Captain Tootsie at the Snow Carnival (Captain Tootsie #19)
Captain Tootsie is the spokes-toon for Tootsie Rolls, having appeared in numerous ads from 1943 to approximately 1955. He also appeared in newspapers, and possibly magazines, in addition to comics. I've run across one set of daily ads so far, along with Sunday strips, and a two-issue comic book called The Adventures of Captain Tootsie and the Secret Legion. Just enjoy the ads. Unless there's something significant to point out, I'm not going to say a lot about them. |
This ad, Captain Tootsie and friends are at the Yartmouth College snow sculpture contest. I'd never heard of Dartmouth College having a snow sculpture contest, but I figured that had to be the place to look. Sure enough, Dartmouth College has an annual Winter Carnival snow sculpture contest, and we're not talking about tiny busts on a pedestal. We are talking about monstrously huge sculptures that people can stand on or walk through when completed. That's pretty freakin' amazing.
These aren't just people going out and rolling up some snow, and seeing what they can come up with either. These take planning. Students might even make a clay model of what they want the snow sculpture to look like.
Unfortunately, while looking into this, I also found some articles that suggest the Winter Carnival is fading into the past. Seems a shame. Apparently, it's been a long held Dartmouth tradition.
