―Master Gnost-Dural (A Record of the Dread Masters)

The Dread Masters were more powerful than Darth Nox or the Emperor's Wrath.

"Challenge me before the council if you wish. But turn away, and Korriban itself may burn. Even you cannot slay the Dread Masters singlehandely."

―Darth Marr (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

Darth Nox did not believe that the Dread Masters powers could possibly be contained, despite the Dark Lord himself being able to contain and control his numerous ancient Sith spirits within his body.

"Powers such as theirs cannot be contained."

―Darth Nox (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

The Dread Masters were one of the Sith Emperor's greatest weapons.

"One of the Sith Emperor's mightiest weapons in the Great War was also one of his oldest: six ancient Sith Lords known as the Dread Masters who had served the Emperor for centuries."

Combat Abilities:

The Dread Masters held their own against a strike team of the "galaxy's most powerful champions" consisting of the Hero of Tython, the Emperor's Wrath II, Darth Nox, Barsen'thor, and others, before succumbing, unleashing a mass variety of powers from powerful Telekinesis to widespread Force Lightning and Sith Sorcery. During the battle, they resurrected the two fallen Dread Masters, who were killed before the fight as spirits, who were able to affect the mortal realm and fight alongside them. Much of their downfall can be attributed to Ogan-Dei and many Jedi shielding their forces from the Dread Master's terror as Lord Hargrev and his acolytes waged a mental war against the Sith that pushed their illusions back.

"Stay and shield us from the Dread Master's power."

―Darth Nox (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"My acolytes and I will confront the enemy through the Force as you break their flesh."

―Lord Hargrev (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

NOTE: The below features abilities in which the Dread Masters either worked in unison with one another, or an instance where they completed exactly the same feat (an example being jumping back to their throne). Because of this, some showings seen here can be applied to the Dread Masters as individuals as well.

Telekinesis (Alter):

Heart Rend, a non-Force sensitive, was able to draw upon the power of the Dread Masters to telekinetically hurl an Imperial Soldier with such force against a massive Rakata statue that it was utterly obliterated.

The Dread Masters were able to subdue and telekinetically choke Heart Rend to death.

"Abominations, all of you, choking the skies. The darkness, growing, drowning! Ah!"

―Heart Rend (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

Telepathy (Alter):

The content in the next section reflects the umbrella title of Telepathy, also known as Force Fear, Mind Trick, Mind Control, Dominate Mind, Force Illusions, Force Persuasion, Mindforms, Force Corruption, Mindform, Affect Mind, and Alter Mind. The Dread Masters also use a corrupted form of Battle Meditation. For more information, visit the "Alter Environment" and "Sith Sorcery" sections below.

The Dread Masters had assembled an entire army through mental corruption. Hundreds of Sith Lords and Jedi Masters have been irreparably and paranoically turned insane and loyal to them.

"Since betraying the Empire, the Dread Masters have quickly amassed a military force of their own, which they refer to as their “Dread Host”. Our research suggests that very few members of this force are willing volunteers; most are former Republic and Imperial personnel whose minds have been irreparably dominated by the power of the Dread Masters. Efforts to question or treat captured members of the Dread Host have been entirely unsuccessful. The constant psychological manipulations of the Dread Masters have rendered their followers both completely loyal and incurably, paranoically insane."

―Star Wars: The Old Republic

"In a string of recent confrontations with the Empire, dozens of Republic warships had gone missing, leaving evidence that they fled after the personnel on board were overcome by a profound and mysterious terror."

―Gnost-Dural (The Journal of Master Gnost-Dural)

"Furthermore, the Dread Masters’ ability to induce widespread terror, paranoia, and hallucinations may not have been affected by Styrak’s death, and I have found nothing in my studies that would suggest any foolproof defense against their power, either for you or your forces."

―Master Gnost-Dural (A Record of the Dread Masters)

"It seems the Dread Masters were using a previously unheard of form of 'Battle Meditation' to project this terror at our ships."

―Master Gnost-Dural (A Record of the Dread Masters)

The Dread Masters obliterated the large Republic and Imperial fleets above Oricon by their mental prowess nearly instantly, and continued to antagonize the survivors on the planet through illusions and terror.

"The Republic moved before we did, sending a full fleet to Oricon. Its armada was undone by the Masters' powers of fear and madness."

―Darth Marr (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"The Dread Master's projected images into our minds. Personal images, shocking images. None of us were prepared, and our ships began to go down."

"Sergeant Trila. I'm the highest ranking person on Oricon who's not dead, insane, or in a trance."

―Sergeant Trila (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"Reports from Oricon have been highly erratic and contradictory. Used as a headquarters by rogue Sith known as the Dread Masters, the moon was invaded by Republic and Imperial forces, all of whom seem to have suffered from psychological manipulations with varying degrees of severity."

―Jonas Balkar (The Search for Oricon)

The Dread Masters, while in a highly weakened state, inflicted psychic trauma on so many prisoners while in stasis captivity that they killed every being in a 984 foot radius around them.

"The Dread Masters, terrifying Sith Lords of incalculable power, were first kept in Maximum Security. The psychic trauma the Sith inflicted on nearby prisoners caused so many deaths that it emptied every cell in a 300 meter radius around them."

―Star Wars: The Old Republic Encyclopedia

The Dread Masters subdued a high-ranking crew and the extremely powerful Hero of Tython on a Republic flagship from across the galaxy to where they were forced into submission on their knees. During this, they also appeared before the Sith Empire's champion on their fleet and to the Chancellor on Coruscant.

"Your air grows thing. We are prisoners no more. Free of the Republic. Free of the Empire. Both will fall before the Dread Masters."

―Dread Master Raptus (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"I never felt fear like that before. Not even as a padawan."

―Captian Exteen (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"They appeared in my senate chamber as well. Security systems didn't register their presence. But we know their names, the Dread Masters were powerful Sith serving the Emperor. They laid waste to whole fleets during the last war. These are no ordinary Sith Lords."

The Dread Masters manipulated Trandoshian mercenaries, such as the infamous warlord Kephess, massive armored walkers, and vicious beasts, to seize the planet of Denova and their weapons.

"Denova was a test. Weak minds twisted and turned."

―The Dread Masters (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"The Dread Masters further expanded their influence by briefly seizing control of the planet Denova, a major supplier of explosive munitions. Working through mercenary intermediaries, the Dread Masters seized an unknown amount of high-powered explosives, along with weapons, ground and air vehicles, and other military supplies originally stationed on the planet by the Republic."

―Master Gnost-Dural (A Record of the Dread Masters)

The Dread Masters were capable of forcing even the most hardened soldiers to suicide or treason by words.

"Three more gone, my lord. Two commandos took knives to one another--hallucination-induced psychosis, apparently-- and Major Strix fled camp."

―Maiya Vix (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"That lump in your throat? Its fear. Think on what will happen next. First, the pupils dilate, muscles tighten, hysteria replaces rationality, and then the mind shatters."

―Dread Master Calphayus (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

The Dread Masters had unleashed the outermost boundaries of fear on hundreds of slave victims.

"Once construction was completed, the Dread Masters used the fortress compound to expend their slaves in experiments designed to test the limits of the Phobis devices, and to explore the outermost boundaries of fear."

―The Dread Fortress Codex Entry (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

The Dread Masters turned a man who passed every mental resistance test available to irreparably and nightmarishly crazed. He killed numerous guards before being killed, horrifically smiling in the process.

"He’d passed all the psych tests, resisted every mind-altering device and chemical they could find. Plenty of qualifications... He’d hijacked a Dread Host ship and flown it back, just like they planned, but he’d also lost his blasted mind, which for some reason they hadn’t planned. He was sitting alone in their hangar with a big nasty blade and a smile on his face and not a single word for anyone, so they were hoping I might be able to get him to open up. I never got to ask them how things went from bad to nightmarish; he’d spread pieces of them all over the place by the time I got there. The guards were dead, too, but just the normal, murdered kind of dead. I guess they didn’t merit the special treatment, even though they must’ve shot the kid five times apiece. He was just standing there, full of holes, smiling that same shiny kid smile he had when they first brought him in."

―Jonas Balkar (The Search for Oricon)

Sith Sorcery (Alter):

The content in the next section reflects the power(s) of Sith Sorcery, also known as Sith Magic or Rituals. Accomplishments with Sith Alchemy, also known as Force Alchemy, will be listed here as well.

The Dread Masters have mastered the Phobis devices, artifacts that have driven even the most wicked Sith insane. These devices were beyond scientific understanding for both the Republic and the Empire alike. This was also a fantastic display of Mental Resistance, also known as Telepathic Resistance, Force Resistance, Willpower, Mental Fortitude, and Psychological Resilience.

"Fear is a powerful weapon, and those who wield it can rule the galaxy. The Phobis devices were constructed for just that purpose. Brimming with dark energy, their mere presence was enough to spark crippling horror in the bravest of minds. Many Sith who meditated on the devices were driven mad by their attempt. Only the lost Sith Dread Masters successfully harnessed and perfected the Phobis devices' frightening power."

―Phobis Devices Codex Entry (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"Their name was earned when they studied the power of the Phobis devices, artifacts that have driven even the most depraved Sith mad with terror. "

―The Dread Masters Codex Entry (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"The Dread Masters earned their name by studying the Phobis devices, Sith artifacts capable of inflicting crippling terror."

―Star Wars: The Old Republic Encyclopedia

"We know for a fact that the Dread Masters still have a vast army of fanatical soldiers at their command, as well as a collection of powerful and ancient technologies that lie well outside of our scientific understanding."

―Master Gnost-Dural (A Record of the Dread Masters)

The Dread Masters, through ancient and unnatural means such as rituals, had achieved Immortality and were immune to the power of aging or time. They were well beyond the likes of mere mortals.

"Once, we were mortals, and we dreamed of mortal things. Now we are beyond man, woman, or Sith."

―Dread Master Bestia (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"Were you... tempted at all? To live as a union of fear, without mortal inhibitions."

―Lord Hargrev (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"... though their lifespans have extended well beyond the norm for that species. We do not know the extent of their longevity, nor the world they came from. We don’t even know their true names."

―Master Gnost-Dural (A Record of the Dread Masters)

"Their appearance alone tells us a great deal, as they are clearly centuries old."

―Gnost-Dural (The Journal of Master Gnost-Dural)

The Dread Masters resurrected Dread Master Brontes, Dread Master Styrak, and his Kell Dragon as Force Spirits, also known as Force Ghosts, capable of affecting the mortal realm. This was accomplished by preserving their energies in the Dread Holocron, and then calling upon said power during battle.

"Our union has transcended death."

―Dread Master Calphayus (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

The Dread Masters resurrected Kephess, amplifying his size, strength, and power in an act of Reanimation. When Kephess was challenged by a strike team on Denova, the Dread Masters imbued him with power from across the galaxy, allowing him to grow even greater in size and utilize the Force.

"One of the mightiest and most renowned Trandoshan warlords in galactic history, Kephess and his mercenary army nicknamed “the Warstalkers” struck terror on battlefields across known space. Kephess personally killed thousands of enemy combatants and never failed to complete a contract–until he encountered the Dread Masters. Although the details of what exactly the Dread Masters did to Kephess remain unknown, it’s clear that he has been imbued with some portion of their considerable power, managing to fully recover from fatal injuries and perform physical feats beyond that of typical Trandoshans. Kephess has become the Dread Masters’ “chosen one,” obsessed with spreading terror and violence in their name–but to what end, only the Dread Masters themselves know."

―Kephess Codex Entry (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"Denova was a test. Weak minds twisted and turned. Kephess was our tool. Our vessel. The vessel is damaged. It can be repaired."

―The Dread Masters (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

"It is time that I thank you for shattering that weak body so I could be remade. Look upon the chosen! See what death could not claim!"

Alter Environment (Alter):

The Dread Masters, with the aid of other alien technologies, corrupted the planet of Oricon to an indescribably powerful dark side nexus. Entire species and land areas were converted into crippling masses of lava and twisted, monstrous creatures. The transformation of creatures to corrupted beasts was a display of Sith Alchemy, also known as Force Alchemy. The very atmosphere of the planet was transformed into that which induced mind control, making every step a fight for your life.

"At first blush, there is nothing at all remarkable about the remote, rocky sphere called Oricon. However, anyone with an affinity for the Force can sense that the Outer Rim moon is immeasurably strong with the dark side. Fitting, then, that the rogue Sith lords known as the Dread Masters have claimed Oricon as their home.

The once-lifeless moon now brims with creatures from across the galaxy that have been experimented on, corrupted with dark energy and driven to frenzy by the Dread Masters. It is also a starship graveyard, its surface littered with Republic and Imperial ships torn apart by dark waves of madness and fear. There can be no doubt: Oricon has become one of the most hazardous destinations in the galaxy."

―Star Wars: The Old Republic

"Oricon is a remote moon that is immeasurably strong with the dark side – a perfect home for the feared Dread Masters!"

Almost all currently documented kell dragons were bred in captivity and trained specifically for battle in underworld fighting pits, despite the illegal nature of such activities throughout most of the galaxy. Although genetically related to the famed krayt dragons of the planet Tatooine, the homeworld of the smaller kell dragons remains unknown.
