Captain Tootsie is the spokes-toon for Tootsie Rolls, having appeared in numerous ads from 1943 to approximately 1955. He also appeared in newspapers, and possibly magazines, in addition to comics. I've run across one set of daily ads so far, along with Sunday strips, and a two-issue comic book called The Adventures of Captain Tootsie and the Secret Legion. Just enjoy the ads. Unless there's something significant to point out, I'm not going to say a lot about them.

First, there are two different versions of this ad. In one "Robbery" in the title logo is in dark yellow, and in the other it is red. The red logo version is also missing the final Tootsie Roll push at the end, but I'm assuming that's because whoever originally scanned that cut it off. If I find a better version, I'll replace it.

You might notice that the robber is holding something in his hand when he squares off against Captain Tootsie. That's a blackjack, also known as a slapjack, and it's just what that makes it sound like- a device for slapping someone. It's basically a leather precursor to today's telescoping batons. In the time of this comic, they were even issued to police. I found three pictures of a police issue blackjack on ebay:

As I said, today they have telescoping batons, also known as expandable batons, or asps. I wasn't sure if this was a legal weapon for a citizen, so I asked a local officer once. He said they're not illegal, but if someone pulled one on him, he'd have to assume they know how to use it, and the use of deadly force may be justified. First of all, never pull any weapon on an officer. Second, the whole purpose of a blackjack or a baton is to be a non-lethal alternative- meant to make the person you're striking with it quit or give up. Here's a video on today's batons:
