ones, all of which is patently false.

The four horsemen are obviously very intelligent people in their own ways, but sometimes they said some rather stupid things. For example the Dawkins quote "Why do we feel the universe owes us an explanation," which is completely disingenuous from a religious or secular perspective, or Sam Harris's belief that our self-awareness and subjective experience doesn't really exist because it can't be physically quantified.

I think the point of the quote was to show how religion is often used to justify awful acts and make people follow just because its the holy law. Religion can make people better themselves, thats true just like other ideologys can corrupt people aswell but you have to agree that most of the things that a majority of people would find bad in todays world has been due to or justified with religion in the present and the past. Dawkins does go overboard in putting all the blame on religion for the worlds problems but to be fair the things he seems to have problems with are all religious related. The question is if this is accidental or if he just cherry picks the ones that would fit his anti religious agenda.

Also I dont believe he thinks religions only impact is negative. IMO he believes the negatives far outweigh the positives which is up for discussion.

Our species is at the top of the food chain not because we are the strongest or the fastest, its because were the only social species to reach this level of intelligence. Hurting each other would be counter productive to our survival chances. We live to reproduce inside a social structure.

Then we have human emotion which is where morals come from, not from religion. Love, hate, envy, fear, joy, sadness, shame, disgust, etc. and through empathy we decide what we think is right. Even if you are religious, if you dont decide by yourself what your morals should be according to your experiences in life then you are doing it wrong IMO.

I forgot who said this but it was quoted by Dawkins in a doc he did. It went something like "If religion didnt exist we would have good people doing good things and bad people doing bad things but only religion can make good people do bad things."

Luckily im puertorican and in PR there is no such things since we were all equally f'ed by the spanish.

Don't Ricans and other hispanics follow that "mejorar la raza"(whiten/improve the race) ideology?

I have never met a single person in PR that has ever mentioned "mejorar la raza" and I have lived here all my life. I cant speak for other latino countries or latinos in the US but in Puerto Rico and in the Dominican Republic the "gringos" are not liked very much.

Some ricans want PR to become a state (which will never happen) but not to become whiter. I would say the skin color that is most beloved here is the natural perfect tan some are born with. Im a white rican and trust me noone wants to be white (not that were persecuted or anything since race doesnt really play a factor here its just being naturally tan really goes well with living in a place where its always sunny and theres a beach 5 min from your house).

PS: Here some white people have curly hair, black people have straight hair, tan people have lighter shades of eyes. Its a complete mix here so even if there is a small group of people that follow that ideology, it wont work. My gma is tan, my mom and her younger sister are white, im white but one of my cousins is tan and his sister is black. Thats genetics for ya in PR.

Seems like black people, especially young black people like to shame and throw guilt on white people because of what happened in the past. There is still discrimination against minorities but not to the extent that was happening in the past, thankfully, but its mostly controlled by the media to show you things like "cop kills innocent young black man" when in reality cops kill unarmed people of all races but that doesnt sell.

The people that are mostly affected are white millennials whom most arent racist and actively try to be sensitive and understand what minorities have gone/go through yet they are attacked and vilified for what their parents or grandparents did.

You know who isnt affected by white shaming? That 70 year old white guy who hates all minorities, would throw bricks at people during the civil rights movement and yells at his tv every time he sees the LBGT community move in a positive direction.

Side note: Its incredible how much a school lunchroom looks like a prison lunchroom. Whites with whites, blacks with blacks, latinos with latinos, asians with asians, etc.

Luckily im puertorican and in PR there is no such things since we were all equally f'ed by the spanish.

@heroup2112: I actually hadnt thought of tribalism so you post probably helped me the most. Also yes, I will try to write an objective paper. I think bashing religion is as progressive as being a religious fanatic.

@lunacyde: Going into it with an open mind is the plan. Im trying to show religion objectively and how its been used throughout history wether good or bad rather than the follow without asking questions mentality most want you to have. Most people in Puerto Rico are religious and most schools are aswell yet they only show what they want you to see to push their agenda Hopefully I dont sound like Im saying religion=bad and no religion=good since thats not what Im trying to get across.

@captain_inverse:Yes its all religion, I felt that would give me plenty of material to work with.

I'm doing research for an oral presentation I have to give in one of my college classes and I chose the topic "How would the world be better if religion never existed?". Of course I'm doing my own research but there are some smart people on this site too who might know a thing or two about the subject.

Please no fights about religion. I'm looking for anything that has been caused, influenced or justified because of religious reasons that has caused any type of damage. It can be war, oppression, unlawful things, stalling certain scientific fields from developing or just about anything that you feel made humanity take a step back or held it back from taking a step forward. Also if you can mention extinct religions or smaller ones, not just the bigger ones like christianity, muslim, judaism, etc. that would be awesome.

AGAIN please no fighting, this is not to debate which religion is better or worse but to gather information.

I was bored watching CW in the theater half the time. I actually looked at the time to see if it was close to ending and that rarely happens to me since I dont mind watching bad movies if they have a guilty pleasure to them.

Not saying its bad but WS is one of my favorite CBM while CW I probably wont even bother watching again unfortunately. I wish I could enjoy it as much as other people.
