They're back: And so is Jeff Goldblum as the scientist in a team tasked with coming up with a way to defeat the invading aliens for a second time in Independence Day: Resurgence, which released the first trailer on Sunday.
His voice plays over scenes of mayhem and battle, saying: 'I spent 20 years trying to get us ready for this. We used their technology to strengthen our planet.'
And he adds, ominously: 'But it won’t be enough,' as scenes of Star Wars-style fighters streak across the screen.
They are accompanied by massive special effects showing huge explosions and the bodies of soldiers strewn across a battlefield.
Clouds of war: The gripping 141-second clip, which aired during Fox’s broadcast of the NFL’s Chicago Bears-Washington Redskins game, included massive CGI set pieces.
Space invaders: Jeff co-stars with actors new to the franchise including Liam Hemsworth.
The 141-second clip also features the voice of Bill Pullman, who played President Thomas J. Whitmore in the original, issuing his fresh rallying call, saying: 'Today you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression or persecution but from annihilation.
'And should we win the day, the Fourth of July 4 will no longer be known as an American holiday but as the day when the world declared in one voice we will not go quietly into the night, we will not vanish without a fight, we're going to live on, we're going to survive, today we celebrate...' before the voice is cut off by ominous radio static.
While Will Smith will not be returning for the sequel, many other stars from the original film will be back including Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner, aside from Jeff and Bill.
Femme fatale: Charlotte Gainsbourg joined the desperate team as Dr. Catherine Marceaux.
Having a blast: The sci-fi action sequel reunited director Roland Emmerich with many of his original cast from the 1996 blockbuster, which amassed a staggering $817.4 million worldwide box office haul.
Newbies include Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Independence Day: Resurgence is due for release on June 24 nearly 20 years to the day after the original film was released on July 3, 1996.
Getting ready for battle: Jessie Usher plays the son of the character created by Will Smith who opted not to return for the sequel.
