Pleasantly Surprised 1

I've never really viewed Supergirl as an "important" character before so I wasn't expecting much from her story, but I really enjoyed learning more about her background. There was quite a bit in here that I didn't know about her before. One thing I had mixed feeling about were the appearances of so many other superheroes and villains. On one hand it was great to see all those familiar faces, but at the same time none of them get to have much of a role in the story. I think it would have been bett...

Excellent Prelude 0

It seems I can't go anywhere these days without hearing the word "Deadpool". I wasn't really familiar with the character, but curiosity finally got to me and I decided to pick up a volume and see what all the fuss was about.Prelude to Deadpool Corps contains issues 1-5. Each one of the four first issues tells the stories of the different Deadpools (Lady Deadpool, Kidpool, Dogpool and Zombie Deadpool respectively) and then the fifth issue shows them working as a team for the first time.I have to ...

A Promising Start 3

I've just finished this volume of Witchblade and I'm a little surprised I've never read this series before, but I'm glad I discovered it.There's a lot to love about this book. First, it collects the first 8 issues making it a pretty large volume and it takes a while to read, so it's definitely worth the cost of the book. Also, I love the idea of the Witchblade and how it works, I've never read anything like it before and I'm looking forward to seeing how it's going to evolve in the series. Plus,...

Perfect for new readers 0

I think this first volume of Ultimate Spider-Man is a great starting point for new readers. I've been a long time fan of Spider-Man and I really enjoyed this reboot of the series. Ultimate Spider-Man brings us back to the beginning of Peter Parker's adventures - without having to go through decades of backstory - and it is adapted to modern times, which I thought was well done.  In my opinion, the only downside of this first volume is the slow pace at the beginning of the story. It takes a bit o...

Nearly Perfect 0

First, let me start off by saying that the first "crime" graphic novel I've read. It's not the type of story I'm usually interested in, but the premise of 100 Bullets gripped me and I decided that I had to check it out. Overall, I was really impressed. I think I'm already hooked on the series, I can't wait to pick up the next volume.   The greatest strength of 100 Bullets is in the storytelling. You get to witness unfortunate characters make difficult, life-changing moral decisions and th...

Addictive 0

I've never actually read any X-Men comics before and I had no idea where might be a good place to start, so I took a chance picking up the first volume of Astonishing X-Men. I figured I couldn't go wrong with this as I've been a long time fan of Joss Whedon and I have to say I wasn't disappointed.  I think the only problem I had with this book was that it didn't feel like the first volume of its own series. It throws you right into the middle of events without too much explanation about what's h...

A Visual Treat 0

This is the book that sparked my brand new love-affair with graphic novels. I have a hard time believing I've never read this before. I think it would be impossible for me to write a review about Arkham Asylum without mentioning the art of Dave McKean. I've always been a huge fan of McKean's work and of course this graphic novel is no exception. Every single panel from the first to the last page is breathtakingly illustrated and perfectly conveys the dark and twisted tone of the story. Everythin...

Mixed Feelings 0

Ok, so I'm still a newbie when it comes to comic books. Actually, I'd only read a handful of Spider-Man comics when I picked up this book and I wasn't really familiar with Venom's story and all that probably contributes quite a bit to my confused feelings towards this volume.  On one hand, I liked that it was a story from Venom's perspective about how he came to be and I also liked that it was a stand-alone volume (which means it was quick to read the whole thing). I was also really impressed wi...

Underrated Series? 0

I picked up Runaways after stumbling onto a review praising it as one of the most underrated comic series. I flipped through it quickly and didn't think it would appeal to me, but I decided to give it a shot anyway. After reading it myself, I'm wondering why it isn't recommended more often.  There's a lot of good stuff going on here. First, I loved the concept of a group of teens discovering that their parents are super-villains. Second, with such a large cast of characters, it would be easy to ...

Is It Just Me? 1

With all the praise this graphic novel receives, I'm sometimes ashamed to admit that I didn't really like it. This book was recommended to me (someone who has just jumped head first into the world of graphic novels) as the best place to start reading Batman. Honestly, I think everyone should stop and think before handing this over to brand new readers. I'm not saying it's terrible, it does a good job developing the characters and it's a fine origin story, but let's face it, it feels a bit dated,...
