Margie gets FRee GIFTS for the whole family (Comic Ads #52)

No Caption Provided
Comic Ads are more than just the mountain of Hostess Ads we know and love. Over the years, many a company has used one page comic ads to shill their products in the pages of comic books! So I thought I'd do a list series that showcases those ads, and shows you what issues I've found them in. To me, these are as much a part of comics history as any superhero, and I love 'em for the nostalgia they bring. I hope they do the same for you. Enjoy.

I've been wanting to get to this one for awhile, but I have been putting it off, because I was having difficulty finding a good scan. Finally found this in The Inspector #3, and before you ask, it's not part of the Kenner Fun Catalog. That comic was just full of great stuff!

There's some fun stuff in this ad. Margie sends away for The Consumer Gazette, a catalog with a cornucopia of free samples (hence the image in the middle panel) despite her brother's skepticism. And who is that brother, dear reader? None other than Billy! That's right, a bit after his vacation gift from dad, but long before he told off his boss, Billy was doing the duty of any red blooded American teenager, and harassing his sister!

Scooby Doo! Where are you?
Scooby Doo! Where are you?

Margie persevered though, and walked her short little skirt down to the mailbox for an armful of free stuff! The postman declares she is "suddenly getting more mail than anyone else in the neighborhood." Y'know why? Because The Consumer Gazette has sold her name and address to anyone who would buy, so now Margie's on everyone's mailing list!

It's them, I tell ya! ...Well, sort of.
It's them, I tell ya! ...Well, sort of.

In the end, she not only impressed Billy, but a gang of friends that look suspiciously like a mix-and-matched Scooby Doo Gang! (Come on, I'm seeing Fred, Daphne, and a gender-bent Velma and Shaggy. Aren't you?)
