Captain America Volume 9 (2018-2020) Review

No Caption Provided

Overview

So the run involves 30 issues ( + 2 annuals, which mostly felt like fillers), and it tells you 1 giant story.

The story start with fall from grace for Captain America and rise of a evil organisation, Power Elite, and 2 of their leaders: Alexa Lukin (sorcerer) and Red Skull.

They also have Selene, a heavy hitter who has taken on whole team of X-men, there for firepower too.

The story ends with the redemption of Captain America; death of Alexa and fall of Red Skull and Selene.

There is decent depth to the story; and for readability its broken down into 4 sub stories where the plot of the series moves forward, plus additional stories are added to the mix to make sure it doesnt feel slow or dull.

The stories are:

1) Winter in America (Issue 1 to 6)

2) Captain of Nothing (Issue 7 to 12)

3) The Legend of Steve (Issue 12 to 19)

4) All Die Young (Issue 20 to 30)

Lets look at them individually.

Story 1: Winter in America

In the previous run, Hydra conquered United States and their leader, Hydra Supreme pretended to be as well as looked like Captain America.

The real Captain America returned and Hydra were defeated.

But a new evil organisation has risen named Power Elite, headed by Alexa Lukin.

The story explores the theme of Captain America losing trust of his own people and the government.

The story explores what it means to be Captain America, if America no longer trust him?

The sitution gets even worse when Steve realises his girlfriend, Sharon, is working for the government under Thunderbolt Ross and keeping secrets from him.

The highlight of the chapter was battle with Taskmaster.

I would rate the story 3 out of 5

Story 2: Captain of Nothing

The first story ends with Thunderbolt Ross being presumed dead and Captain America being blamed for it.

He then turns himself in and is sent to Myrmidon, a prison for super-powered criminals run by Wolfgang Von Strucker.

The story details Captain America life in prision, and his eventual escape from it.

The highlight of the chapter was prision fight with Von Strucker.

I liked this story very much; and found the character interaction in the story both natural and unexpected.

I would rate this story 4 out of 5

Story 3: The Legend of Steve

So the mysterious Daughter of Liberty and their leader Dryad breaks Steve out of prision.

However things turn worse for Steve, as Power Elite starts throwing propoganda that Captain America and Hydra Supreme are one and the same.

This means no one trusts Captain America anymore, so this is now a story of self discover for Steve, on who he really is.

To make matter worse, Nick Fury decides to chase after Steve.

There are villians in the story too, which includes AIM ,Watchdog militia and Scourge.

There were couple of highlights in the story.

First Alexa vs Kingpin, and Alexa is so badass in the story, after all she is one of the prime antagonist of the whole season.

Another one was Steve vs US Agent. The fight showed both, US Agent's badassary (if that's even a word) and Steve's own guilt.

I thought that was beautiful.

Overall I would rate the story 4 out of 5

Story 4: All Die Young (Finale)

Steve discovers that the leader of Daughter of Liberty, called Dryad, was actually Peggy Carter.

Selene, a heavy hitter who is working on Alexa has stolen a bit of Sharon (Steve's Girlfriend) soul and they need to get it back before its too late.

So the first part of the Finale deals with Selene, and wow she is badass.

That being said the whole Selene vs Sharon in Iron Patriot Armor was pretty amazing, though the way it ended was a bit disappointing.

The introduction of Augusta Harkness was incredeble , though she sadly takes more of a backseat in the story, only acting as a mystic advisor than warrior.

That was a bit of a disappointment for me.

Then they have to deal with the 2 leaders: Alexa and Red Skull; and both of that was disappointing.

They set up the villians for almost 25 issues and failed to deliver, that was really disappointing to me.

Overall though, the story itself is quite decent, so I would give this 3 out of 5.

Conclusion

I thought the run was quite good, and I would recommend people give it a try.
