Spalding Presents Street Ball (Comic Ads #1)
Comic Ads are more than just the mountain of Hostess Ads we know and love. Over the years, many a company has used one page comic ads to shill their products in the pages of comic books! So I thought I'd do a list series that showcases those ads, and shows you what issues I've found them in. To me, these are as much a part of comics history as any superhero, and I love 'em for the nostalgia they bring. I hope they do the same for you. Enjoy. |
First up, I really wanted to do a Charles Atlas ad, but I couldn't find any right off (we'll get to that though). So instead, how about one of the most prevalent ads ever. This Spalding ad decorated the back covers of so many comics, it's ridiculous. Featuring comic versions of basketball players Dr. J and Rick Barry, they show some neighborhood kids the value of playing basketball with a Spalding autographed rubber basketball.
I have to point out a sign of the times in this ad, that Rick Barry was given top billing over Dr. J. Don't get me wrong, Rick Barry is known as one of the greatest small forwards ever, but Dr. J is way more famous. Whatever the case, this ad was used for years, and is one of the tops for bringing a nostalgic smile to my face, whenever I see it.
