Beep Beep The Road Runner "Helter Skelter" (Hostess Ads #57)

No Caption Provided
On a site dedicated to making a wiki history of all things comics, comics ads should not be forgotten. Especially the ads for Hostess Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other snacks. Starting in 1975, Marvel and DC heroes (and the Harvey characters!) spent seven years throwing Hostess snacks at a bizarre line of villains to stop their crimes. Although many of the villains were completely silly, they were created specifically for these ads, and in many cases, not even the names have been used again, since the ads stopped in mid-1982.

So I thought I'd show an ad here, and make a list of the comics I find it in, as I run across them. This list features: Beep Beep The Road Runner "Helter Skelter." There are no notes on the Hostess Superhero Advertisements page, because I only just added the image to the page.

Wile E. Coyote tries to stop the Roadrunners in their tracks with a wall of water, but Daffy Duck distracts him with Twinkies. The Roadrunners escape down the road at full speed.

I'm thinking Daffy didn't think this through. After all, a bird's a bird to a coyote, right? Today's updated menu: duck!

@liberty: Oh no! They talked all the time (and in rhyme) in the comics. "Beep beep" as their only word balloons would run thin after awhile. I didn't think it was worth mentioning in the list text, but the rhyme was off in this ad, and Wile E. Coyote finished part of it- that never happened in the comics that I read. Talk about breaking continuity! ;)

@cbishop: Roadrunners aren't suppose to talk either. They are totally breaking continuity for me. =)

@liberty: Isn't it cool? People forget that the Harvey and Gold Key/Whitman characters did some of these ads as well. :)
