Reading Uncanny X-Men from the Beginning! - Thoughts and Opinions!

I'm reading Uncanny X-Men from the beginning right now and these are my thoughts on all the characters!
I've never read any of these before so it's all new to me seeing the characters like this. I've only ever read very few of the comics (about 5 fo' reals) and seen the cartoons (mainly X-Men Evolution which I looooooved) and the films.
There are a few things I know, like later characters who join (which I know from watching the movies and cartoons and from pictures on the internet and from artwork and stuff) but I know veeeeery little about story lines (oh gosh Jean dies about 10000 times).  There are characters I'm looking forward to seeing (Emma Frost you are so wonderful even though I have never read anything with you in HOW DO WE HAVE SUCH A CONNECTION?)
Next Issue - 21 (If I can find it anywhere)

List items

  • In my head I've always pictured him being a Dumbledore type figure but he seems very bland and mysterious. I like him but he's just very bossy, which I completely understand! But he just doesn't give a reason other then EVIL MUTANTS.

  • I loved Cyclops in the films, being played by James Marsden is never a bad thing ever. However, Cyclops seems a bit stuffy and not very nice, he's heroic which is always great but he could lighten up a bit. Obviously I am hopeful of some character development which is my favourite thing ever.

  • The characters repeatedly say Iceman is the youngest but I don't see it. He looks the same age as everyone else. I like Iceman, he's my favourite so far, single handedly fighting Magneto and not getting butt whooped like everyone else. Though he was the only one who knew it was Magneto.

  • Angel's powers are kinda useless considering Marvel Girl can fly now. What can he do? I like his story line though, his parents don't know about his powers. I guess he's the only X-Person whose parent's don't know Cyclops' parent's know cause it's obvious, Beast's have to know cause how could they not. Iceman and Marvel Girl haven't mentioned their folks. How can Angel's parent's not know? WINGS.

  • I wish he would communicate in english but I regard his wide vocabulary as a hilarious character trait. I knew he started of as a normal fellow from playing X-Men Legends but I'm wondering when he's gonna change!

  • She hasn't died yet. But I can wait! I like her, though I find the boys refering to her as "girl", "woman" and "vagina" very awkward. (I may have made that last one up) I'm shocked at the lack of telepathy, though I always found it useless in the cartoon cause she always got to worn out. MAN UP WOMAN!

  • I thought he could only control metal GUESS NOT! He can control magnetic.... plasma? I can't remember the exact wording. Energy? Anyway, I know he's the X-Mens main enemy and I'm expecting big things! I was shocked when the Stranger sent him to Mars and was confused about how he'd get back. I assumed he'd somehow magnet his way back. I was wrong.

  • Oh he's a bit of a freak. I do not appreciate his weird tattoos in that image <. I don't know anything about him other then what I've seen in his only appearence so far.

  • I couldn't stand him in either of the cartoons I've watched. What an idiot. He seems smarter in the comic, but not by much.

  • One of my favourite characters in X-Men Evolution. I love his dedication to his sister, even if it makes him act like an idiot sometimes. But why didn't he save her from those villagers? Why did Magneto need to do it?

  • She goes crazy later on right? I will wait for that patiently. I was wondering why her flashback seemed to be in medieval times and the actual comic takes place in the sixties. I am expecting time travel.

  • So different from the Movie and X-Men Evolution! He's obviously supposed to be some kinf of Jester to Magneto's King of Power! How will her get back from Mars :( I miss him.

  • His power is quite cool even if it's basically useless once you know about it. He looks like a detective which only makes me like him more!

  • So he's NOT Aquaman. Sorry, thats a mistake I will never make again. I know he's normally a Fantastic Four character or his own character and was basically a guest in the issue. Will he return and take Scarlet Witch as his mermaid bride?! I saw a spark there even though she nearly killed him!

  • The most uselessly usefull power ever, though what a weird name. I doubt he will return. Ever.

  • She hasn't done anything yet, but who knows what the future awaits! I love her name by the way.

  • He looks just like Magneto, though he has a BIG BAD history with Professor X. Just by looking at his comicvine picture I guess I won't be seeing much of him.

  • Thor has always struck me as being fairly boring. He didn't even have a cartoon on Fox Kids right? He just doesn't interest me. I didn't get why they got into a fight though. Any reason for a tumble I guess.

  • I AM IRRROOOON MAN I AM IRRRRROOOOON MAAAAAN. That is all I know about him. I haven't even see the movies.

  • Was he the first ever Marvel superhero? He just seems the type of character who would be first. I'm probably wrong. I find patriotism kind of cheesy. I know nothing of him. SORRY.

  • He's quite strong, how big can he grow? He can just step on you and it's over!

  • She can only shrink and fly? You are useless to any team except in VERY SPECIFIC adventures!

  • He was a bit shouty but he seems a decent guy. Though I did not appreciate him just telling them to leave after they helped him. Rudeness.

  • I desire a sabertooth tiger! There's not much to say except GIMME!

  • I can honestly say I did not expect him to go all constellational o.0 What can I say about him other then that?

  • I knew a lot about him from the original cartoon on Fix Kids, but that was a long time ago. I didn't really see the need for a two parter, they seemed to drag out the "Here he comes." part.

  • I have a soft spot for the Fantastic Four, though like X-Men I've never read an issue. The Human Torch's appearence seemed tacked on and mainly just because they wanted an appearence from him.

  • What an idiot. I guess his heroic sacrifice was kinda nice.

  • There not very scary but I guess if your just a nice every day mutant walking down the street and one appears your gonna be a bit worried. Maybe it's the colour scheme but I don't get it. I hated them in Legends though, I never beat the level in the city.

  • Poor Beast :( What a jerk. I hate this guy. I know he's gonna return, don't know when, don't know how but it's obvious!

  • This guys power is quite cool, I never really got why he was evil though? Excuse plot? But he's gone now so I'm over it.

  • A girl friend for Beast! I expect SHOCK when he turns blue! Which is soon maybe?

Nice comments on the characters. I would suggest searching the "marvel chronology project" for subsequent appearances for the various characters. Now for some specific questions:

1)   Beast. "I knew he started of as a normal fellow from plating X-Men Legends but I'm wondering when he's gonna change!"

Not for quite a while. He tested out an experimental serum on himself in "Amazing Adventures" #11 (March, 1972). That was the beginning of his own series as the headliner of that title

2) jean Grey. " I'm shocked at the lack of telepathy"

You are going through Stan Lee issues. Roy Thomas upgraded the character by adding telepathy to her powers. You will have to wait until "X-Men" vol. 1 #42 (March, 1968).

3) Magneto. " I was shocked when the Stranger sent him to Mars and was confused about how he'd get back."

You have already gone through most of his early appearances. You will have to wait until "Avengers" vol. 1 #47-49 (December, 1967 - February, 1968) for his return.

4) Scarlet Witch.  " I was wondering why her flashback seemed to be in medieval times and the actual comic takes place in the sixties."

For some reason, early Marvel tales tend to feature Europe as a backwards place where people dress and act as if the 19th century is still ongoing. Poor research instead of time-traveling.

5) Toad.  " How will her get back from Mars "

He returns alongside Magneto in "Avengers" vol. 1 #47-49 (December, 1967 - February, 1968).

6) Unus. " I doubt he will return. Ever."

Sorry to disappoint you. He returns in "X-Men" vol. 1 #37-39 (October-December, 1967).

7) Captain America. " Was he the first ever Marvel superhero? "

Not really. That title is disputed between Namor and Human Torch/Jim Hammond who both first appeared in "Marvel Comics" #1 (October, 1939). Namor has a slight edge, having previously appeared in a one-shot publication by another publisher: "Motion Pictures Funnies Weekly" #1 (April, 1939).

Captain America is a relatively late addition. He first appeared in "Captain America Comics" #1 (March, 1941).

@byzantine: I've seen the Chronology project before, it's incredibly thorough. I was gonna read it from the earliest chronological appearence of an X-Men member but I just decided to start from the team's first appearence.

Thank you for answering my questions!

1) I like Beast so I'm looking forward to anything happening to him, I'm hoping for lots of turning-blue-and-hairy-drama.

2) I'm looking forward to the explaination of how Jean get's the new powers. Though her having telepathy will make Professor X redundant!

3) Not much to say on that...

4) That's quite dissapointing. I like time travel.

5) Good! I like Toad, I'd rather he came back than Magneto!

6) I don't see the point of Unus, didn't he learn his lesson after his first fight with the X-Men?

7) I assumed I was wrong, but he just seems like the type of guy who would be first.

Now to read #21, once pay day arrives and I can order it.
