Iron Man in Rust Be My Destiny! (Hostess Ads #116)

No Caption Provided
On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Archie and Harvey characters!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982.

So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This time it's: Iron Man in Rust Be My Destiny! As noted on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page:

Seeking the Hostess Cupcakes in the break room at Stark Industries, the hydro-manipulating Waterman was out to drown every employee standing in his way. Attempting to rust Iron Man proved to be faulty, as a repulsor blast turned the villain into steam.

Hydro-Man
Hydro-Man

Waterman appeared in this ad in July, 1977, predating the first appearance of Marvel's Hydro-Man by three years, seven months. Hydro-Man first appeared in January 1981's Amazing Spider-Man #212.

I've always thought of Hydro-Man and Sandman as pretty much the same villains, with slightly different powers. They're actually vastly different, but sand or water, they're typically drawn with the same effects- lower body is a tower of water/sand, arms and fists are huge and watery/sandy. Whether you like Hydro-Man or Sandman more, you have to admit that the name "Hydro-Man" gets way more miles per gallon than "Waterman!"
