Zack Fair Respect Thread

"Embrace your dreams, and... whatever happens, protect your honor... as SOLDIER!"

For the best quality, switch to blog format.

I'm not pretending to make this for this website specifically, so standards of evidence may vary. I just happen to like the blog format here the best. As my intention is to be as complete as possible, regardless of your standards, I'm pretty sure you'll find something to use in here.

On what qualifies as a feat for the purposes of this collection? As video games seem to be one of those things that lack universal standards?

Things like HP, other stats, and status conditions are obviously gameplay and play no part in evaluation.

What's left of relevance then?

The animations and how they interact with the models are removed from the statistics used to determine game mechanics. In general, I prefer to take the animations and how they interact as being representative of their capabilities unless otherwise clarified to not be so by the developers. Repeated animations that couldn't feasibly be repeated aren't something to concern oneself with either. In consideration to disk space and internal storage/memory, its a bit ridiculous to ask for unique animations to the effect of preserving some arbitrary form of continuity when the animation just exists to represent what came to the development team's imagination.

Doesn't have to be your take, just happens to be mine and elsewhere.

Will/Mental/Spiritual Power Mechanics of FFVII

Here, here, here, and here, the Lifestream is the merged/convergent path of energy (Spirit Energy) of the consciousness/hearts/souls for all living things roaming the Planet. New life born with Spirit Energy and die to return it to the Planet (with some exceptions). Spirit Energy is what makes it possible for the planets to form in Final Fantasy VII. Without Spirit Energy, the planets cannot retain their shape and are destroyed. Shinra's use of Mako Energy will deplete the Lifestream over time and lead to the death of the Planet.

"It's full of the knowledge of the Ancients. No...not knowledge...consciousness...a living soul..."
"To an operative, nothing compares to the experience gained on the journey to SOLDIER 1st Class. Operatives tap into these past achievements to carry out feats otherwise inconceivable. In fact, without being able to recall such experiences, an operative would find himself unable to improve his skills."

The man could sense the Lifestream trying to erode his spirit– the memories of his former experiences, thoughts and emotions. If he allowed himself be taken into the current, the being he once was would soon disseminate and disappear amongst the spirit energy cycling around the planet.

Lifestream Black 1

Some of the people possessed wounds that even the materia Yuffie had couldn’t heal but, she was sure they would heal gradually if cared for well. The problem was Yuffie herself didn’t have the mental power. Materia was the crystallization of the Lifestream. To withdraw the power from the stabilized crystal, some form of shock is required and this is triggered by the mind waves of the user. As a result of that, the materia user’s mind is significantly weakened.

Limit Breaks

When your spirit energy rises to its ultimate limit, for a short while it aligns with and emits from your body. Furthermore, Zack is unusual in that he can copy Limit Breaks, such as taking Aerith’s “Healing Wind” Limit Break from FFVII and turning it into his Limit Break “Healing Wave”. In the same way, Cloud takes his Limit Break “Meteor Rain” from the original Limit Break Zack created based on him called “Meteor Shot”.

Final Heaven

Brandishing her right hand, she concentrates her fighting spirit into her clenched fist. With the fist that starts to emanate light depending on the amount of spirit energy gathered, she deals a massive blow to the monster! The spirit energy that is sent into the monster through her fist starts to destroy it from within, crushing it together with a big explosion.

After setting up the weapon to break the seal, she focuses her spirit. Before the eyes of the concentrating Yuffie, a large mass of spirit which glows violet, appears. After the spirit energy has formed up sufficiently, it is directed towards the enemy. The released spirit becomes an obi of light and shoots towards the enemy group, engulfing them.

Essentially?

The Soul = Will/Mind. Memories/Thoughts/Emotions are essentially the main power-sources in FFVII. The more heightened a characters emotions, the stronger that character will grow and perform.

Summons

Summoned Beasts

Beings which are called forth from summon materia, many of which outwardly resemble monsters. As seen in the original game of FFVII, many of the summon beasts draw their targets into their own unique space in order to attack. However, Advent Children’s Bahamut Tremor, was a special summon beast who attacked while interacting with the real world.

Crisis Core Complete Guide
"Zack Fair: What? Wait... That's a Bahamut Fury!!! You took that from me!? No-no-no! Trust me, you don't want that! Give it back!... Narration: The Materia was sent back to Zack several days later. Its value was most likely lost on Yuffie, being more than she could handle."
"Subdue these legendary creatures to claim their materia."

Ifrit

"A flame-wielding summon recreated in virtual reality. This entity is said to have given humans the gift of fire, and is widely known as the incarnation of creaion and destruction."
"This great horned beast is capable of untold devastation and can reduce anything in its path to a pile of smouldering ash."

Here, Ifrit's "Hellfire" as summoned by Zack Fair.

Combat Ability (Post Modeoheim)

vs Minerva

Here, the beginning. Here, the ending.

With her body clad in an impressive suit of golden armor, she is the existence that transcends all matter. Beneath her helmet, she is a beautiful woman with blond hair and green eyes. In Scene 10-06 Genesis fulfills his wish to meet her, and she appears in Mission No. 288 “The Reigning God.” She is interpreted to be the Goddess mentioned in LOVELESS, but in terms of substance she is similar to a summon, though it seems that the purpose behind her actions is to follow the intentions of the Lifestream.

...

In Scene 10-06 Minerva meets with Genesis in a place flooded with the Lifestream.

...

“Minerva is similar to a summon, and her intention was not necessarily to revive Genesis. The image of Minerva in her actions and expressions is a reflection of the will of the Lifestream.”

...

Genesis’ strong desire to ‘complete the duty of a SOLDIER’, was accepted by the Lifestream, in a way saying to him ‘Then complete it’.”

“Minerva’s facial expressions are meant to be hints to the Lifestream’s judgment, such as ‘Genesis has not yet completed his duty as a SOLDIER’ and ‘Genesis still has much left to learn’.”

Crisis Core Complete Guide p296

A large, mysterious cave discovered in the north. The ShinRa army, the Wutai army, and the Genesis army each pursued what lurked inside the interior of the cave, and when the Wutai and Genesis forces were annihilated, it left behind only the SOLDIERs of the ShinRa Army. Furthermore, within the cave lurked monsters and machines and other things of abnormal strength, and in the darkest depths of the cave is where Minerva reigned as the source of the energy within.Crisis Core Complete Guide p297

Worth noting is that the Emerald Weapon is present in the arena Minerva's fought within (here, upper right corner).

Relevance?

"The source of the problem was apparently more powerful than a summon. Its materia reaction was so beyond measure, the gauge started to smoke. In fact, the materia power was so intense that the other monsters, and even robots, became overloaded with mako and started going berserk."

The takeaway being that Minerva's energy is what's being measured and it also implicitly dwarfs the Emerald Weapon's.

Additional anecdotes?

vs Genesis Avatar

Here, the beginning. Here, the ending.

Here, Genesis Rhapsodos absorbs the "Red Globe".

A huge red globe held within the bows of a giant tree growing in the Banora underground were light breaks through the cave ceiling. Genesis unexpectedly found this type of materia, and during his “reproduction of LOVELESS” he established that it was “The Gift of the Goddess”. It’s environment is engulfed with the Lifestream, and the power it grants to Genesis can be seen, but the fine details of this process are unknown.

Crisis Core Complete Guide: The Red Globe p275

In Scene10-04 Genesis refers to the Divine Protection of the Planet, meaning the Planet’s Energy AKA the Lifestream. Genesis absorbed some Lifestream into his body, and in that way received the Divine Protection of the Planet, furthering his belief that he represents the hero of Loveless.

Crisis Core Complete Guide: The Divine Protection of the Planet p294

It is also worth considering the sheer size of the Red Globe compared to Huge Materia.

No Caption Provided

What has Huge Materia accomplished again?

"There are generations of knowledge and wisdom inside the Materia. We're going to borrow their powers and save the Planet from Sephiroth. There's no way we can lose the Huge Materia."

Here, Shinra plans to deal with Meteor by blasting it out of the sky by detonating it with Huge Materia (a single Huge Materia houses 330 times more energy than normal Materia). Here, when normal Materia gets near Huge Materia some kind of reaction should occur. Here, Materia as rare as Huge Materia is sure to have a special consciousness enclosed in it. Here, Summons as powerful as Bahamut Zero are born from the power of the Blue Huge Materia.

Here and here, we see the efforts of what 0 to 4 Huge Materia can accomplish against Meteor (it accomplished little towards their goal, albeit causing it significant damage to the Meteor's surface).

Here, the Mako Cannon in Junon powered by Huge Materia took the head off the Sapphire WEAPON.

On huge pillars, constructed almost overnight in Sector Eight, sat a dangerous looking weapon, a cannon hastily flown in from Junon. Scarlet, Head of the Department for weapons research, was responsible for overseeing the development of this super weapon, naming it “Sister Ray”, which seemed like a funny name, considering this weapon was their last defense against Sephiroth. Sister Ray was connected to all of the Mako reactors surrounding Midgar by a pipeline system, and the power was further amplified by means of a Huge Materia.

OTWTAS: Episode Shinra

Here, Rufus Shinra plans to destroy Sephiroth with the Sister Ray and moved it to Midgar to do so as it was useless in Junon without its Huge Materia. Here, the Sister Ray fires Mako powered shells.

Here, the Sistser Ray begins to charge itself to fire on the Diamond WEAPON and Sephiroth's barrier.

Now, let's compare its performance vs the pair, shall we?

Here, the Sister Ray punches through the Diamond WEAPON with little resistance or loss of momentum. It continues its flight towards its main target at the Northern Crater.

Here, Sephiroth's barrier manages to hold off the Sister Ray's firepower for several seconds before succumbing to the full impact. The Sister Ray's momentum is entirely depleted by the effort and travels no further.

G Copies

Copy Technology

Technology which, by transplanting the cells of a G-Type SOLDIER into a physically strong subject, copies the donor’s abilities, appearance, and characteristics onto the subject. However it does not always yield perfect results, and differences in appearance and ability may arise based on the subject’s latent potential. For example, the reason the Genesis and Angeal Copies in the game seem weaker than their originals is due to the subject’s latent potential being inferior to the originals, and are unable to fully utilise the abilities they received.

The influence of the copying process also extends to the subject’s mind, and if the subject’s will is weak their will is completely taken over by that of the cell donor and leads to the breakdown of their sense of self, like the SOLDIER operatives who become Genesis Copies. Conversely, if they are strong willed, they can maintain their identity while still being influenced by the will of the cell donor, such as Lazard as an Angeal Copy.

...

Genesis Copy

Subjects of the copy technique where Genesis’ cells were used. Though they are all humans their individual differences become more prominent during the process, as seen with the G-Assault and the G-Warrior, showing how an individual’s latent abilities can become integrated into the changes in form and strength that takes place during the copy process. The rate of their degradation also varies from individual to individual, along with influences from the state of Genesis’ cells, and thus his own degradation quickens the degradation of all Genesis Copies.

...

SOLDIER Degradation

A symptom of a particular flaw inherit within the G-Series SOLDIERs and their copies. It is due to an imperfect integration of Jenova cells into their bodies, and the symptoms worsen as their genetic information is spread to other beings. The first signs of degradation are changes in skin quality and hair color, and as the body’s natural immune system is damaged the subject’s skin and muscle tissue begin to degrade. Furthermore, the subject looses their ability to restrain themselves from giving in to brutal outbursts, which can temporarily raise their skills in combat, but they run the risk of eventually devolving into monsters.

...

Hollander’s Degradation

During the scenes in Gongaga Hollander’s degradation is revealed, because he used the same cells [from Gillian] he had originally transplanted into Genesis, and thus converted himself into a G-Series SOLDIER. The reason why his degradation is progressing at a remarkable rate and why his one wing is so small is because he does not have the same physical strength as Genesis.

Crisis Core Complete Guide

G-Type SOLDIER

Those created by Project G, and used to refers to Angeal and Genesis (in a broader sense, it also includes Hollander, who had applied the same treatment to himself during the game). The Copy ability they possess is the influence of Jenova’s own abilities to convert its target into a monster by implanting it with a virus it generates within its own body, and to mimic the form of people the target knows through reading their memories and emotions. However, as the Jenova cells are not fixed in their bodies, a G-Type SOLDIER will succumb to degradation symptoms as time passes.

vs Sephiroth

Q2-2: At what point in time was Project G deemed to be a failure?

A2-2: The verdict on the outcome of project had already been made when Angeal and Genesis were babies.

The Jenova Project was originally started with the aim of creating an Ancient. They didn’t get the data they had expected from Angeal and Genesis, and they were considered failures (although Hollander states in the game that Angeal was a success, at the time Project G was seen to be a complete failure). At the same time Project G was frozen, and abandoned.

On the other hand, Sephiroth showed the anticipated merit, and was deemed a success. Thanks to this Hojo seizes control of the science department, and Hollander loses his position within the department.

...

Q2-3: What are the crucial differences in the experimental processes for those born from Project S and those born from Project G?

A2-3: Put simply, it’s a difference between when the Jenova cells were injected into the body, and the concentration and purity of the Jenova cells.

Sephiroth was implanted with Jenova cells at the embryonic stage. Angeal was born from an ovum from Gillian, who has Jenova cells, and developed in her womb. Genesis was born from a fertilized egg cell unrelated to Jenova, and at the embryonic stage was implanted with genes from Gillian, who has Jenova cells.

In other words, because Sephiroth received Jenova cells with a high level of purity at an early stage of development, he ends up inheriting Jenova’s abilities the best.

...

Q7-1: In DC’s G Reports, it says that “G”, one of the ‘two taboos’, bears an epithet signifying ‘unique’. What does this mean?

A7-1:The ‘two taboos’ refers to Sephiroth and Genesis. In comparison to Sephiroth, the strongest and worst SOLDIER who tried to seize the life of the planet, Genesis was considered a unique SOLDIER who sealed himself away to protect the planet.

FFVII 10th Anniversary Ultimania: Sephiroth Profile p076-081

Those who are injected with Jenova cells, and are exposed to high concentrations of mako to be made into the ShinRa Company’s enhanced soldiers. They are armed with superhuman strength and endurance, and although they possess amazing reflexes, it is rare to find people with the strength to handle the operation needed for the adaption, and occasionally those subjects who fail during the research stage fall victim to reckless human experiments. SOLDIERs are ranked from 1st, to 2nd, to 3rd according to combat efficiency, and included within 1st is Sephiroth, the figure ranked highest of all.
