06/13/191963(Blog) (Forum)1963.WUBI #107.

We all have trade paperback (TPB) collections we'd like to see. Here's one of mine:

Proposed Title:1963
Collecting 6 Issues:
  • 1963 #1-6.
TPXtras:
  • A Touch of Silver #5.
  • Shadowhawk #14.
  • missing annual.
Covers: (click to enlarge)
TPB Cover: Shadowhawk #14
TPB Cover: Shadowhawk #14

If you didn't get to read 1963 back in 1993, when Image was still young, then buddy, you missed out! This series is a bittersweet memory for me. Sweet, because it was great fun. I kind of viewed it as an extra dose of Big Bang Comics which was coming out at the same time, although the two were unrelated beyond a one-issue crossover. Bitter... no, really just sad... because there was supposed to be an annual, but it never happened.

But the FUN! Oh my gosh, the fun! 1963 was a Marvel parody/tribute that gave us some pastiches of the Fantastic Four (Mystery Incorporated), Spider-Man/Daredevil (The Fury), Captain America (U.S.A.), Doctor Strange (Johnny Beyond), Thor (Horus [okay, less pastiche, and more subbing one myth for another]), and the Avengers (Tomorrow Syndicate).

Silver Age chills, I tell ya!

Maybe you're thinking, "Why not just read the originals?"

The fun of a pastiche is catching the references, and imagining what the originals would have been like if the pastiche had been the original. I mean, I defy anyone to read Mystery Incorporated's Planet yelling, "There's a Planet coming through!" without hearing it in their mind (or saying it aloud) in the same style of The Thing yelling, "It's clobberin' time!" I always imagined it with a bit of a reverberating echo. And there's the little thrill that I still get when I see the bold logo in the word balloon as The Fury declares, "No One Escapes The Fury!" I get a little Silver Age chill up-and-down my spine when I read that, and I wish that there was a series to enjoy for that character. There's simply too much fun to be had in these pages, and it deserves a trade paperback!

For the cover, I assume Image would just go with the cover of 1963 #1. If they included the two issues I mention in the TPXtras sections though, then I'd want them to go with Shadowhawk #14. It features the Tomorrow Syndicate on the cover, can easily be adjusted to put "1963" on the cover instead of "Shadowhawk," and it's a recognizable cover homage of Avengers #1. Cover homages never seem to hurt book sales.

For this TPB to be complete, I think you have to include A Touch of Silver#5, where the 1963 characters meet Big Bang Comics' Round Table of America!

A Touch of Silver #5's story was reprinted in Big Bang Comics #35, and I think you have to include that beautiful cover.

Shadowhawk#14 tells the story of 'Hawk going back to 1963, meeting the heroes, and trying to stop the AIDS virus from happening. It's more 1963 goodness, and simply must be included.

In a perfect world, a 1963 TPB would include the long-lamented missing annual. It's been pretty well established that this will never happen, but we can dream. I won't go into the details, because you can read about them on Wikipedia, Mega Comics Group, Comicsbeat, and many others. My fan heart aches that we'll never get to read the annual though.
